Coachella the weekend of April 15-18 can get 130+ acts, but the the Tempe Music Fest, which would have taken place the weekend prior, can't get 2 acts that can move tickets? I don't see why they can't get someone to stop on their way through to Indio, but whatever.

If you already have 'qualifiying coverage', then by law (HIPAA) the coverage at the new job must become effective the day you start.

If you don't, then there probably aren't any. However, there are short-term products available to fill those gaps. google 'short term major medical'.

My wife left her old job the day before Thanksgiving, and started her new one a week later. No insurance for 2 months. I guess full coverage Blue Cross doesn't "qualify."

TomAz
02-11-2010, 10:15 AM
My mistake. The HIPAA provision I was thinking of applies to pre-existing condition exclusion periods, not waiting periods. Waiting periods remain perfectly legal.

However, there are options. COBRA the old insurance, or STMM.

your health doesn't depend on your employer. your health depends on genetics, lifestyle choices, environment, and luck.

No, actually that makes sense. We just had the one massive surgery claim last year, other than that, we've barely needed it in 10 years, just a couple of ER/clinic visits. So we gambled and didn't get it. If I was still ill, I would have shelled out the COBRA funds.

(Sorry for the Smiths reference Tom, it wasn't intentional.)

chairmenmeow47
02-11-2010, 10:42 AM
oh how fun, let's argue semantics. fine then, maintaining my health does depend on my employer as the care i can receive is either dependent on them or me being independently wealthy. people should not have to make decisions about where they are going to work based on whether or not they will be able to get health care. of course how much money you make is a factor in what kind of care you will receive, but it's silly that we have to think about health care coverage when we choose a job. they should be two seperate things entirely.

Alligator Bogaloo

I misspoke this morning when I said there were two openers for St. Vincent, I didn't realize at the time that Wildbirds & Peacedrums were one band.

mountmccabe
02-11-2010, 10:47 PM
They were quite good; I wish I saw more than 3 songs. Though maybe the steel drum would've grated on me further. The sound from the drum kit was quite nice, though.

St Vincent sounded quite good. The band was actually a big plus this time, providing lots of color and texture (one guy played sax, flute and keys, another bass and clarinet, another violin and guitar.)

This is the setlist.

The Strangers
Save Me From What I Want
Laughing With A Mouth of Blood
Actor Out of Work
Jesus Saves, I Spend
Just the Same But Brand New
The Bed
(solo song, see discussion below)
Black Rainbow
Marrow
The Party
[encore break of ~2 minutes]
Paris Is Burning (solo)
The Apocalypse Song

The first song she played by herself had a befuddling introduction. I mean, she has covered the song plenty in the past but I still hadn't the slightest clue until she started strumming. First she started talking about Ice Cube's "It Was A Good Day." She talked of how she loved that song and that while she wasn't going to get into the details right now, we should listen to the song and see that it really was a good one. Many people got excited, thinking she was about to cover "It Was A Good Day," but, sadly, that was not to happen. Instead, she said that she tried to think of what was the old chamber folk equivalent... and then started into "These Days" - the Jackson Browne song (that Nico recorded and St Vincent herself has recorded) - which I mean, really. It's a lovely song and it was very nice to see her up there by herself and I'm happy to've seen it again but I don't get the "It Was A Good Day" thing at all. The best I could do was the following, overly tortured mess: "It Was A Good Day" is a song of reflection, of simple pleasures in a rough life. Relishing the fact that no one you knew died that day and that you didn't have to brandish your automatic weapon belies a melancholy underlying state of affairs. Now, to take all that, and translate it and transform it from a 90s rap idiom to a old chamber folk idiom you're going to move from pensive to morose. The swagger and wistfulness of "It Was A Good Day" converts to the sad attempt at strength of "These Days." I don't think I buy it, but whatever.

It was good to see you, Micah, and I'm glad you made it on time, Mark!

She always goes to this SCA event every year in February and is usually gone on the 14th, but this year she'll be back. My theory is that anyone that would organize a huge SCA event would never have a boy/girlfriend and that they schedule the event around Valentines on purpose.

I ended up in the Under 21 section as well last night for St. Vincent. My Recording would have came out exceptionally good if it wasn't for the A/C on full blast and those low ceilings, on quieter songs you can hear periodic wind noise, not enough to ruin the recording but definitely enough to be annoying. Anyways I thought it was a brilliant show, besides the few sound problems they had. Tonight I'm heading to Chaser's for Eyedea & Abilities, not sure if anyone else is going there or just Bassnectar.

Parking is free at Macayos and around Casey Moores (although it's in a neighborhood, so pay attention to where you park).

You could always hop on the light rail across the street from Macayos (next door to my building); it'll drop you off right by the Marquee. However, if you get out of the show late, you would have to take a cab or get a ride back to Macayos because you won't be able to take the light rail back over there.

St. Vincent at Rhythm Room
By Mike Escoto in Concert Review
Fri., Feb. 12 2010 @ 10:02AM

Reviewers are supposed to be objective. By that standard, perhaps I'm not the best person to write about Thursday night's St. Vincent show at the Rhythm Room. So, before you read on, in the interest of full disclosure, I'll be honest with you: I've been a huge fan of Austin-based singer-songwriter Annie Clark for a long time. Actually, I pretty much think everything she does is brilliant. Honestly, she could have read The Great Gatsby from cover to cover last night and I still would have given her a standing ovation. So take what I'm about to say with that caveat.

Fortunately for everyone else at the sold-out Rhythm Room last night there was no Fitzgerald reading -- just a fantastic live performance that captivated everyone in attendance.

After taking the stage shortly after opening band Wildbirds & Peacedrums finished with their set, Annie Clark and her backing band played a nice mix of songs from her albums Marry Me and her most recent release Actor.

Something that has always impressed me about Annie Clark's live performances is just how much her songs grab the audience. With a song like "Marrow" she can get the hippest of hipsters to rock out along with the music and then follow it up with the song "The Party" where the entire audience is completely transfixed on her and the music she is playing.

My favorite moment from the show came when Clark teased the audience that she would perform a cover of Ice Cube's classic song "It Was a Good Day." Sadly, Annie Clark covering Ice Cube would not happen on this night, but would be, in my opinion, epic. Instead, we got a very nice cover of the song "These Days" by Nico, which Clark dubbed as the folksy equivalent of "It Was a Good Day."

One of the truly great things about going to a St. Vincent concert is how much better the songs from her albums are in a live setting. Thanks to her backing band - Daniel Hart (guitarist/violinist), Bill Flyn (bassist, clarinetist), Evan Smith (flute, clarinet, sax) and Anthony LaMarca (drums) - Clark has been able to improve upon the arrangements of the songs she played last night. It really is a joy to hear some of your favorite songs in a live setting but it's so much better when a musician takes a song you already love and makes it that much better.

St. Vincent's performance last night was amazing and unforgettable and I can't wait to see her again. But, then again, what else would you expect an admitted fanboy to say?

Set List:
"The Strangers"
"Save Me From What I Want"
"Laughing With A Mouth Of Blood"
"Actor Out Of Work"
"Jesus Saves, I Spend"
"Just The Same But Brand New"
"The Bed"
"These Days"(Nico Cover)
"Black Rainbow"
"Marrow"
"The Party"

Encore:
"Paris Is Burning"
"Your Lips Are Red"

Critics Notebook:

Last Night: Wildbirds & Peacedrum and St. Vincent at the Rhythm Room

Better Than: Just about anything.

Personal Bias: Like I said, I'm a huge St. Vincent fan. I love everything she's ever done and think she's the sexiest woman alive when she plays guitar.

Random Detail: Annie Clark dropped out of Berklee College of Music to be the guitarist of the Polyphonic Spree.

Further Listening: I was pleasantly surprised by opening act Wildbirds & Peacedrums, a group that I wasn't really familiar with until last night. I'm planning on giving them a listen later today.

Micah, how do you feel about the Bonnaroo lineup? You have been missing from that thread. I was very close to joining you. Now I won't be.

Ah.. Bonnaroo 2010. I decided that since I haven't been before I wanted to go this year no matter what so I bought a presale ticket early. As far as the lineup goes, I don't think it's as bad as a lot people think it is. Looking back at their past linups they've always had a mix of jam band, indie, bluegrass, oldies, electronic, & world.

Overall this years line is pretty much on par with things they've had in the past. Certainly they've opened up the headliner spots with different bands than they've been known for in the past, but how many years in a row can you have Widespread, Trey, or The Dead headline. I like that it's a very different fest than Coachella and will be a totally different experience since I've never been. As far as the undercard, I can pick out at least 20 to 30 bands I'd like to check out while I'm there.

Some of those include: Stevie Wonder, KOL, Lips, Tenacious D, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, Jeff Beck, LCD SS, Phoenix, Dead Weather, The Black Keys, She & Him, Japandroids, Mumford & Sons, The XX, They Might Be Giants, The Dodos, The Avett Bros., Dave Rawlings Machine, Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers, Jimmy Cliff, Calexico, Norah Jones, Bassnectar, Deadmau5, Daryll Hall & Chromeo, Mayer Hawthorne, & Medeski, Martin & Wood.

Also with the late night sets, comedy tent, 24 hr cinema tent, and shakedown st. I'm sure I'll have enough things to keep me entertained the whole weekend. If they add more bands that would be cool but I'm not worried about it.

On a side note the World Cup is starting in June and the US will have a match against England on June 12th, the Saturday of Roo. I'm sure they'll be showing the match in their cinema tent, so that should be crazy and fun to watch that match with a bunch of Rooers.

If you like Neon Indian and the such, check out Toro y Moi which is the same style but much much better in my opinion. Tickets are only $8 and $10 the day of the show. Who's down?

Also, Yacht and Washed Out Wed Mar 24th at the Black Forrest Mill should be good too. Tickets are $12. I'm thinking about trying to attend this one as well.

I'm out but I went in 2007 and had a blast. I think you should go for all 3 days if you are going to trek it out there. I expect it to be difficult but not impossible to catch a ride if you don't show up in Seattle on Fri or early Sat. You can always rent a car and drive out there but then you would have to get your own camping pass which is an extra $100 on site, Wild horse camping is sold out from what I understand. We stayed in the Gorge campgrounds in 2007. To fly into Seattle Sun, drive out to the Gorge, party all day, then turnaround at midnight-1am to drive back to Seattle would be hardcore.

I have a 3 day pass a camping ticket for Wild Horse for our car that includes me, Joel, Tommy and Jason. We will not be getting an RV. Someone will be renting a car and we will most likely all be meeting at the airport. The Gorge is about a 2 hour drive from Seattle. I arrive early on Friday at around 3PM while others will most likely be arriving later in the evening though none of them have purchased their airfare as of yet. The plan will probably be to meet up with others at a local grocery store (stop for cooler, ice, beer, food) then drive to Wild Horse (it's about 1 mile from the venue with a bus that runs back and forth though I heard it sold out yesterday). We will set up camp at night which we have done the last two years as well. That's about the extent of it.

Thanks for the message, Amy. You knew where I was going with my train of thought.

Tomas, no way can we make it to all 3 days. Going to the one is still iffy as it is, pending our negotiations with Team Amyzzz. And truth be told, if it isn't Coachella, it's not a festival I want to spend my entire weekend at, especially if I don't care that much about a significant portion of the acts. If Saturday and Monday were in Phoenix, I'd be interested, but it isn't so I'm not. Thanks for the tip, though.

Thanks for the highly detailed information, Mark. I knew I could count on you.

FYI for those of you staying one night there are hotels in the area a few miles away. Not a lot but some.

This. If it was in the fall or something, I'd probably be making plans. I am determined to go some year, but it's not going to be this one.

This is why I like to go to ACL. too bad the lineup sucked so horribly last year.

I know. There are two in Quincy that come up on Expedia, but one is sold out, and the other requires 7 days minimum stay. I may have to call the cheaper places for availability.

Amy,

Best Western Rama Inn (hotel details) << back to search results 1818 Basin Street Sw
Ephrata , WA
98823-2100

That hotel comes up on pricelene and is about $120 for the Sunday night and says it's near the Gorge.

Also try the Ephrata travel lodge.

I dunno, but I can tell you that I don't think we can go. I don't have the time off with the wedding, and I don't think we can spend the dough right now.

Also, my birthday is Saturday. Rick and I are going to dinner, and then I thought it would be fun to go to Black Forest Mill on 49th/St and Indian School. They have 25 german beers on tap, and Sean Watson spins great music there on Saturday nights (Tomas-he's the guy that was spinning before !!!). Anyone in?

I think I went to the Halloween party there. I like the inside of that place -- nice dance floor. Not sure about Saturday though (my nephew is sleeping over Friday and I don't know what we're doing Saturday).

I would like to go to Sasquatch but I don't think I can afford it since I'm already going to Coachella and Roo. The 3 day festival ticket is cheap but add a round trip plan ticket, which is around $300 i think, car rental, camping pass... I'm bummed to miss MMJ and MA. Plus, it's two weeks before Roo. I don't know if I have that much energy to go to two big festivals in such a short time period.

Well, that's where I'm planning to be parked, so if anyone wants to come down, they're welcome to. Rick, can you invite Damon (Mob)? I can't get on facebook here and I'll forget at home.

Faxy did it last year, Pussy.

I don't know if I can justify dropping close to a grand just to see massive attack and possibly a few others.

I did it last year and at 90 lbs over weight and it wasn't an issue. I'm sure you will have plenty of "energy". lol

I think it's time you start to consider selling your Roo tickets and getting a flight credit and using it for Seattle. You can go to Roo next year when they feel the pressure to get a better lineup.

Also, I might add, Surfer Blood is playing at Trunk Space the same night as Washed Out/YACHT. Tough Decisions ahead.

Also the Paper Chase're opening that Surfer Blood show, which has won me over. I don't know Surfer Blood, though. What's their story.

In an unrelated local note, it looks like the Yucca expansion is complete. Sounds interesting.

Here's the blog about it.

Tempe's Yucca Tap Room has been a Tempe dive bar favorite for years, especially for its live music. (Photo by Benjamin Leatherman)

But now there's a whole lot more on tap.

Earlier this month, owner Rodney Hu unveiled the Yucca's expansion into the space next door, a craft beer and whiskey lounge that can be accessed separately from outside as well as from inside the existing venue. It's a quieter atmosphere, with pool tables and lounge seating.

Now, there are 16 beers on tap (in addition to 12 on tap in the original bar) and 140 different bottled beers, which run the gamut of microbrew and import faves -- Lagunitas, Bear Republic, Stone, Delirium Tremens, Deschutes, Lost Coast, Rogue, and many more.

"Pretty much every beer that was at the Strong Beer Festival, we have," says Hu.

There's also a selection of booze from microdistilleries such as Dry Fly Vodka and Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey, and aged whiskeys from Jameson, Glenlivet, and Chivas.

"We're still in our soft opening and playing around with the mix," Hu says, who plans to rotate the offerings regularly and also host tastings. A grand opening is planned for March 1, and a Big Sky beer tasting is scheduled for March 4.

In about a month, Hu also hopes to begin serving food, including sandwiches, calzones, pizzas, and fried snacks.

The Yucca Tap Room is open daily from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m.

of course, roo!!!

Favorite bars/clubs in phoenix?

i'll take a stab at this...

i love the blunt club, which is not an actual club, but a weekly that is thrown at different clubs. they are on myspace & facebook i believe, but it's mainly hip-hop, dnb & dubstep.

i had fun the one time i went to cherry pit lounge on mill for UK thursdays. i knew people who were djing though and i can't speak to what it's like on other nights.

i have had fun at myst, though it's not for the people that's for sure. it's also expensive, but of all the scottsdale bullshit clubs, i have had the most fun here & at the pussycat lounge as well. axis/radius is douche central so only go if you REALLY want to see someone.

bar smith is a neat venue downtown & on saturdays they usually do "solstice", which is a house music weekly.

aura is a good psytrance monthly, add them on facebook. they usually do their events at hookah type lounges or places with middle-eastern food and tend to have things like belly dancers and the more "hippie" edm crowd.

if you are REALLY into the hipster scene you would probably have a blast at the rogue in south scottsdale. it's a tiny place, but lots of people swear by it. i just find a lot of the people obnoxious and the one time i went NO ONE was dancing and they were looking at us snobby like because we were dancing.

as far as concerts... the marquee theatre in tempe is the best place in MY opinion to see your average touring band. they won't house the HUGE arena type shows, but they tend to have a good mix of indie, edm and other types of bands. i personally HATE the dodge theatre as it sounds like there's a giant mute on the stage and it looks smaller than it is, but some people like it. the jobing.com & US airways arenas are both good for larger shows. avoid the clubhouse if you can, place is SHITTY. i've heard good things about the rhythm room, but i've unfortunately never been.

there are lots of dive type bars that will host weeklies or one-off events, so you have to make sure to keep an eye out for events on facebook or something.

*EDITED*

if you're into freak dancing like it ain't no thing and if you're a girl getting felt up all night, head out to the buzz nightclub at scottsdale & shea. i only went there once with some girls from work and i could tell multiple stories about that night for days. wall to wall bitches n' hoes!

devil's martini in north scottsdale is definitely the place to go if you like an older crowd who's interested in status from what i've gathered. i've never been, i just know a lot of people who have gone there or invited me there. it's kinda far for me too.

kazimierz in the old town scottsdale area is fucking awesome if you can afford it. it's a wine bar, but they do have decent priced appetizers and nibbles. it's not a place to go for a full meal in my opinion. i've had a different experience there every time i went too which is rare. i've seen some serious flamenco dancers and various old jazz singers with completely different bands. i really like this place and whenever anyone asks me where they should take a date, i always suggest this place.

gammage auditorium in tempe, arizona was one of frank lloyd wright's last designs. most major musicals and plays tour here. ASU also puts on events as well. i've even seen hip hop so anything goes really!!!
