Weak Sahara Tent This Year

I don't know about the rest of you, but the Sahara lineup blew chunks this year IMO. There were a few gems, but I remember when the line-up used to be stellar all day long each day of the show.

The act that really fucked it up for me was Busy P and DJ Mehdi and I know I wasn't the only one given how empty the tent was. They gave a whole new definition to the term "suck wind".

Soulwax was awesome. I didnt catch Busy P and Mehdi on saturday because they were supposed to be in the Dome on sunday.. but they cancelled the dome. Thanks to that I could see Explosions in the Sky tho.

I'd never heard of them until last weekend but I did check them out after encountering so many excited fans. Why were Happy Monday's in the Sahara tent?

Nah, Busy P and Dj Mehdi are some of the best right now. They just come on stage , play some unique funky stuff, and have fun with it. A party and nothing more, which is a part of Dance music that's kind of fading in this day of epic 40 minute build-ups., but by listening to your mixes I see you like boring passe 90's techno. So maybe they can add some of that next year?

I disagree. On paper, it looked pretty bad, but I think the Sahara went off this year. There were some head-scratchers that kind of killed the momentum (Rapture, Happy Mondays), but I think the overall quality was definitely there.

DJ Heather, MSTRKRFT, and Justice tore it up Saturday. Hawtin and even Paul "Trance in my Pants" Van Dyk had people going crazy. Plus, Mike Relm tore it up and even the random dude (Mark G?) in the beach party area by the main stage on Sunday night was destroying the place.

Props to Goldenvoice for always surprising.

Busy P and DJ Mehdi were one of my favorite performances of the weekend!!! The "Killing in the Name of" remix was off the hook!! MSTRKRFT was amazing as well, and you cant forget Justice! Maybe you just dont know what good music is.....

I have to agree that the earlier DJs weren't that great, like Terry Mullan and Steve Aoki, but the rest of the artists were pretty damn good. BTW, Busy P and DJ Mehdi tore it up in the Sahara. True, not many people were there, but that's also probably because they aren't that well known.

first of all, let me just say that i'm a BIG dance music fan.

i caught what sounded like the end of their set:

justin timberlake
prodigy - smack my bitch up
and something else that sounded like the sound either kept cutting out or whatever they were playing music on kept breaking.

very uninspiring.

friday:

i'd recently seen mullan and feelgood, so i popped in shortly after 5p to see guetta.. he lost me at the first jesus pose.

...came back around 8:30-9 to check out benassi. he's a better producer than a dj.

i missed faithless and the first half of evil nine. i ended up at dj shadow.

saturday:

really bummed i missed MSTRKRFT but caught the tail end of busy p and dj mehdi (see above).

caught a bit of justice (nothing really grabbed me) before heading over to heading over to ozomatli and chili peppers.

headed over to the outdoor stage to catch gotan project (really surprising) and then left at the beginning of tiesto's set.

sunday:

i just saw hawtin in LA a few months ago, so checked out PvD (again, nothing moved me) and ended up at crowded house, then over to the outdoor theater for the air disappointment.

back to sahara for happy mondays (yawn) then to main for rage.

in short, it's possible that i missed some good performances. the reality (for me) is that there was no breakout, amazing, have-to-see acts in the sahara this year.

then again, how do you follow kraftwerk and daft punk?

in the past, i'd show up when the first track was dropped and stay until the music stopped. not this year.

hopefully next year's lineup is more appealling.

i found myself dancing to the music at "the do lab" every time i walked past. i also noticed that area was damn near packed the entire weekend while the sahara was rarely half full.

Yes. Sahara was ridiculous. Faithless and LCD were both show-stealers. MSTRKRFT played their best set ever. Soulwax smashed people's faces in with a brick. Justice blew the fuck up. Digitalism was great. Busy P and Medhi were sweet for the fact that Busy P and I got into a WWE Championship taunting match. Despite having a Daft Punk/Chem Bros/Underworld caliber headliner (though the argument can be made for Faithless being just that), I feel this was one of the most consistent Sahara lineup's ever and Saturday was the best single-day Sahara lineup I've ever seen.

Justice (I saw the light!), MSTRKRFT (porno mustache), Busy P. (Managed Daft Punk), Dj Mehdi (Ed Banger Style!), Soulwax Nite Version (Move My Body rocked). The night was Saturday of course. I was glad to see that Sahara dditched most of the Trance Superstar DJ's with their Button up shirts & Ties. Instead they presented the dirty-techno electronic punk rock shit = people were MOSHING and Stage Diving - Justice was sick with all the Synth set up they had going on and of course the Rage Against the Maching "Killing in the Name of" SebastiAn remix at the end of Busy P. & DJ Mehdi set blew sht up.

Ed Banger who rock with acts like Daft Punk are what Sahara needs. The other nights other than Felix da HouseCat, David Guetta & Soulwax, were ok.

Monday @ The EchoPlex in L.A. with Justice, Jesse (MSTRKFT), Busy P., Dj Mehdi & 8 Trak was insane for a Monday.

I first got into the Sahara to indulge my guilty pleasure that is Benny Benassi, and Faithless. Both of which reach got the crowd bumpin' and were loads of fun.

Saturday i got the end of MSTRKRFT, stayed for Busy P and DJ Medhi, and then LCD Soundsystem. All of which were awesome, great acts for the Sahara.

Sunday i did not catch much of the Sahara but i wish i did for Hawtin, Soulwax, and Infected.

So in conclusion, you are wrong .

I thought the Sahara tent was good, but not nearly as consistent as it could have been. I know there was a focus on live electronic acts this year, but there just wasn't enough consistent energy and world-class talent as I would have liked.

Felix was great, Richie was great, Soulwax sounded good, but I would have liked to see more techno and high-energy artists to keep that tent jamming all night.

I thought it was a weaker year too.. but Saturday it was rockin.. I know a lot of people who though Mehdi and Busy P were their favorite acts.. It was empty for sure.. but they were entertaining as fuck..

Faithless was my favorite of the whole weekend though.
