so it just got a little more interesting

    Boredoms Reveal 77 Drummers!
Includes Andrew W.K., David Grubbs, Alan Licht, plus people from Modest Mouse, Man Man, Lightning Bolt, Hot Snakes, Oneida, Excepter, Unwound, Enon, Gang Gang Dance, White Magic
There seems to be loads of excitement brewing over this weekend's 77-drum circle put on by the Boredoms at Brooklyn Bridge Park (going down 07/07/07, naturally). Is it the numeric synergy? A show of support for Japan's premier noise-rockers? Either way, expect the opposite of boredom at what's being billed as 77BOADRUM.

Sure, Boredoms could've chosen any djembe-dragging Joe off the street to fill in their 74 vacant spots (we presume the other three-- and the mysterious "0" spot-- are going to Boredoms members). But no; they had to get members and friends of Modest Mouse, Lightning Bolt, Man Man, Gang Gang Dance, Soft Circle, Oneida, Excepter, Aa, Blood on the Wall, Pit Er Pat, Unwound, Enon, Arbouretum, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Sightings, White Magic, No Neck Blues Band, Panthers, Celebration, Negative Approach, Tall Firs, and others, turning this into a veritable Traveling Wilburys of avant-garde percussion.

Something tells me, despite the 76 other maniacs pounding around him, Andrew W.K. will come through loud and clear. From note one. Something also tells me an enterprising production company could turn this into one of the cooler live albums/DVDs we'll see in a while.

In other Boredoms news, they've got quite a few regular tour dates after the drum thing. Scope those and the complete enumerated list of drummers below.

    Drum leaders:

01 Hisham Bharoocha (Soft Circle / Pixeltan)
02 Tim Dewit (Gang Gang Dance)
    03 Brian Chippendale (Lightning Bolt)
04 Dave Nuss (No Neck Blues Band / Under Satans Sun)
    05 Jaiko Suzuki (Electro Putas)
    06 Jesse Lee (White Magic)
07 Ryan Sawyer (Tall Firs / Stars Like Fleas)
    08 Kid Millions (Oneida)
09 Andy McLeod (Howling Hex / Modest Mouse)
    10 Aaron Moore
    11 Robin Easton

    so that was awesome....

about an hour and 45 minutes of awesomeness. Boredoms in the center on a stage, everyone else spiraling out around them with Brian Chippendale at the end. Lots of tribal stuff at the start of each piece, lots of ambient stuff as expected, some very rockin stuff. EYE had 2 colored sticks and a Trident...yes a trident, to cue everyone. The black stick meant "hit cymbals and continue", pink meant "hit crash and let it ring" and the trident meant, "go fucking nuts." It was a great place to see it and it was really awesome to see. I very much want to see them do their own show. I'm still a little angry I missed them and lightning bolt a few years ago.

we waited for about 3 hours and didn't get in, which sucked.
we did get to watch from the Brooklyn Bridge. Decent view and you could hear basically everything. We left after about 30 minutes and got some margaritas.
I am going to get so blown to Cypress Hill while they play.

Nike Brings Boredoms' 88Boadrum to L.A., Brooklyn
New 88 minute composition, performed by 88 drummers

They're baaaaaaack! Japanese psych-noise-crazy-genius-types Boredoms will once again bring the clattering of oh-so-many drums to the States this summer, in a bi-coastal sequel to last year's wildly successful 77BoaDrum event. This time out, they're calling it 88BoaDrum, and performances of the brand new 88-minute composition from Boredoms leader Eye will take place August 8 (8/8/08, you see) in both Los Angeles and Brooklyn, New York.

The Los Angeles event will take place beginning at 8:08 PM PST at the city's famed La Brea Tar Pits, and will feature 88 drummers selected by both the Boredoms and 88Boadrum artistic director Hisham Bharoocha of Soft Circle. The New York event, conducted on behalf of the Boredoms by Brooklyn's own Gang Gang Dance, goes down at 8:08 PM EST at the Williamsburg waterfront.

Both BoaDrums will be free and open to the public, but tickets will be required for entry. They'll be available starting Friday, July 18 at brownpapertickets.com, at L.A.'s Amoeba Records and the L.A. County Museum of Art, or at New York's Other Music and Sound Fix Records. Only one ticket will be available per person.

88BoaDrum is presented by Nike Sportswear, who will bring you the commemorative "88Boadrum NSW Tee collection". Attendees will be able to purchase t-shirts, featuring designs by Eye, that will be hand-screened at the events.

Bringing together the worlds of extreme avant garde music and gigantic athletics corporations? Guess it's a good way to "drum up" sales. (Ba dum dum!)
LA gig will be conducted by the Boredoms. Fuck me, i'll be in NY for APW that day.

i'm pretty sure i'm not so disappointed to miss the one in NY. It was pretty cool last year, but hey I'm already going to APW. And I don't really need to see Gang Gang Dance doing this.

Yeah, especially since it sounds like Boredoms are playing the LA one, while they're sanctioning the New York one. God, I can't wait to see the Infinity sign looping around tar pits and eYe in the middle screaming and blasting music into the night.

you can get tickets online at www.brownpapertickets.com in a little less than two hours. Also, the site lists Boredoms as performers at the LA show.

I bet they don't do anything for the 9/9/09. This one is special because they're so obsessed with the idea of infinity, and, when you flip an 8 on its side, it's the infinity symbol. My guess is there's going to be a giant infinity looping around the tar pools with eYe and crew in the center, and it'll be magnificent.
