Rage Against The Machine vs. Air

Air played at sunset in 2004 and the Flaming Lips and The Cure were after. So whats wrong with Air then Manu Chao and Rage after?

The fact no one will be able to get close or enjoy themselves due to the fact the stage will probably be swamped with overzealous Rage fans? Oh, and Cure fans are a tad bit more laid back than Rage fans. Just a bit..

I remember that, Air was on right as the sun was setting. It was awesome to just lie there on the grass and listen.
I think it would be odd to have Rage come on right after Air, it would be a really big shift in mood, don't you think?
My guess is Rage probably won't be performing until close to the end of the evening.

why the hell does manu chao get to be on the main stage before rage? i know they are extremely popular, but i think most of the coachella audience will know Air over them.

Because Air needs the sunset slot...it would be epic....but that then poses the biggest delimna for me......what if Air is on the main stage during sunset when EITS is on the outdoor stage during sunset?

Wait, I thought I read an article saying that part of the organizers purpose for extending the festival to three days was to reduce the occurrence of overlapping performances. Maybe that means being able to see at least part of two acts. Isn't that better than nothing?

Yes it is, but we really wont knwo who goes where until the week of the festival. Going off the poster at this moment Air and Rage are on the same stage. The "In The Tent" words havent been added to the Sahara headliners yet, so we'll see.....

maybe. although I remember during air's set in 2004, someone behind me kept making cynical comments about some of the moon safari songs sounding like a porn soundtrack. it was really distracting when he yelled "excuse me if I cum on anyone".

I am perplexed about Sunday myself. I really like the passion and political-awareness of RATM, but I am totally falling in love with Air right now. In addition to that, I want to catch the Crowded House reunion, Placebo, and Infected Mushroom. I just don't know, but I'm thinking Air > all else on Sunday.

In the tent is only added to acts that could go either way. Chemical Bros. and Prodigy got In the Tent because they'd played the mainstage before. Madonna and Daft Punk could have been main stage acts, so it was necessary to clarify their being in the tent. I don't think we'll see in In the Tent added to PVD or Tiesto for example, because those would obviously be in the tent. There is no one on the lineup I could see In the Tent added for, besides maybe Faithless or DJ Shadow.

I am REALLY excited about both of these groups, but if you live in the U.S., it would make more sense to see RATM at Coachella, if you were forced to choose. Why?

Taken in part from a recent bulletin from Air's MySpace:

"Air will then tour in the US from Mid April to Mid May. They will play at major festivals both in Europe and Japan during the summer and then continue touring for the rest of 2007."

Even though Air is from the other side of the world, they are planning a U.S. tour to support their new album "Pocket Symphony". With RATM, you have zero guarantee they are planning more than a one-off show. Just rumors.

Roots -> Willie Nelson -> Manu Chao -> RATM

Second Stage:

Kaiser Chiefs -> Crowded House -> Happy Mondays -> Air

If it happens like that Air has to be the last band to play becauase they can't have Air going on at the same time as RATM it would just ruin Air's set. So Rage needs to end at 10:30 and then Air closes out the festival on the outdoor theatre. But that does make some sense because i've been trying to figure out where the heck Happy Mondays fit in to all of this.

air are still around. they are still making music, they are still touring regularly. they are loved by many, but they are clearly not infused with the legendary status that would warrant a mainstage headliner slot.

now look at RATM. an iconic and adored band across the globe. split well over 6 years ago. have not played together since. are reuniting for one single gig. the musical gravity of this is enourmous. this is one of the biggest gigs, well, ever.

it is quite obvious to me that:

a) RATM are clearly the highlight of the festival, not only subjectively but objectively. they are set up to be that way. most festivals do that. remember NIN a few years back? clearly, they were meant as the headliners of the festival. remember radiohead glastonbury 2003? there was no discussion as to who was the main attraction. this year is no different.

b) RATM and air will finish at the same time, if anything RATM will finish later. to say that the headliners for the main stage of a festival end their set before anyone else does is absurd. it just doesn't happen.

i don't want to insult anyone here, so please don't take offence, but some of you show a lack of understanding about how this kind of thing works. there are certain unspoken rules about festivals that do not get broken. what some of you are suggesting is quite simply not going to happen. the last strains of RATM will end long after any other band has finished. it's just the way it is.

This is not a popularity thing. It's a safety measure. I agree that Air is a tad more popular than Manu Chao.

Manu Chao wont be on the mainstage I dont think. I think they will close the opposite stage and Air will have the sunset show on the mainstage.

b) Golden Voice will move Rage Against The Machine to the Gobi so that we can enjoy Air for 3 hours.

Dont be offended, but it seems you are the one that doesn't understand how things work. Depeche Mode was the headliner last year. They did not close out the festival. They were the last band on the main stage, but they werent the last band at the festival. NIN headlined in 2005 they did not close out the festival, they weren't even the last band on the main stage Black Star was. This is not unheard of at Coachella. Air cannot play at the same time as Rage the sound coming from the main stage from Rage would ruin Air's set. It is very possible Air will be on the mainstage at sunset. But if they are on the outdoor theatre they will be closing it and Rage will have to be done by the time Air goes on. I also don't think there has ever been a year where the person closing out the outdoor theatre hasn't gone till midnight.
