I remember going to one kitschy frat-boy mexican place in Mesa, but I can't remember what it was called -- might have been Dos Gringos. Food was bland.

Everything's bland in Mezzza.

you're a local taper? do you tape much?

I picked up the M-audio Microtrack II about a year ago and used the stock mic for a while (quickly noticed how easily bass overloads the recording) then bought the Core Sound Stealthy Cardioids and haven't looked back. I've been trying to tape every show I go to now. Took it to coach last year and got 1.5hrs of the Cure, 1.5hrs of Macca, and 45 min or so of Thievery (was feeling a little ill during that one). Taped Dylan at the state fair, Jenny Lewis before that, a solid 2.5 hr Wilco show down in Tucson when they were with Grizzly Bear.

I have never posted the recordings anywhere, just mainly use it for personal playback, but am still very pleased with how the recordings come out in general.

Last night I was dead center for Lymbyc, recording came out great although I may up the bass and slightly up the volume overall to really bring out the best in it.

I am really looking forward to recording at Coach this year with these Core Sound mics.

Are you a taper Sin?

EDIT: Forgot to add, I recorded A-trak's whole set when he was last in Tempe (2.5hrs).

yeah, i've been tapin for about 3 years now. i have many, many recordings...all of which i try to share thru Dimeadozen, Traders Den, Zomb, Demoniod, etc...mainly Dime though. just recently i've done the Sonic Youth show, Busdriver, Tool, Gogol, Dethklok (was late for Mastodon :( )...and more i'm probably not remembering. i go to, and tape, way too many shows. lol

i've also recorded the last 3 years of coachella, lolla when i was there in 08, and many other out of town shows such as the latest run of final NIN shows in LA, Prodigy in LA, Tool/Black Keys at Mile High Fest....the list goes on.

i currently run a pair of microphone madness mics (MM-HLSC-1) thru a batt box w/ bass rolloff into an Edirol R09 @ 24/48. taping can be fun, but also expensive. :D having a good pair of mics makes all the difference...as you said, the stock mic was overloaded by bass. try taping in the sahara at coach and then you'll really see how quick bass can overload a recording. heheheh...

its nice to meet another local taper though! we need more here. only a few that i know of...and most of them only do jam bands and open taping.

the further north you go in scottsdale, the nicer it gets. probably just due to property values holding and mountain views...

don't know of any complexes per se that i could recommend. you'd be safe with just about anything in scottsdale...regardless of north/south.

if you go north of camelback, though, you're getting out of easy reach of downtown scottsdale/tempe/asu area.

Dylan,

South Scottsdale = titty bars and smoke shops...
North Scottsdale = fake women and douchbags...
Tempe = All bars have 21 year old dudes that drink shit tons of jager while wearing tap out shirts.
Mesa = Shitty bars and Mormons
Chandler = Shitty bars, lots of mexicans and Sherriff Joe raids
West & South side = Thugs

I love the 7th Street/Camelback area though. Lots of decent bars for grown people and easy access to the rest of the valley.

The best place I lived was at 10th St and Highland, a small condo complex on the north side of the road surrounded by bougainvilleas. We scored a 3 bed/2 bath place for $825/month. It had it's own yard, covered parking for 2 vehicles, and you also had access to the community pool. I was just driving around looking for a place and saw a small "For Rent" sign with a phone number on it. Man, we had some crazy neighbors who loved to party as much as us.

I just learned from my daughters probation officer that the Maricopa County Juvenile Facility will likely be closing it's doors today due to the budget crisis. They will also be cutting many programs that are geared towards helping at risk teens. But we have plenty of room/tax dollars to go hunt down illegal aliens. That makes sense.

Las Brisas condos are really nice, they have 1-2 and 3 bedrooms and are located at 16th street and ummm Northern I think... They are individually owned and the few that I looked at had a lot of good upgrades (i.e. granite counter tops, tile floor, etc.) and were actually not to bad in price. Cardinals lost, Suns lost both Fri (heartbreaker) & Sat (blowout), Diamondbacks basically let Eric Byrnes go (fan favorite). I'm waiting for Warner to say he's retiring.

mountmccabe

The Phoenix Suns have had a couple 60 win seasons this decade and gotten to the Conference Finals twice. I'd call that a good decade.

The Diamondbacks won their division three times and the World Series once. I'd call that a good decade.

The Arizona Cardinals had a weak start but then they closed it by winning their division twice and the NFC once. I dunno what one'd call that; middling? Erratic?

The Phoenix Coyotes actually did have a bad decade, only making the playoffs once and, I think, having a losing record for the decade.

Oh, and if'n you wanna count it the Rattlers got to the Arena Bowl three straight years and won 11 playoff series in the decade overall.

Oops! I guess I should have read the first page of the thread. So yeah... I guess I will have to meet up with the caravan coming from Phoenix. Anyone driving from CO?

I am new to coachella and was wondering if there was a group traveling out. I either need a ride, or am willing to give rides for me +3. I will be leaving from Scottsdale on either Thursday evening or Wednesday sometime depending on work, and returning to Arizona Sunday night/Monday morning most likely. As you can tell times are flexible. Also, anyone going to camp? Arizona camp group?

In the context of their franchise history, this has been a storied, epic decade for the Cardinals. The best part is that I remain optimistic for the future. Yes, Warner might retire. Yes, they will probably have to trade Boldin. Yes, Dockett's contract is an issue. Yes, they need lots and lots of depth on defense. But, I have full confidence in Whisenhunt to work through all this and field a competitive team next year. That is a huge difference compared to the Vince Tobin/Dave McGinnis/Dennis Green days.

I think after the production we saw with Ducet ( I call him Boldin Lite) and Breaston, Q has played his last game for the Cards. I really like him as a player, but he wants out, and the Cards need to get what they can for him. He's 30 (or soon to be), injury prone...he's not going to get the money he thinks he will on the open market.

They need to sign Dockett at all costs, then get him a matching bookend on the other side. A nice big ass run stuffer in the middle would be great too.

I have a feeling Warner will stay one more year. The competitor in him doesn't want to go out on a 45-14 asskicking.

Plenty of people on here from Phoenix are going and/or considering going; I don't really know what I'm doing yet. One of the nice things about coming from Phoenix is that it isn't that long of a drive and doesn't require much planning.

You may've already gotten PM responses but otherwise I'd suggest bumping the thread in the carpool forum every few weeks until you get a bite... or I'd suggest sticking around and meeting people and hanging out at shows in AZ with folks here and something could easily develop naturally.

I was thinking the same thing re: Boldin, Sean. Kind of unfortunate because he is such a terrific player, but if the Bidwills continue to be as stingy as they're notorious for being, they're not going to pay him what he wants, and with how well Early Ducet and Steve Breaston played against Green Bay (Breaston did really well last year, too, actually), they're going to be even less inclined to give him Larry Fitzgerald money.

My ideal situation is that they trade him to the Bears so Jay Cutler can have the franchise WR he needs. Don't know who/what the Cards can get from the Bears; maybe just money so they can pay Darnell Dockett and Karlos Dansby.

This is not an issue of the Bidwills being stingy. This is an issue about what makes football sense in the salary-cap era. You're already paying a gazillion dollars to Fitz, Breaston and Ducet have proven very capable, and you have a defense that needs help. Does it make sense to drop another $10mil on a wide receiver? None.

Deal him with a year left on his deal, see if we can get something for him. Rumors/wishful thinking I heard was Boldin to the Ravens for Ngata. That deal makes a lot of sense to me. Ravens are in dire need of a WR and we need defense.

I heard Boldin wants to go to Miami. (that's where he's from)

We could get some decent 1st round - 3rd picks, plus Miami is an AFC team that needs a WR.

Boldin: No plans to request trade
January, 17, 2010

AM ET
By Mike Sando
NEW ORLEANS -- Cardinals general manager Rod Graves greeted each player with a handshake as the team walked into the locker room following a 45-14 defeat to the Saints in the divisional round Saturday.

Graves did not adjust his approach when disgruntled receiver Anquan Boldin walked by. The two shook hands, but it was one of those fleeting handshakes, like when Bill Belichick and Eric Mangini would meet at midfield. Boldin didn't break stride.

It might have meant nothing. Boldin, for his part, told the Miami Herald he will not be requesting a trade this season.

Boldin has requested trades in the past, but he appears to have a new approach since hiring Tom Condon as his agent last year. The Cardinals have pretty much proven they won't be bullied into trading him.

Asked if he would request a trade, Boldin told the Herald, "No, I'm going to let it play out."

Boldin is entering the final year of his contract.

"I can't do anything one way or the other," he said, according to the Herald. "If I go to them and request a trade, it don't matter. I'm under contract for another year. So no matter what I say or do, that won't change anything. I'm under contract for another year. So whatever happens, it depends on what the Cardinals want to do. I'm not worried about it at all."

Now's as good a time as any to note that I think I drove past a relative of Boldin's driving home from work recently. It was a little old black lady in a Lexus with the license plate reading "Boldin." This was near the I-10 & the 101 about 6 weeks back or so.

Zepp is fine but it's not like we have Plant or JPJ. Nirvana is great but i'm not some huge drummer fan boy which is why I can enjoy the White Stripes and I never enjoyed any of the QOTSA crap I heard.

Regarding Foo Fighters I enjoyed The Colour and the Shape and much of the first album as well but that's about it.

you'll have to listen to part of the band before them, unless you have perfect timing. plus, there is the local stage that goes in between main stage acts. those suck even worse than the main stage acts.

I'm really shocked and excited that Fever Ray is on the lineup. Ideally, she'll play the Mojave, conflict with Vampire Weekend, and be on 2 bands before LCD Soundsystem so we can waltz over to the Sahara right afterward and get a good spot for James Murphy & Co.
Saturday is looking like the most underwhelming day again this year, although there's certainly plenty that I'm interested in checking. Just no "omg, I've been waiting forever to see them!" acts. Like, if Orbital were there, that'd probably be the day I was looking forward to the most.
As it stands, Orbital is on Sunday and will probably conflict with either Thom Yorke or Gorillaz. Either situation will suck. Hopefully they just conflict with Pavement, which wouldn't be so bad.

Playlist at work today from my iPod:
Gorillaz - Demon Days
Thom Yorke - 10-4-2009 - Orpheum Theatre (Los Angeles, CA)
Fever Ray - Fever Ray
Deerhunter - Microcastle
Echo and the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain Live 2008
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend (I still had it loaded for some reason; I was on the phone for most of the album & didn't really hear any of it anyway)
The xx - XX
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
Orbital - Live at Glastonbury

If there's anything to be disappointed about, it's the absence of, in order, Massive Attack, Royskopp, and Underworld. Too bad Tiesto's closing out the Sahara when he was just there a couple years back. It's been 7 years since Underworld's last appearance at the Polo Field & Royskopp's never been there. Le sigh. But otherwise, very solid.

First download, post-lineup announcement: Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On. (Tom, didn't they have an album called Don't Call Me ******, Honky? I could've sworn I'd seen that in their discography a couple years back but can't see any record of it on allmusic.com.)

I bought tickets to Muse at the Mesa Amphitheater on a whim back in summer '07 and got really into Absolution and Black Holes and Revelations. I couldn't have been more primed to see them and yet I was underwhelmed. Caught them at Vegoose and again didn't feel like the hype around them was warranted. Best live band of the moment? If a band's that good, I shouldn't have to be familiar with their catalog to enjoy them. And that wasn't even the problem; pretty much all the songs they played were off the two albums of theirs I had. They just did nothing for me. Suffice it to say, I'm probably going to skip their set provided there's anything remotely interesting going on somewhere else at the same time.

But to answer your question, Tom, doubtful that we'll make it to Mr. Costello. How much are tickets anyway and what night of the week is it?

Rick, that's an interesting take on Muse's live show. I can't really think of what's not to like about it if you're interested in their music, especially the shows in 2007, but I don't doubt that you were underwhelmed. I mean, they aren't sloppy up there and the production is great.

Tom, the Radiohead/Muse comparison is so outdated and largely unfounded. This has been discussed to death, but if you've heard either band a decent amount then it should be clear. Muse's songs are more straight rock with not as many layers or mood settings. Radiohead makes more eerie and diverse music. If you think the music sounds similar then you're just dead wrong. Matt Bellamy's and Thom Yorke's voices sound more similar, but Bellamy is more operatic. And you can't fault someone for sounding like someone else, unless it's on purpose. I don't think it's on purpose, Bellamy was just born with that voice.

Didn't you tell me last year that Elvis Costello's solo show isn't very good? We were talking about Bonnaroo and you said if he isn't with a band then it might not be that good.

Yes, I hear similarities in their voices. You posted that once before. I don't think Matt Bellamy should be faulted for sounding similar to someone else. I just really don't hear actual music that sounds like Radiohead. Muse can't make songs as well crafted as that.

I own (paid cash money for) Black Holes and Revelations and wish I didn't. They're just not very interesting to me.

Costello wasn't solo at Bonnaroo, he was with Alain Toussaint and that was pretty boring, yes. I've seen Costello with just Steve Nieve and it was fabulous. I have never seen him just by himself so I am not sure what to expect. It could go either way I think.

I didn't see him at Bonnaroo so I don't know who he played with. Thanks for the clarification.

Um, wait a minute, where the fuck does this sound like Let Down?

Why did you take it as gospel when I made it clear I wasn't even sure if it was "Heroin." But in the "Let Down" video, there is a part between about 2:50 and 3:20 that sounds like something I've heard on The Velvet Underground & Nico. It becomes really prevalent around 3:13. I don't know which song, but I was listening to The Velvet Underground & Nico a few months ago and thought something sounded like that part in "Let Down."

Even so, it's more fair to listen to a body of work instead of one part from one song. Similar sounding guitar parts in "Starlight" and "Paranoid Android" do not prove to me that Muse sounds like Radiohead. Those songs don't really sound alike.

Maybe my view is altered now because I've listened to both bands quite a bit and can hear any and all differences. Maybe they sound the same on the surface to someone who isn't familiar with one or the other.

It's not that it's complex, it's that it's good. Velvet guitar parts are never particularly good, therefore there is no way anybody in VU wrote a guitar part that sounds like that.

Styx was enormously huge when I was in high school (late 70s). I mean, this predated Mr Roboto, but they were a very big deal where I went to school.

It wasn't until later in life that it hit me: Styx is (was?) a great big high school musical production. I don't know anything about Dennis DeYoung, but I am almost sure that in high school he was one of those drama nerds and especially loved when they did Oklahoma or Camelot or something.
