Thread: does FGT file payments as 'Charity'?

  1. #1

Default does FGT file payments as 'Charity'?

got an email notification from my mint.com account saying:

"Over the last 30 days you spent $1,295 on Charity. You usually spend $65. Might want to look into that. Review your transactions to ensure the spending on your account is accurate. "

    and another one saying:

"Over the last 30 days you spent $1,295 on Gifts & Donations. You usually spend $68. Might want to look into that. Review your transactions to ensure the spending on your account is accurate. "

does FrontGate classify ticket purchases as charity for some reason? no chance we could writeoff is there?

they might file them as donations to avoid paying certain fees.

that's what I'm getting at, if they're doing something like that couldn't we classify the same on our end as a tax writeoff? if so I'd be getting 1 of my 3 tix for free

Not a chance. Whatever Mint is picking up and "guessing" at the classification from Frontgate, or whatever Frontgate has errantly misclassified itself to the payment processing house is completely irrelevant for taxes. I can almost guarantee they are not getting tax breaks because of this. Similarly, if you were to report charitable contributions to Frontgate you'd be responsible for penalties and interest upon audit.

The only thing I can think of would have to do with credit card processing fees. Visa and Mastercard have large fee schedules where the fee charged to the merchant depends on a categorization (i.e. 3% for retail, 1% for gas, etc) but how Mint would be aware of this is beyond me.

There are a set of codes that merchant classify themselves depending on the goods and services they provide.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merchant_category_code

This is how CCs can offer 2x points on groceries or 3x points on travel. This is also how Mint classifies the individual transactions.

    Completely wrong.

Oh, and by the way, Frontgate is partially owned by AEG/GV.
