    Default Boston

So the wife and I closing in on 10 years of marriage. June 28th to be precise. We're trying to come up with a good domestic place to go for a vacation. We're looking for somewhere we haven't already been (Hawaii, most of the west coast and Arizona) and are strongly considering Boston.

Can anyone familiar with the city provide insight into this destination as a vacation spot? The pluses for me is that it's an old city with a lot of history that I've never been to, the minus is that I heard it's pretty hard to get around and I don't know if I can tolerate being surrounded by Irish heathens. I do want to catch a game at Fenway if that works out. Anyone with actual knowledge of the city would be welcome to offer their opinion of places to visit, etc, if they think it's a good idea. Another reason we're not 100% convinced on Boston is that we'd like the trip to be somewhat relaxing and I'm not sure Boston is a good destination for that.

I'd also welcome suggestions for other destinations and what they have to offer that would be better than Boston. I'll add that we've ruled out New York City because we think it would be too expensive with all of the things we'd like to do there.

Boston is great if you like to visit American history sites. also go to Lexington & Concord and Walden Pond and all that. MIT has a cool tech geek museum if you like tech stuff. and the Boston Museum of Art is very good. seafood in boston is fabulous. drive out to Cape Cod (plymouth rock on the way) (it's not real though) (well it's a real rock, it's just not the actual Plymouth Rock from 1620) (so i've heard), or up the north coast toward NH and ME for some cool coastline views. also if you like classical music Boston is a great place.

other north american cities I like a lot are NYC, DC, SF, and Vancouver. those are all worth visiting.

also I know it's expensive but if you can fit it in your budget to go to Alaska. Alaska is awesome.

How about Vegas? There are some great strip clubs there, which I'm sure you and your lady would enjoy.

If you go, I must insist that you take the lady out to dinner at Anthony's Pier 4 restaurant, I believe it's called. Maybe just Pier 4. In any event, it was the single best meal of my life, far and away. It is fine dining, so expect to pay out all possible orifices, but I'd kill to get back there.

why don't you take Mismarta up to a nice scenic valley hillside.
Bring a nice picnic with & a boombox.
Then after dinner you 2 can make love like rabid raccoons while listening to "Batdance"

Yabs, I'm sure I'll catch a full round of digs for this, but June 28th is a real nice time in the clean little beach towns in Jersey I grew up in. I know the popular conception of Jersey and yes, that's all true in the northern third. But if you're at all interested in doing a rent a beach house for a week kinda thing (I warn you that getting something real close to the beach will be fucking expensive) and just kick back, relax on some nice uncrowded and clean family beaches complete with boardwalks full of games, every kind of sugary or salty snack you could imagine and other such crap, I can recommend a couple towns in particular.

It's rather the opposite of going to a big city, of course. Closer to the vacation dynamic of a trip to Hawaii (not comparing Dirty Jerz to Hawaii, but a relaxing beach vacation is a relaxing beach vacation). Oh, and also crazy fresh seafood and good pizza.

Why the fuck am I even trying to sell you on this? I'm going to take a pounding on this one... gotta stop posting when I haven't slept.

    "/not druggie?"

I mean... ? When did that start happening? Am I moving up in the board world or something? Or am I thought to be full of shit?

Either way, you should vacation in North Dakota. It'll be a double suicide anniversary.

ditto on whoever said there was a bunch of historical stuff to see .... the only thing i didnt like about boston was how crowded it was ... wall to wall people as you walk down most any downtown street ... SF is always a good choice like peeps said ... you can go on priceline and get a good downtown hotel for around 60 a night ... (its been 2 years since i have been there but i always got rooms for 39 so i just jacked it up some ) .... colorado is a nice place but only if you like the outdoors .. there are shows and gambling and stuff like that, but nothing like NYC or SF ... someone said vancover which is way cool (not the oregon one but the canada one) .... if you own a time share you can go thru RCI and trade it for one of those barges and tool up and down the rivers in europe ... thats pretty cool, but you would need a timeshare setup or else it is too expensive) there is always los cabos where they treat you like a king but mexico is mexico as it were ... cr*****

If you're going to consider Vancouver, might as well throw Toronto or Montreal in as well. I always really dug Montreal--almost feels like Europe but most everybody speaks perfectly fine English. Any particular reason you said you're trying to stay domestic, Yabs?

Shitty, if true. It's actually surprising the kind of shit they'll turn you away at the border for--we once had to turn around and drive back because the background checks found one of the people in our car had had a DWI 4 years ago. Which in America is totally free and clear, he'd had his license back for years. But in Canada your license gets taken for 5 years, and they won't let you cross the border. Bizarre snowy folk.

Yabs I'm by no means an expert on Boston, but just to put you mind at ease, I stayed there for a month by myself when I was on a senior project in high school, and I got around easily. Transportation is one of the major plusses of Boston. I went in May and the weather was to die for. All the area around Harvard Square is so cute and old and can run laps around Los Angeles' history. I loved that month of my life and I highly highly suggest you go there.

This is kind of a dumb idea, but I'm just throwin it out there. You could try Seattle. Half the world hates Seattle and half the world loves it, and I don't know which side you belong to, but I always have a great time when I'm there, and there's always the EMP.

I've been to Boston once, and I agree with everything positive said about it. However, I'd advise against renting a car and instead using public transportation wherever possible. Otherwise the drivers there will irritate the hell out of you.

If they've finished the ridiculous traffic construction, I imagine it'd be okay. When we went there, it was so hard to get into the city because they were reconstructing the major freeways around there, so all the roads leading into downtown were diverted, and you couldn't easily get to anywhere of historical import. I liked what I saw, but it wasn't much because of the traffic fiascos.
