Thread: Done with 80's Reunions?

    Default Done with 80's Reunions?

3:00, Stone Roses, firehose, Replacements, etc. All great bands with embarrassingly low attendance. I hope not, but fear that this type of booking is dead.
I have been to concerts. I will go to concerts in the future.

paul books certain bands regardless of what they'll draw. you don't think he know the three oclock would play to 30 people? same with sparks and the make up. he books those bands because he likes them, not because they're going to convert a bunch of 20 year olds.

What's the point anymore? If you are running a business than it makes no sense. If you still care as a music fan and a festival then you keep doing it. Having bands you love play in front of nobody doesn't make sense either though. Also the pressures of increasing profits and sustaining the festival's size is real.

    I say its done.

it may mot make sense to you, but odds are you suffered massive head trauma.

it's all about expectations. if those bands don't expect to play to giant roiling crowds and they're happy to take the paycheck and please a handful of fans then what's the big fuckin deal, bitch?

I can see the cheaper bands lasting a few more Coachellas but showcasing anything expensive that doesn't draw a crowd is done .

iirc the Outdoor stage was packed for The Replacements, actually. The second weekend at least

How bad was it for The Stone Roses though?

That's a shame, they would have been my no.1 must-see band if I was able to go last year.

They would book Talking Heads or XTC in a heart beat no matter how much it cost or how little they would draw.

Curious on the crowd size for Culture Club at Coachella 2015. Boy George has confirmed a US tour in spring 2015 and this fall they do a handful of US shows including a LA show in a GV venue.

Many seasoned Coachella attendees or long time music fans will tell you those tiny crowd performances are the most fondly remembered/biggest priorities of the weekend.

Money isn't everything to bands, though and playing in front of 30 people for two weekends in a row might not be as appealing as you think.

Off topic I suppose, but I was talking about bands in general. Broke musicians need money I agree.

You're a bonehead if you think every stage should be packed with thousands of people. They book the three o'clock and the make up as a branding exercise, not to sellout tickets. There are plenty of other artists who will do that.

Thank you. Coachella basically can sell out 2 weekends on brand name alone. Booking reunions is part of creating buzz and maintaining the brand. Plus, I enjoy a lot of them.

But it's nice to see that Roboto thinks he has more business acumen than Paul T.

Coachella thrives by getting great reviews about its lineup from music critics.

Even if they don't draw massive crowds, it makes sense for Coachella to book these types of bands if their appearance adds strength to the Coachella brand as a top notch music festival.

Don't think he'd be very proud of his own festival if it was all crap bands and button pushers ("Think I'll take a trip to the Maldives instead during the festival this year"). In the mid/late nineties the Glasshouse, a venue personally run by Paul T, got alot of obscure brit or reunion shows and I believe those types of bands being booked carried over to Coachella. Ya know, the types of bands who play their own instruments, write great songs, and have some semblance of sexiness and/or edge to them.

So, no, I don't predict 70s/80s/90s reunion shows will be done. Hell, even 60s (Leonard Cohen). And hopefully Scott Walker in some form next year.
The pilgrimage is not perfected save by copulation with the camel.
