Round 3 - Music at the Gates vs. Clusterfuck Festival

Well it's onto Round 3 finally. Obviously, there is a new addition to this round, that being SET TIMES! Yes, all final 8 festivals have submitted their set times, which are to be viewed, judged, and criticized by you (the fan, voter). So instead of just basing your vote on the lineup, take some time to go over set times, because maybe there will be some conflicts which limit how many of your favorite bands you'll get to see compared to another festival...you get the drift. Also take some time to explore some of the smaller bands too...they could make or break a festival.

Remember, no alias voting (I know who you are, and/or suspect certain names)...and only vote if you have 100 or more posts...if you do otherwise, you're wasting your time because your vote will not be counted. Enjoy. Winners move onto semi-finals!

both Pop Life and Lost in Music are better than either of these two.

I think Music at the gates has too many stages and happens to overlap too many artists I would like to see. However, I dont like the location for Clusterfuck (sorry, i was just in San Fran, and I was not that impressed) but the festival seems to be more suited for me.

Location isnt everything, Im there for the music.

I'm going to have to go against a really strong Sunday for Clusterfuck and vote for Music At The Gates. Friday and Saturday fit my tastes more with Music At The Gates, and I can live with seeing Clipse, Doves, and Basement Jaxx on Sunday. (It hurts to vote against Prince and the entire Stage Right Sunday line-up though).

Ok question, how did Music At The Gates get away with 19 bands on 2 seperate days? Didnt the rules specify "20 bands each day no more no less".

It does seem that "the rules" are more inforced as "guidelines".

Come on Menik get David Stern on these rule breakin sons of bitches!

    Music At the Gates:
    - Lack of anything good early on Friday hurts
    - Fiona Apple v.s. Dangerdoom saddens me
    - Muse playing before Underworld?... What?...
    - Zero 7 at 2 in the afternoon!? Jesus christ, it's going to be like a sauna of non-moving people... x.x;
    - Daft Punk not playing last... seriously
    - Daft Punk v.s. Primus
    - The set times list is fugly.

    Clusterfuck:
    - 5 minute sprint from Muse to Daft Punk?... Ouch
    - Interpol v.s. Muse makes me want to cry
    - Air to Gorillaz to PJ Harvey fucking rules
    - Kraftwerk playing BEFORE Crystal Method!? The hell!?!?
    - Sunday's lineup being boss and pretty straightforwardly awesome.

My vote's for the fuck... the Clusterfuck.
    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014

Just cause you dont play last doesnt mean you arent the headliner or anything, you should know that.

Did Black Star performing AFTER Nine Inch Nails at Coachella 2005 imply they had more ''clout''? How about Richie Hawtin performing AFTER Underworld in 2003? Tiesto AFTER Chili Peppers this year? And same for Madonna, (I forget off the top of my head who followed her in the Sahara). Would Gorillaz going on during PJ Harvey on Saturday made you a happy camper since "headliners'' should perform last? Probably not.

Right, cause you looked passed that which is the how you should ya know? I voted Clusterfuck too cause even with some conflicts( its unavoidable) I would get to see a little more than half the bands on each day which is great. And the pretty long sets make good for getting your moneys worth out of a partial set if you could only see 30 mins and go to another stage. And I love the slot DEP got, all the little indie kids waiting for The Shins will get DEMOLISHED, it would be a sight to see. And Music At the Gates was done "Roo" style in a sense. I have to camp out 2 hours for Arcade Fire after Zero 7? Sure its spread out and generous time was given to all, but still, big empty blocks of time seem unattractive.

Yes, especially because those would be the stark raving STUPID Shins fans who would (assuming they'd wait at the main stage throughout the ENTIRETY of TDEP) waiting an hour and a half to see The Shins... So essentially, it'd be a process of natural selection.

My biggest problem with Clusterfuck (other than how Trent Reznor should pretty much be NIN) is the Muse/Interpol conflict, but I'd go see Muse since I haven't seen them live ever.

And like I said, Sunday for Clusterfuck trumps any one of the 6 day schedules shown; Cold War Kids -> Sage Francis -> The Postal Service -> beginning of EITS -> Tori Amos -> half of the Faint -> Kraftwerk -> Prince/Crystal Method

You can't set up the Knife in half an hour. Thats why they can't play festivals. And you certainly couldn't break down the Knife's stage set and build up Kraftwerk's stage in half an hour. Most of these stage breaks are unrealistic, and there'd be lots of lag at Clusterfuck. I do appreciate most of that lineup, however, except for the fact that !!! are up against Daft Punk, which is bad scheduling.

Music at the Gates has the weirdest, most eclectic stage setups i've ever seen. Battles followed by the Knife? Autechre followed by the Notwist? Dizzee Rascal between two post-rock groups? Plus, the unforgivable conflict between The Dismemberment Plan and Man Man. That's heresy, my friends.

Mogwai vs. TVOTR and The Knife vs. Explosions in the Sky are inexcusable.

Music at the Gates. Final answer.

That would work, except for the fact that Kraftwerk would have to set up as well, and The Knife's setup would take up the whole stage for it to work properly, so you'd have to completely reorganize the stage. As much as I love the Knife, and especially their live show, I really don't think it'd work at a festival unless they were headlining, and they aren't big enough to headline.

I'm sure the road crew would figure something out. I don't know how much stuff each group has, but it seems like it could be set up and pushed off to a small section of the stage until needed. I dunno.

And in theory they could be setting up all of The Knifes gear during Deep Dish, and then all you gotta do is swap out a few things and soundcheck and they are good to go. Madonna was "ready'' on time last year but she waited to come out, that was the whole issue. And this one is going down to the wire, it will go in favor of the winner by 5 votes or less at this rate.

Well, i voted Clusterfuck, so my argument doesn't sway my vote. Also, seeing Lightning Bolt go after M83 would be way too jarring. I don't like it.

This is close enough that I gotta do my schedules to compare.

    Music at the Gates

    Friday
    12:00-1:15 the Octopus Project
1:30-2:30 most of the Go! Team
    2:30-3:30 most of Klaxons
    3:30-4:30 most of Modest Mouse
4:30-6:00 all of the Dismemberment Plan
    6:00-7:00 most of Battles
7:00-8:15 all of Aesop Rock, lamenting missing Mogwai and the start of
    8:15-9:30 Underworld
9:30-10:00 possibly checking out the Knife, more likely staying in place for
    10:00-12:00 David Bowie

    Saturday
    12:00-1:15 Metric
1:15-2:15 Do Make Say Think, possibly leaving early to get a good spot for
    2:15-3:30 Mission of Burma
3:30-4:15 arriving late to Dizze Rascal
    4:30-5:00 M83, leaving early for
    5:00-6:45 Arcade Fire
6:45-7:00 grabbing food on my way to
7:00-8:00 Lightning Bolt. Though I'd probalby leave early (they play until 8:30 somehow) for
    8:00-9:30 Daft Punk
9:30-10:00 stay in place to see how they take down Daft Punk and set up the next band in 30 minutes
10:00-12:00 OutKast, possibly leaving early to check out the Dresden Dolls.

    Sunday
12:00-1:00 Clipse. pondering how Clipse overlaps with and leaving early for
    1:00-1:45 Blackalicious, leaving early for
    1:45-3:15 Boris
3:15-4:15 Four Tet. leaving early for
4:15-5:15 the New Pornographers, leaving early for
5:15-6:45 Broken Social Scene, leaving early for
6:45-8:00 Les Savy Fav. leaving early for
    8:00-9:30 PJ Harvey
9:30-10:00 arriving late for Mastodon, I guess, by a nose over The Notwist. And possibly staying later rater than seeing all of
    10:00-12:00 Radiohead

My main comment is that these set times are very long. The opposite of PopLife; I don't know how Boris would play for an hour and a half, or Les Savy Fav for an hour forty five.

    No real dead time, though.

    Clusterfuck to follow later.

Boris does have enough music, but I wonder if that would turn them into a drone set rather than a rock set. I'd see either, but their rock stuff is so damn good it'd be sad to see them just drone

The Gates should be held at a track. I would be doing a lot of jogging.

    WINNER - Cluster
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

    Clusterfuck

    Friday
    1:25-2:30 P.O.S.
2:30-4:00 Felix da Housecat, I reckon. Leaving early for
4:00-4:20 ...Trail of Dead, though if they're sticking to old material I'd stay longer. Damn, I wanna hear "Days of Being Wild" right now.
    4:20-5:25 the Shins
5:30-6:10 Stereolab, because everyone says Electrelane borrow from them. If they're boring I'd leave even earlier for
    6:10-6:55 Wu Tang Clan
6:55-7:20 Likely staying put/moving up rather than checking out Zero 7 while waiting for
    7:20-8:30 Trent Reznor
    8:30-9:45 Interpol
9:45-10:30 Future Sound of London, better than Audio Bullys
    10:30-12:00 Daft Punk

    Saturday
12:30-2:20 Girl Talk. Also death from dancing so long so early.
2:30-3:35 see if Moving Units has gotten any better. Possibly leaving up to 45 minutes earlier for
3:35-4:05 Junior Senior, though, honestly, I don't expect them to be that special either.
4:15-5:20 Kool Keith should make up for the previous two hours of down time
5:30-6:35 Mogwai almost certainly. I've never seen any of
6:35-6:50 TV on the Radio so maybe I'd leave Mogwai early. That sounds crazy, though, right.
    7:00-8:05 Blackstar
8:05-10:20 I dunno. I vaguely care about all three acts going on now. It would depend on who I ran into and what they wanted to do, I guess. On my own I'd probably start at the Mars Volta and then hit up some Thom Yorke when I got sick of them and then when I got sick of being so far away head to Gorillaz, leaving early to get in a good spot for
    10:20-11:35 PJ Harvey
    11:35-12:00 the end of OutKast

    Sunday
2:00-2:25 The Presets, leaving early for
    2:25-3:30 The Octopus Project
3:35-4:40 check out Sage Francis, I guess
4:40-5:05 get some food and such
5:05-5:25 The Postal Service, leaving early, assuming they're boring, for
    5:25-6:30 The Roots
6:30-6:55 if I have energy/someone to go with I'd check out The Knife and then head back for
    6:55-8:05 Tori Amos
8:05-8:30 The Faint, leaving early for
    8:30-9:40 Sunny Day Real Estate
9:40-10:15 checking out a bit of Kraftwerk before heading back for
    10:15-12:00 Prince

OK, this decision is way easy now. There's far too much down/ehh time at Clusterfuck. And, true to it's name, this is because the scheduling makes me unhappy not due to a lack of bands I wanna see. And though I'd feel embarassed for showing up late a couple days Darci Cash and the Absentee don't sound like bands that are gonna get me to get moving in the morning.

    Music at the Gats FTW.

Default Re: CREATE A FESTIVAL - ROUND 3 - MUSIC AT THE GATES VS. CLUSTERFUCK FESTIVAL

I thought "The Absentee" was just a poster mistake, as there is an English band called "Absentee". Apparently not. That won't be confusing at all when they go over to play in the US. (especially as they don't sound even remotely similar. The English one sound like Leonard Cohen fronting Pavement)
