Matt

That narrows it down. At Fever Ray, I was sitting with at least 4 different Matts.

Two board girls that were with John on the first day. One was Hanna, couldn't remember the name of the other one.

Probably Corinna.

I want to say that camping with Mark, John, Hannah, Corinna, Henry, Joe, Rik and Erik (and everyone who stopped by our place) really helped make the festival for myself and my wife. Without that it would not have been as fun as it was. Thanks from Paul and Kim.

It was a great pleasure being able to compare your real campsite to the Google Sketchup Version in such great detail. You were a lot of fun as neighbors and hanging out in the festival and you brought way more chairs than people, which is always a plus.

Coachella was great! so many memories i dont think i could capture it all in a review. Highlights were Proxy and Pretty lights were my fav.... Phoenix, Craze n Klever, orbital, passion pit.

Low lights... LCD was a little dissapointing, Z-trip was good but i was expecting greatness. Gorillaz was a dud.

Met so many cool people. Camped with some people from canada and some cool Aussies. just an amazing weekend all around. loved it! (and got VIP for free , cant complain there =)

lcd was a little disappointing. their new stuff isn't anywhere near as good as their old stuff. and no north american scum or daft punk.... :(

but they started and ended their set with some good stuff. time to get away into us and them was awesome. then the one two punch of yeah and ny i love you to end it was sweet.

the gorillaz music left me with goosebumps the whole entire set. but i was very disappointed by the stage show. something tells me that some of their visuals didn't work out in time for the show, so they went with a stage show rather than animated visuals.

proxy and orbital were highlights in the sahara for me. that was pretty awesome along with Phoenix and MGMT on outdoor. i thought those sets were pretty damn good too.

This was not my favorite Coachella by any stretch but it was still a fantastic weekend. It was fun partying in the campgrounds afterwards on Friday night with Gaslamp Killer, Daedelus and Maryanne Hobbs playing the Pure Filth area. Ins & Outs ruled, especially when you're parked in the disabled lot between the Gobi and Mojave tents and your car has two fully loaded coolers of booze.

In true lurker fashion, I saw a few of you guys but was too shy, tired or fucked up to say hi.

When I went over to the Gobi at 7pm on Sunday to see Sly, I saw Tom walk by, so I followed him into the tent and he was with John and Marc. All four of us were together when they announced that Sly wasn't going on and that Little Boots would be on later. I think we all had a feeling Sly wouldn't show (even though he appeared later in the Mojave) but it was too funny with the four of standing there and hearing the news of his original set time being cancelled. Classic moment.

I read this... I like this....

"Coachella is a pilgrimage or religious proportions full of trials to prove your faith. What drives us through the three-hour parking process, the blistering hear, the multitude of churro carts that make it even harder to walk around is that one moment. That brief instant when a breeze sweeps by at the same moment that you're favorite guitarist hits that high point in that guitar solo that you've sung along to millions of times alone in your car. That moment when you claim a little bit of Coachella for yourself."

Looks like Gov. Brewer will sign "The Bill" today. What a sad day for Arizona, and for the country. Only positive I can see is that all the Latino population here in the State (that used to be mostly Republican/Right mind you) will now be rising up at the polls. The vast majority ARE here legally, and will most certainly vote Brewer out and a few GOPers from the Legislature. My hope is that Goddard gets in, and maybe can clean up the mess.

If the Democratic party is smart, they will start a large campaign to get everyone registered to vote.

WTF is up with our state?! Can it get more crazy?

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0410/36594.html

The Arizona state Senate on Thursday passed a bill making it illegal for a person to “intentionally or knowingly creating a human-animal hybrid.”

The bill, which passed 16 to 12, would prohibit anyone in the state from “creating or attempting to create an in vitro human embryo by any means other than fertilization of a human egg by a human sperm.”

The measure would also outlaw “transferring or attempting to transfer a human embryo into a nonhuman womb,” “transferring or attempting to transfer a nonhuman embryo into a human womb” and “transporting or receiving for any purpose a human-animal hybrid.”

Louisiana passed a similar law in 2009, the same year Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) introduced the Human-Animal Hybrid Prohibition Act of 2009. The Senate did not take up Brownback proposed law.

A state House panel has also passed the bill, though it has not faced a full vote. GOP Gov. Jan Brewer has not spoken about the bill.

The bill is designed to block potential embryonic research which combines any human and animal cells as well as the “fertilizing a human egg with a nonhuman sperm or a nonhuman egg with human sperm.”

The bill would make it a class 6 felony in the state to knowingly create such a hybrid during research and class 1 misdemeanor to create or a purchase a human-animal embryo otherwise.

yay! i'm glad we finally got a venue. i saw that date on her tour website and the lack of the phoenix lilith fair tour date and assumed she wouldn't be on the lilith fair in phoenix.

i also hope marquee means less expensive tickets. i wanted to go to that celebrity theatre show, but it was too pricey.

and i'd much rather see badu than EDC this year, the line-up is one of the worst i've see in almost a decade. if EDC would bring some NEW talent instead of the same acts over and over again, i might have made hte trip without randy.

Fucking horrifying:

PHOENIX Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is expected to announce Monday if he'll run for Arizona governor.

Several sources confirm to the ABC15 Investigators that Arpaio has already made a decision, and will likely run for the office.

In a news conference after this story was first published, the Sheriff said he was still weighing his options, but also that he would in fact have an announcement on Monday.

However, when asked about a state sales tax during the news conference, the Sheriff either misspoke or leaked his decision.

"When I'm the governor, I'll study the issue," he said. "If become the governor..so I become the governor...I'll study it."

Republican Party Chairman Randy Pullen said he has spoken with the Sheriff on several occasions about running for governor.

As recently as last week, Pullen said the Sheriff told him by phone that "he was just letting me know he was seriously considering it and he was meeting with his advisors and supporters to make a final decision, and that decision would be in very early May."

Several high ranking sources within the Sheriff's Department tell the ABC15 Investigators that all the necessary paperwork "has been filled out and is ready to file."

Those same sources say Arpaio has been meeting with Republican power players for the last two weeks, and that several of the conversations focused on Arpaio running for governor.

In a press release from Arpaio's campaign dated March 22, 2010, Chad Willems with Summit Consulting Group said "in just 12 months, Arpaio has raised $2 million from supporters in Arizona and around the country."

According to Arpaio's public campaign reports, he currently has at least $1.2 million in his political war chest.

"Just when we think it's going to slow down, the contributions keep pouring in," Willems said.

The question of Arpaio's candidacy is getting an awful lot of buzz across the state these days.

If the Sheriff is going to run, he has to announce soon so he can start collecting the necessary signatures to file for the primary election. That filing deadline is May 26th.

He'll also have to resign as Maricopa County Sheriff.

In addition to buzz from within the official channels, there are also a lot of back channel hints that Arpaio is seriously considering a run for the office.

In early April, he told several media outlets his wife was encouraging him to run.

He also posted on his Twitter account, "Now my wife of 53 years has joined in to urge me to run for AZ Governor. I have a big decision to make."

The 77-year-old later told the Arizona Republic the only reason he wouldn't run for governor was that he'd be forced to resign as sheriff.

In mid April, Arpaio again used his Twitter account to create more speculation.

He wrote, "The time is coming to meet with my senior commanders to discuss the future."

A second post seemed to allude that Arpaio's time as Sheriff was about to become part of the past. It read, "the employees at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office are outstanding and I have been lucky to be their sheriff."

If Arpaio does run for Governor, he'll be facing a long list of declared opponents, including Governor Jan Brewer, State Treasurer Dean Martin, businessman Buzz Mills and Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard.

per azcentral.com:

If Arpaio decides to run for governor, Arizona law would require him to resign immediately because he isn't in the final year of his current term as sheriff.

I have like 1/2 my extended family hidden on Facebook because of their support of 1070 so that I can't see any of their stupid comments. One of my cousin's dropped me as a friend because I said another cousin looks like he could be an illegal alien and better have his proper documentation on him at all times.

I think there are a lot of people who support SB1070 but also like legal Mexicans. In fact I know of many legal mexicans who dislike illegal mexicans for cheating a system they had to go through. There are so many different sides and allegiences to this issue. As much as i'm against this bill and see the potential dangers of it, i'm no longer outraged at those who think otherwise.

The one stat that does seem to poke holes in many of their arguments is the recent report that illegal immigration increased in Arizona while violent crimes went down 35%. Most of those I discuss this topic with are always posting the gory details of the drug and gang violence. Another important difference that gets lost in this debate is the difference between those involved in the drug and gang violence and those who come here and lay low so they can stay here.

i removed a friend on facebook for deleting a very long, rational comment i made on one of his pro 1070 news article posts. he had also made his avatar into the confederate flag meshed with the arizona flag. i hate when people think that posting news articles without any sort of discussion makes you politically savvy or something.

also, i will probably be at first fridays after the symphony. hella drunk. free drinks friday before the symphony as thanks for a project i've been working on, woo-hoo!!!!!!!

Supposedly Phoenix is the kidnapping capitol of the US. You hear it from all different sources. I am a Phoenix native and have many acquaintances here in the Phoenix-area. In my 32 years of life I personally do not know anyone that has been kidnapped or has been the victim of an attempted kidnapping. Not to say that it doesn't happen, but I think this is fear mongering. Can anyone help me refute this statement? I'm sick of people using this as one of the justifications for passing 1070, and I personally think the whole kidnapping issue is bogus.

I can't. Phoenix is actually the number two city in the world for kidnapping just behind Mexico City. I think it's an actual fact that you will have a hard time refuting. You probably haven't seen it because you are white and probably don't hang out with many drugs smugglers or mexican gangs. I haven't seen it either but I don't doubt the stats.

I mean, if they are counting the drop houses where the coyotes are keeping their clients until payment is completed that's one thing. But I think people are getting this image of little kids getting swiped off every street corner and that's just not the case.

...haha, one of the last paragraphs in the article posted above talks about a 14 year old girl getting snatched off the corner, zing!

faxman75

The article does point out that it's mostly illegal on illegal kidnappings but it does spill over as the example at the end of it points out. The fact of the matter is as long as there are dangerous terrorists (that's what I think these monsters are at least) in our state illegally and so many we can't even get a handle on them, it's going to be hard to shoot down any laws the state makes about legals. Most people don't know the difference between the gang/drug smuggler/kidnapper/cop shooting torturers and the guys standing outside of Home Depot or working construction to keep a familiy together. I have had many a dinner with illegal immigrants who had a regular middle class house, spoke a little english and were the furthest thing from criminals. Connor had a best friend whose parents were hear illegally. The problem is they all get lumped together and the whole word "illegal" is what will keep it that way.

Even John McCain didn't differentiate when he made his most recent flip flop and decided to support this state law. He said this law was a necessity because of the violence at the border and through the corridors. This law doesn't do anything to have effect on that violence but our media is doing a poor job of explaining it well and our politicians are being liars and deceptive as usual.

sin213

this happens in every large city in america....we just happen to be "new/up and coming" news and we share a border with Mexico which highlights the issue.

faxman75

You can always battle back with the fact that Arizona isn't even in the top 5 states with the largest illegal population in the country. We are all the way down at number 8 so couple that with the fact that violent crimes have gone down while the illegal population has increased and you have a solid starting point to dispute the argument that illegals = increase in violent crime.

The 1% increase does benefit schools. Here's a nice article from a paper I never heard of but it's pretty well written and easy to understand. It seems even if Prop 100 passes next year our schools are going to have to make huge budget cuts anyway. Sad.

Funny, but I have had the same thoughts. It would be very difficult to do, but if things don't start turning around...I may have to.

My optimism says that maybe the immigration backlash is the kick in the ass this state needed. The next elections will be VERY important, to say the least.

i've had thoughts of leaving on the brain for awhile. i just get frustrated to think about starting over at a new company. i've been here eight freaking years. i'm finally getting to do actual, documented project management work which will help me get my PMP someday. they finally offer a degree with a project management concentration right as i'm entering my upper level classes. i finally have a manager i get along with. it just sucks thinking that i have to leave all that behind if i ever want to move. it also sucks because i really love it here :(

but i am ecstatic about the cameras. it doesn't make sense with our economy, but i'll take it!

and here's the view from my walk yesterday:

that's south mountain to the right. i live in the foothills and there's a desert area just outside my complex where i go walking every day :) last night was kinda tricky though as there was a guy riding a dirt bike. i constantly fear that i'll be jamming out to my ipod too loudly and get run over by the dirt bikers.

The pointed counter I've heard to this is that since the kids are so important their funding should've been in the budget already. If our legislators really wanted to give us a reasonable choice towards fiscal responsibility they would've had something more discretionary depend on voters approving the sales tax increase.

I'm going to vote yes for the funding but I do feel a little cheated & wish I could vote no to help end these tactics.
