Oh great, it's the obligatory TomAz reality check, reminding everyone that dead celebrities cannot hear, cannot rest, cannot care. Unless that dead celebrity is Lou Reed, in which case Tom blubbers away like a grieving widow, "I feel like I lost my best friend" yada yada.

RIP Mr. Williams, and if you happen to run into Lou Reed tell him to go fuck himself.

Alright Tom, to clarify, mine actually means Remain In Peace, which seems to be logical since's he no longer in pain from here on out.

    oh and....

Robin Williams would approve of Bobert's statement. but he's dead so whatever.

bobert: stupidity is not a virtue, regardless of how consistent you are with that stupidity.

You totally missed the point, inferred meaning which was not there, and then conflated it with a completely different post in a completely different context. Packing that much stupidity into that small a space is a feat, I suppose.

TomAz I suppose is immune to ever having to utter or express such a phrase in order to be literal. Fucking twat, go fuck yourself.

The biggest tragedy here is that Robin will never be able to compensate me for the two hours of my life spent watching Bicentennial Man.

Mindfulness. Be aware of who you are, where you are, why you are. What you are doing, and what you are saying.

There are plenty of phrases that don't make literal sense but that we use every day. When we say someone is a "night owl", we don't literally mean that they are a bird of the order Strigiformes. But that wasn't my point. My point was the utter banality and ridiculousness of the phrase 'rest in peace'. It doesn't make any sense, either literally or non-literally. Wishing anything on a dead person is just idiotic tripe. You can wish condolences to his family, you can express your own grief at the loss, that's all fine (the point that bobert swung and missed on). But expressing well wishes to a corpse, literal or metaphorical, is a superstitious remnant that needs to be discarded.

Next, I will explain how one can tie one's shoes.

I hate to break it to you Tom, but there will be plenty more 'It's raining...' threads where the vast majority of posters will use "Rest in Peace" in response . Save your breath, step away from your keyboard and go fuck yourself.

I have no desire to defend the phrase "rest in peace," but you are wrong, there is a literal interpretation of that phrase that has nothing to do with the existence of a soul. In this case, it would mean that one hopes that Mr. Williams's earthly remains are resting in a dignified, peaceful manner, as opposed to hanging from a shower curtain rod.

My larger point has nothing to do with that phrase. You routinely pop your head into these threads and shit on people for what I guess you perceive as false or foolish sentiment.

Lou Reed didn't know you, Tom. You were not friends. You were not close. Yet you mourned for him as if you had lost a friend, and that's a perfectly natural reaction. You had a relationship with his work and his art. There will be no new Lou Reed songs or no new Robin Williams movies. That's as good of a thing to mourn as any. Maybe the next time a great artist dies and someone starts one of these stupid threads you can dig deep and find it in your heart not to be such a condescending prick, regardless of the phrase or sentiment.

Interestingly, or perhaps not interestingly at all, "Rest in Peace" originated from the Roman Catholics as a prayer for the dead, with the belief that uttering the phrase (Requiescat In Pace) could help move the soul from purgatory to heaven. So in the original usage of the term, the wish wasn't directly to the deceased body, but to God. But Tom's right, there is a superstitious element to it, particularly if you don't believe in the Roman Catholic doctrine of purgatory.

But it's not as if most people know or care about the etymology of the phrase, and it's really become a sort of stand-in signifier for an expression of grief or condolences or sadness or respect or whatever compels someone to acknowledge the loss of another's life.

tom, what's your stance on saying god bless you or bless you after someone sneezes? how would you react if someone tossed one of those phrases your way after you undoubtedly removed even a tiny sliver of the evil from the depths of your soul?

What does this have to do with my objection to the phrase "Rest in Peace"? You must have quite the appetite for red herrings.

It breaks my heart to see the joy and elation on Robin's face in the video, now with a glimpse of his internal struggle.

Did you really intend the phrase to mean you hope a dead body is not subjected to physical damage?
    Did you really?

But on the flipside, even though some people say RIP simply as a reflex, almost like saying "bless you" after a sneeze, without necessarily intending anything metaphysical, some folks really do. It's a bit gauche to just barge in and assume everyone's being disingenuous.
