You must not know your rave history. Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Charlatans, Inspiral Carpets, Jesus Jones, etc. were the original bands that started the rave scene in the UK, the so called "Madchester" scene. Happy Mondays even headlined one of the first major raves in Los Angeles back in like 1990 or so. They belong perfectly in the Sahara tent. This was before rave music evolved into techno. For that matter, Bjork headlined an L.A. rave back then too. Happy Mondays are as much the godfathers of rave as James Brown is the godfather of soul or Elvis Presley is the godfather of rock.

Yeah, I pretty much assumed from the start that they would be in the Sahara. The Rapture is the surprise to me.

"Yer twistin' my melon, man..." Geez, I must have said that 100 times in college. (Usually when drunk, and someone starts in on some weird, supposedly deep topic.)

If memory serves (and it is hazy, being that I was there): Paul Oakenfold played after the Mondays at that Palladium show. Some crappy band called Bongwater opened. It wasn't exactly a rave, but there was a shit load of freaky dancing, and Bez wasn't the only bloke doing it. BTW, that was '91, when Oakenfold was still good, better than most of the amateurs that populated the LA scene.

Love 'em. When I had a band long ago, we sent demos to about 50 labels. We only got two responses, and one was a nice handwritten letter from Kramer (from Bongwater). He said he didn't have any budget left for new acts, but if we came to New York, he'd give us free studio time. What a sweetie. We should have gone.

No fucking way do I miss the Mondays.
As far as Im concerned they are the closest thing we have to a Daft Punk style dance headliner this year. The Sahara should be bumpin all over when they play.

Dance music with a little bit of blood, sex and soul in it, unlike that plastic Fisher Price shit Tiesto rocks for the tween tweeker set.

    Hope they bring Bez

RE: Bongwater. ANNE MAGNUSON is everything a woman should be (sexy, smart, sophisticated, a little "off center") and on the short list of women that arent Tina Fey that I would want to marry.

    There:

I was born a tad too late (and several thousand miles off course) to have enjoyed these guys in their time, but man oh man would I have loved the Madchester scene.

These guys, the Carpets, hell even more lightweight stuff like Soupdragons and EMF would have been fun as fudge.

Of course if I had been there I would probably look as chewed up as Shaun does now.

I saw Black Grape (Shaun's other group) play support for The Prodigy years ago. They were nuts so hopes are high for The Mondays.

We'll get to see how great Shaun is when he's (reportedly) straight.

I remember reading a story a few years back when noone had seen Shaun in a while. Someone that knew him said he looked like "Darth Vader with the helmet off"

Sounds more like a DJ set than a band performance.
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.
