You missed a great show. It was MUCH better than I was expecting after all the negative RHCP posts. The set above isn't exactly correct. My favorite song was Donna Summer's "Love to Love to You, Baby", not to mention Bobby Hebb's "Sunny."

I waited all fucken day to watch RHCP, we were so close (front and center) by the time arcade fire came on my girl and I couldn't move or breathe cuz we were being pushed and shoved. My girl fainted and some guy had to help me lift her up and out of there (if you're reading this thanks a lot whoever you are) as soon as I got out of there I threw up. My girl cried cuz we lost our spot, we had to watch the show from the right side by the first aid tent. But the look on her face when RHCP came out made it all worth it.

Sorry to hear that, I hope your girl is doing fine. Same thing happened to me man. The majority of people were cool, but that small percentage of ass holes are gonna get what they want because agressive beats passive. I was there from Regina Spektor through RHCP. Once King of Leons started the crowd got pretty rowdy and I was seperated from my buddies for the rest of the night, but met some cool people who I managed to stay with until RHCP. The crowd got so fucking annoying between the KoL and Arcade Fire set, but it cooled down once AF started so I was relieved. They played an amazing show. In between AF and RHCP the crowd got pretty crazy again and I was getting restless and annoyed. I felt like a fucking rag doll geting pushed and pulled and I felt bad whenever I'd knock into someone, but we all knew we couldnt do shit about it. Those 30 minutes were the longest 30 minutes of my life and I had elbows pierced into my ribcage and stomach for most of the time and I wasnt getting much air. When they started the place erupted and all I remember is all these huge jockl-like ass holes pushing through and squishing everyone which was totally fucked up b/c we waited the whole damn day to see them and they most likely just came to the main stage. They didnt stop so during the 2nd song (Dani California), I got some guys to lift me up and I crowd surfed to the front. I watched the rest of the show from the left side and I was pretty far and I had to sit b/c I was gonna faint. I didnt get to enjoy Red Hot the way I wanted which sucks ... especially since they played cmon girl, this velvet glove, and under the brige. My first Coachella so I learned a lot about the crowd. Too many ass holes that youre not gonna be able to take care of all day. Saw some awesome bands, met some cool people, had fun overall. I have no idea how ppl with 3 day passes do it and Im already feeling bad for the innocent Rage fans who are close up and dont know what theyre getting themselves into ... on 2nd thought I dont think there are any innocent Rage fans.

of course thats subjective. don't mean to knock ACL, but with coachella there is less filtering required on my part. ACL just can't seem to say "no" to any band, doesn't seem to have any feeling other than inclusiveness. Nada surf?? Can do without all the gusters and g.loves too.

That sounds like i'm being a prick, but there's a reason we invented genres.

    Hey Modest Wolf,
Great take on the crowd. I hung back for RHCP. Amazing how in the open air you can't breath in a crowd. I had planned on doing just what you did, and hanging out all day just to be up front, but once I got into the place, and got a feel for things, it just wasn't going to happen. I had my first experience last year at a crowded show just to be up front. Not again. I hate some assholes elbow in my stomach. I had some weird muscle injury after I got elbowed. It took a month to go away. How rude 'fans' can be. The sound was loud enough to hang back and see it so that's what I did. It was a good show though, huh? Glad you got to see it. I had that same look on my face when they came out!!!! I Love RHCP. Hope your feeling better. I don't know how the Sunday people did it either. God bless em. IF there is one.

My sentiments exactly. I brought my girlfriend and she was so stoked to see RHCP. Having never seen them before, and being one of my favorite band, I was almost as giddy as school girl. We waited since Kings of Leon played to get a good place. We though Arcade Fire was crowded, but RHCP was ridiculous. We ended up in the front area on the left side practically on the railing. There were about 4 tall people in front of us. If you saw a fit dude with his shirt off and a Sharks hat who was yelling really loudly the whole time pumping my fists, that was me . I want to apologize to the poor girl behind me, who couldn't move or breathe, and was pressed against my sweaty body the whole time. I literally felt close, spiritually, to the people I was stuck against haha. I could see ok, but my girl couldn't. She was crying and couldn't breathe because her head couldn't get over the crowd so there was no fresh air. .i saw a lot of girls in the same situation up front. Guys tried to accomodate, but there simply too many people up front and nothing could be done. Luckily for me, I have experienced intense metal shows and moshpits to the point where nothing phases me anymore. She ended up watching the show through my camera as I was recording it. I got in a fight with my girl right before RHCP, and a lot of people were watching us argue haha. Quite embarassing. The show was abosultely phenomenal, but there was simply too many people up front.
Even though I went on only Saturday, this festival ranks up with my top performances of all time, right above Joe Satriani in SF and behind Dream Theater at the Warfield. Best part of the night? Right befote Get on Top, when it was silent, I yelled very loudly "Get on top!". Two seconds later, they jump into it. It was at that moment that I truly felt alive.

Man I have a very simlar experience as you. I stayed at main stage from Travis up to the Chili, Kings of Leon was amazing and I loved moshing to them, but it did get crazy around The Arcade Fire set into the Chili Peppers. I nearly reached the baracade during RHCP, mostly because of the pits an being pushed up there. It's amazing to see them upclose, but you hav to endure a lot. I made it to the bracade area during rage. That was absolutely aming being upfront for Rage, once again, I was pushed all the way to the front. I got there 2 hours prior to Rage because I really really wanted to see Jose Gonzalez. But it was insane. I lovd it, but I could have sworn I wa going to have a heart-attack right before Rage came on. I start having bad chest pains, and I just drummed over my heart for about 20 minutes, and by he time Rage came on, the chest-pains were gone. i could hardly breath, but i disovered, if you are up by the baracdes you are priviged to getting drinks from water bottles an sparyed down the most. It was bananas. AndI often got too tired too mosh or jump and sometimes even sing during Rage's set, I was so exhausted, but i hanged in there til the very end, and inevitably was forced to mosh anyways. But I loved evey second of it, just to see Rage up front and the Chili Peppers upfrot. the right side, near the center was incredibly, they wre like that for Interpol and BJORK, and RHCP and Arcade Fie, that's where I was Friday/Saturday. Sunday I trie the left side near the center, and it got just as rowdy because of Rage. Surprisingly near the front, there were some mellow spots where you can stand or rest on someone without being pushed or forced to mosh, and I tried to retreat to those spots when i felt like I might pass out. But it was awesome!

and also, this really tall big, like almost 300 pound guy was trying to mosh to "Under the Bridge" (during the mellow parts) and me and the people around him were like "Nooo!!! Are you fucking serious?!" It was funny, but stupid.

Well I have to applaud you for surviving through all those sets. Maybe there were more mellow spots during Rage b/c everybody was tired by then .. I was exhausted with just one day. How awesome was Interpol? Thats the only band that I really wanted to see on Fri/Sun.

I left [the VERY front of the pit] after Arcade Fire. The RHCP might have been too mellow ... or boring, however you want to see it, because it put me to sleep. Literally.

I laid down in the back and fell asleep. Maybe I should buy a RHCP album as a sleep aid.

Oh, you got me! Gotta love Fountains of Wayne and Lily Allen and... MADONNA!

Not to mention, 60 to 70% of the bands playing this years' Coachella have played ACL before (some of them, last year!). Sure, our headliners are more geared to the older crowd (I'd still take Tom Petty and Van Morrison over Red Hot Chili Peppers), but the meat of the order, the second tier and middle acts, far surpass Coachella... mainly, because we're ahead of the time.

And, organization is superior, set times are far less conflicting, and the crowd is much more bearable.

This is the speculated list. If just 40% of these bands show up, along with 60 other acts, I will be extremely happy. And it goes without saying that it's extremely similar to Coachella this year. With that said, I'd take a similar lineup, cheaper prices, more convenient organization, and better crowds anyday.

RHCP was in rare form performance wise, much better than the previous two times I saw them in the past 10 years. Those past experiences weren't great because Anthony just didn't sound great live, but he was right on Saturday, contrary to Cider Peyton's comment. And, as usual, Frusciante was amazing. Totally the band's unsung hero.

My major dissapointment with the set, though, was the setlist was terrible. If I were to come up with an hour long setlist for the band, Higher Ground and This Velvet Glove would've been the only two from Saturday I would include. I can't believe they didn't play any of the rockin, non-singles from Blood Sugar.

As for the crowd, you've got to expect the front to be rowdy at a rock show. I have no sympathy for the girls who were squished. For better or worse, that's just how it is. You all should know that.

I too, thought they were boring as hell. I already dislike them, but my boyfriend wanted to check them out since he used to listen to them back in the day, so I didn't mind, gave 'em a chance to impress me since everyone raves how wonderful they are. Wrong.... my bf even said they were lame, and he likes them.

I think their setlist was phenomenal! I've seen them 5 times (4 times since last September) and they played 5 songs I've never seen live (Otherside, Higher Ground, Velvet, She's Only 18, & Get on Top).

Don't Forget Me tends to be the emotional high of the show. My fav song live, hands down.

I must say, however, that y'all missed out on hearing BSSM live. That song is phenomenal. I'm sorry they didnt play it... HOWEVER... you got Higher Ground!! What a rare gem!!

Are there any real music fans out there who appreciated what RHCP did saturday night, it might no have been there best performance ever but I can't really understand people who said RHCP was boring, were you listening from the Campsite? Did you here the Opening jam? before Can't stop, Im not sure if it has a name, But that was a hardcore opening song, maybe 2nd to Testify. Maybe you fell asleep to RHCP cuz you didnt get close enough to the speakers, maybe you wouldnt be so bored if you got closer and Rocked Out.
