    Default Grammar, usage, etc.

    I'm trying to write an SOP and I want to use ampolyguity because there are five possibilities not two. Yay or nay?

    nay.

    just say several possible or five possible.

    are you trying to use that word in place of ambiguity? If so, ambiguity can refer to more than 2 options.

    Ambiguity should only be for two. We need to make a stand and say this nonsense has gone on long enough. We're not putting up with it any further.

    While we're on this topic, society really needs to decide whether the word "sick" is a positive thing or a negative thing. I vote negative.

    Come on people. Let's do some research before we try to make up words.

    The 'bi' doesn't mean 'two'

    ambigere "to dispute about," lit. "to wander," from ambi- "about" + agere "drive, lead, act"

    No it does not. I like the ambiguity.

    SEE! See how nicely that rolls off the tongue when it's the right situation for it?

    Are you quite sure, John.
    As far as I know, the word has only ever meant vague or unclear as to a definite direction or choice.

    I can't find any evidence that it explicitly means only two options, just more than one.

    What be's an SOP? And are you really asking if you can invent a word? I mean, sure you can, but that's a risky proposition and would generally require taking time to explain why this circumstance is unique enough to require the creation of a new entry to the lexicon.

    Of course, I'm just basing all this on general writing knowledge and specifically the writing of argument papers. SOP might mean something completely out of my realm and thus I might be wholly full of shit. Feel free to call me on it if it's so.

    Vague means that the options are unclear. Ambiguous means that there are clear options and but it is unclear as to which is the right one.

    I was going to take fober and jack's side on this, til I went back and re-read John's original post. He's writing a Standard Operationg Procedure, which means no one will ever read it. Sounds like the perfect opportunity to make up a new word, even when it is unneeded.

    Technically, neither vague nor ambiguous refer specifically to options. In a certain context they may allude to options, but both their meanings refer simply to a lack of clarity.

    Refer to definitions above. Ambiguity doesn't pertain to having to choosing in particular, just to whether or not any given material is interpretable/understandable.

    ampolyguity, if you break it into pieces would mean the quality of having many loves for gu.

    am= amorous
    poly = many
    gu = gu
    ity = state of/quality
