I'm somewhat new to Phoenix and was wondering if the Rhythm Room is an alright venue. It's my berfday tomorrow and I was thinkin' about checkin out RJD2 there. Does it get pretty crowded, drinks spendy?
Or is there anything else happening on Easter Sunday?

M Sparks
04-03-2010, 11:19 PM
Rhythm Room is kind of a dive bar...I've never been there for a "real show" though. I shot some stuff for a blues documentary or something. Mt Mcabe and Aligator Boogaloo are your Rhythm Room experts, they'll chime in here at some point.

mountmccabe

Haha, I'd consider Rhythm Room one of the least dive-y venues in Phoenix. The crowd depends on who's playing; the place holds 350 and St Vincent will sold it out but many shows do not (sorry, can't think of any recent examples.) The drinks are quite typical for Phoenix, maybe a little on the cheaper side.

I'd probably call it my favorite venue in Phoenix but that depends on what you're lookin' for.

RR has a dive-y feel (I think it's by design) but definitely not a dive-y crowd. I would call the drinks cheaper than most. Best venue in the area since Nita's closed years ago.

Haha, I'd consider Rhythm Room one of the least dive-y venues in Phoenix.

Well, it's not The Clubhouse, but it's also not going to be confused for some snooty Scottsdale club.

But I haven't been there in 5 years, and it was just some shitty local blues band with about 10 people in the crowd, so my viewpoint was very different.

I've been to some awesome shows at the Rhythm Room lately, as well as some not so great. The sound can be on point or way off. And the drinks are on par to less expensive than other venues. $1.50 PBRs and Schlitz can't be beat at a show.

I purchased some of this herbal insence stuff yesterday at the head shop next door to Yucca. They had tons of varieties. The one I heard about on the news is called K2 but I went with something called Mojo. It's basically a bunch of herbs and it smells and tastes nothing like pot. It was $40 for 3 grams and honestly I don't have anything great to report. I only smoked a bong full and it was alright but you should all know it doesn't even come close to the power of the Deezy. I sprinkled some in with some deezy before bed and that was kind of interesting. I think I woke up really fucked up in the middle of the night. For those of you who like Salvia they also sell that stuff at the head shop next to yucca. I'm undecided on whether or not i'll try other brands of this herbal synthetic pot or incense or whatever the fuck they call it but so far I wouldn't recommend it for anything more than a mixer.
I also thought it was interesting that the packaging read "not for sale in the USA". Upon further internet research many of the sites have warning that read "not for human consumption" as well. The reviews on this stuff are far and few between and the guy who runs the head shop said he sells quite a bit of it. A news report I saw included frustrated cops who don't have a field test kit for it and don't see it as possible since each brand changes up the herbs and none of them contain actual thc.

I was going to go to Aura Saturday, because Tree is into Bellydance and Poi and stuff like that. But it turns out she's not going to be here. So now I'm trying to decide between Aura and Obscura. I still have an invite out to a friend for Aura...if she bails, I'll probably go to Obscura.

I made it to the Rhythm Room on Sunday for Happy Chichester/Busdriver/RJD2. Overall a great show, but between this one and St. Vincent, their sound is below par for me. On Sunday, Busdriver's mic kept on cutting in and out, he would have to hold it then would get into the rap, take his hand off, then it would cut out again - took them a while to replace it too.

Happy Chichester being the opener was ok, full of energy but seems like he is the jack of many instruments but master of none. His vocals were also painful at times with held notes. Again for an opener, he was entertaining but I did not like seeing that he was also in the RJD2 band on keys and also disappointingly on backup vocals.

RJD2s set started off with RJ coming out in a rhinestone studded jumpsuit, a welders mask talking through a Donnie Darko rabbit type voice, and a korg padkontrol attached to his groin which was also free to spin around. He did some short sample jams on that padkontrol and then jumped right into a 3 turntable/mpc set. I loved the balance between his newer 2 albums and the older stuff we love (Deadringer, Since We Last Spoke, etc). The dj set lasted for about 25 minutes, then the band joined him and they jumped into third hand material and eventually some Colossus. It also took the staff a while and multiple mic changes to finally get RJ's VOX amp hooked up while they were playing. Towards the end of the show, RJ threw back on the studded jumpsuit and mask with the padKontrol and jumped in the front of the crowd while playing samples along with the current track, can't remember off hand what the track was though.

I took a couple of videos with my Flip MinoHD and also recorded Busdriver's full set and RJD2's full set if anyone's interested. I might need to eq it a bit to add back in some bass, but overall it turned out quite well for being front and center.

Anyone else make it out to the show?

I love it, I ride my bike down the road, pop my headphones in, look up stuff on my iPhone and generally zone out for the 30 minute ride to work. I get to keep my car garaged all day, buy gas like once a month, and help reduce air pollution. It can't be beat. The Route starts in Chandler and heads west through South Tempe, around the Warner-Elliot loop, then jumps on I-10 to downtown.

Due to funding cuts, Chandler has proposed getting rid of their portion of the route. I went to a City of Phoenix Transit Dept Community Outreach Meeting earlier in the week where Transit staff were on hand to summarize the cuts and answer any questions. The City of Phoenix has proposed to keep their portion of the route, but nothing is set in stone. The Transit staff at the meeting said to make sure colleagues, friends, family, whoever should go online and take the City of Phoenix transit survey and make sure to reference keeping the 540 in the comments section (1c) because the Phoenix City Council is going to analyze the results to determine where to make the cuts. So if you have some time, please take the brief survey, link below, and ask to keep the 540. Thanks!

http://www.phoenix.gov/publictransit/svtransit.html

...and the survey is open to everyone, not just City of Phoenix residents.

Bad Brains was crazy last night. I don't know what my opinion is. Stage diving, mosh pits, and almost collapsing barracades go along with punk rock, but when you're on the rail it can be kind of scary. Luckily Micah and I were on the side rail so were weren't in the depths of the craziness.

Well, shit. Just found out the house we were going to shoot in on the 24th is out. Audra, can you talk to your sister? Maybe John can vouch for how reasonable our little crew is. (Do it, John.)

Speaking of John, I've got 21 downloads on eMusic right now. Which acts/songs in the early parts of Friday & Sunday would you recommend I download to give myself something to look forward to before nightfall? I guess the question can be posed to other folks in this here thread as well. Who are you passionate about among the lower-tier acts? (And yes, I'm sure there are plenty of other threads in which recommendations are made, but I don't know or trust the taste of the vast majority of the board so I figured I'd just cut to the chase with people I've hung out with and who know what I'm liable to appreciate.)

If you want some early morning metal: Baroness - A Horse Called Golgotha, Tower Falls
If you want a country tinged classic rock band: Deer Tick - Easy, These Old Shoes, Houston TX
If you want to see more King Khan + the Black Lips: the Almighty Defenders - Cone of Light, I'm Coming Home
If you want a Mexican psychedelic band I don't really know but rather want to see anyway: Zoe - ???
If you want a Scottish indie rock band that'll be energetic and kicking live: Frightened Rabbit - the Twist, Head Rolls Off, Be Less Rude
If you want a sweet Scottish chamber/indie pop band that might make one think of Stars: Camera Obscura - Lloyd I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken, French Navy, Suspended From Class, Anti-Western

9:00 - 10:30 - Thom Yorke (Outdoor Theatre)
10:30 - 1:00 - Gorillaz (Coachella Stage)

Overall I'm pretty happy that I didn't have many conflicts. If anyone wants to meet up for a particular show, let me know and I'll be down for a meet up!

Since it's sold out I can't imagine how packed its going to be this year. Hopefully a lot of people won't show till the sun is going down. But with the weather being cooler this year, who knows, I'm going to be ready for Armageddon.

I also don't have a single show in the Sahara... cr****

Friday: Deer Tick -> Avett Bros -> Yeasayer -> eat/drink -> The Specials (first half, or all if I'm having fun) -> Gil Scott-Heron - > Grizzly Bear -> LCD -> something or another -> PiL

Saturday (very tentative): Almighty Defenders -> Zoe -> Old Crow -> 2nd half of Girls? -> Beach House?? -> something -> the XX - > Dirty Projectors -> Hot Chip to see if they are better live -> MGMT?? -> two hour gap while Muse is playing and the Outdoor Stage and the Gobi are both vacant -> The Dead Weather, probably -> Devo.

Sunday: the Middle East -> the Soft Pack -> King Khan (first part or all) -> Owen Pallett -> Deerhunter -> 40 minutes of beer -> Yo La Tengo -> Jonsi, or beer if he sucks -> part of Spoon? -> Sly -> gametime decision on Pavement vs. Numan -> T. Yorke.

I heard the presale starts May 6th through rogerwaters.com. Other presales to follow through AMEX and Downtown Live I'm sure. Registration at rogerwaters.com is free, but it is a lottery system and even if you are chosen you are not guaranteed a ticket during the presale, if you are chosen you are only given the opportunity to purchase a ticket.

Saturday (very tentative): -> Hot Chip to see if they are better live ->

Hot Chip are infinitely better live than on record. I almost didn't go to their Rialto show because of my lackluster feelings about their albums, but they really impressed me. The energy level and musicianship were raised to a much higher level. Plus, there's not really a conflict imo.

reasonable suspicion = hispanic, especially if little or no english.

and I would say the state is very torn on the issue.

The pro-Arpaio people say that if the cops are arresting someone who might be an "illegal", they might as well go ahead and check status and ship em out if they shouldn't be here. The argument is largely pragmatic -- they're already criminals (cuz they wouldn't have gotten arrested otherwise, right?) and so what harm is there in checking status.

Those of us who are opposed to this approach counter the 'pragmatism' arguments by pointing to Arpaio's illegals sweeps in Guadalupe and other prominently hispanic areas (not to mention his threats against the Guadalupe city council) - they were arresting any hispanic they could find who had a language issue and couldnt' readily (i.e., on the spot) document immigration status. Not to mention the whole principled argument about singling out hispanics to start with.

Hot Chip are infinitely better live than on record.

I had guessed this might be the case. Their records are pretty tepid.

The only thing reasonable about Cops is that they don't need a reason.

Corrupt
Over paid
Pompous
Simpletons

But all things considered the Police in Arizona are pretty good and the ones in California or even better compared to Police I've met traveling in the states and Europe.

In France they don't need a reason to search you. In Belgium they can pull your car over. Remove you and search it with out a cause.

They are pretty nice in the Netherlands! At least we have some control on the Police here!

Accept for Arpaio! He's a lose cannon waiting to blow himself up.

Phoenix is where its at!

Sorry, I'm sorta new around these parts. Anyway, I agree that Arpaio even considering running for governor is stupid, especially since his "wife told him to do it" or whatever the hell he claims about it these days. Just dumb. It would be the bottom of the three step ladder that Napolitano peaked.

I bet he wins. Wins and fails and resigns in shame. He can't hide as governor the same way he can hide as sheriff.

Is anybody planning to Caravan from the Phoenix area on Thursday or meeting up for car camping entry in Indio? Just wondering since the wife and I are planning on leaving sometime Thursday before noon if possible (although late night and last minute packing and staple purchases like dry ice and bread could dent that plan). I know there are various camping groups in various stages of disarray, but none of those really seem too appealing.

I am not leaving Gilbert until 1:15. Meeting John (Mt McCabe) in Indio between 5 & 5:30 hopefully, plus another friend. If you don't get out until later, it would be nice for us to have a 4th so we can have a block rather than an L shape. I'll PM you my # and if you don't get in until around 5, let me know and I'll send you the meeting place. (Which hasn't been chosen yet.)

Same goes for any of you who don't leave until after noon. I will likely be the last one there though, and we probably aren't waiting around for anyone else.

Have fun you guys! This weekend is going to be very surreal for me...not seeing the polo grounds is going to be very tough. Please take lots of photos, and think of me when Echo & the Bunnymen play "Killing Moon"...I have envisioned that being an incredible moment as the sun sets over the mountains.

Ok, so maybe the following message should go in the tickets thread, but thought I'd start here first.

I have 5 good friends heading out to Coachella. 3 of them have their Coachella tickets, along with 2 car camping tickets. Of course it sold out before the final 2 could get their tickets. My friend Eric, who some of you have met and has his ticket, said that he is willing to give people a ride from Phoenix to Coachella and share their camping spots for free if someone has extra tickets they are willing to sell to the 2 buddies who don't have Coachella passes at a reasonable price. PM me if you know someone and I can give you his contact info.

I can't believe I am getting roped into helping them out when I'm not even going, sheez.

I knew nothing about him. I just looked at his "on the issues". Definitely a dangerous man.

Voted YES on Constitutionally defining marriage as one-man-one-woman. (Jul 2006)
Voted YES on making the PATRIOT Act permanent
Voted YES on Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage
Voted YES on banning gay adoptions in DC
Supports a Constitutional Amendment for school prayer

I could actually go on and on. He must really hate American if he wants to make so many changes to the constitution though.

Oh man, wait till you hear about all the craziness this year. Since you saw the webcast of Sly you already know one of the great stories of 2010. I'll be putting up a nice synopsis of my coachella weekend once i edit my journal and pics together. Right now I'd say LCD and Thom Yorke were my favorite sets of the weekend. Those guys went all out. Awesome, just awesome.

Can someone put up a list of bands that didn't make it, I can't remember the whole list. Damn you volcano!

mountmccabe
04-20-2010, 01:37 PM
The Cribs
Frightened Rabbit
Bad Lieutenant
Delphic
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (who were going to play with Gorillaz)
Talvin Singh
Gary Numan

Any more?

Also the Raveonettes played as a duo - just Sharin and Sune Rose - as their backing band were stuck due to the volcano.
