See I left off New Lace Sleeves cuz I thought it was one of his most identifiable songs of the period.

early: I'm going to assume you know "My Generation" and "I Can See For Miles". If you don't know "The Kids are Alright" you should. Also, "A Quick One While He's Away". and maybe "Boris the Spider" and "Happy Jack" and "A Legal Matter".

Tommy: the whole album is worthwhile, but the lesser-known string of songs that follows Pinball Wizard is superb.. the riff in "Go to the Mirror" is fucking killer and the Beach Boys-ish harmonies on "Tommy Can You Hear Me"

Live at Leeds: Heavy, loud, explosive, especially the blues covers.. "Young Man's Blues" and "Summertime Blues". If you go even deeper there is an outtake from this same concert that didn't make the album but shows up on one of their box sets (Thirty Years of Maximum R&B, which is a pretty damned good retrospective IMO)... "See Me Feel Me" .. you know that LCD Soundsystem line "nothing's ever tough enough/until we hit the road"? This is where the Tommy stuff gets hard.

Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy This is a very good compilation of their singles and B-sides pre-Tommy. The whole thing is worthwhile.

Who's Next their behemoth monster hit album, this is the core of classic rock right here. I assume you are familiar with the hits, but "Bargain", "My Wife", and "Goin Mobile" are also really good.

Quadrophenia is a bit over the top, overproduced, and collapses like a bad wedding cake on repeated listens. But there's some great stuff buried in the rubble of icing and crumbs. "The Real Me", "The Punk and the Godfather", and especially "Cut My Hair" are great.

The Who By Numbers either the last great Who album or the beginning of the end, depending on who you ask. "Slip Kid" is good and "Squeeze Box" is goofy fun.

    Who Are You "Sister Disco".

everything after that is either a retrospective compilation, or sucks. "Eminence Front" is a pretty good song I guess.

edit. Oh I left out the 70s singles that are pretty great.. "Join Together" is fucking fabulous, "Relay" is really good, and maybe even "Long Live Rock" is worth hearing.
Tom, Tom, Tom. You picked out all of the gems on each of these and pegged this band right, in my mind, except Quadrophenia. I can't believe how divergent we are on this one. I think this is their true masterpiece - musically, lyrically and conceptually - and put it in the Exile/Rubber Soul/Dark Side pantheon of greatest of all time. The album speaks to anyone who hasn't been a "cool kid" in every realm of life.
I have been to concerts. I will go to concerts in the future.

If y'all are gonna go album by album, it'd be cool if at the end of your post you just put together a list of songs to throw together as a mix, as that was my original intention for the thread, but I don't want to talk shit on those who go the extra mile with their effort. Awesome work everyone.

Stairway is a classic deep cut.

Hey. Also. Requesters, something that might help for bands that don't have a lot of radio hits, maybe specify what songs you have heard. For someone like Animal Collective, I know "My Girls" and "Brother Sport" would be considered well known, but I'm not sure about which earlier stuff would be.

One of the first bands I thought of for this thread. I'll give a playlist for Wilco for sure. It's interesting to see everyone's versions of the best deep cuts. I'd like to see where Tom and I differ.

Ok, with Wilco, I'm mainly familiar with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Summerteeth. I owned Being There so I know Misunderstood. I really know nothing of early Wilco.

Can anyone do Roxy Music? They have quite a few albums too, and I think I've only heard Country Life. Even that was a while ago, but after watching that excellent Bryan Ferry set on the webcast, I need to listen to more.

This. Have listened to a couple bootlegs before and loved them, but the very little I've sampled of their studio stuff has sounded a bit stale in comparison. We all know Heavy Metal Drummer, I recall liking most anything of theirs that was uptempo/got loud when it was live. Would love to get some recs for them.

I could do these if anyone is interested but won't bother if no one wants them. I could probably even make and upload deep cut mix tapes for these...

    Queen
    The Breeders
    Devo
    Lemon Jelly

I was thinking of compiling a Beatles list, but that's pretty solid. I'd trade "Your Mother Should Know" for "Blue Jay Way."

I heard "What You're Doing" at a cafe and I had to put Beatles For Sale on repeat.

Fair trade but the list was getting George heavy.

    (What's wrong with that, amirite?)

It is, but it's in that area of the pool where the shallow end becomes the deep end.

It least in the Northeast, you could/can still hear Rocky Raccoon on classic rock radio stations not infrequently.

Plus every Saturday Night troubadour with an acoustic guitar at your local pub has this in his front pocket.

I left off all of Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road, most of Revolver and Rubber Soul because they're up there in the upper tier of the Beatles canon. Same goes for the White Album.

Long, Long, Long and Cry Baby Cry and Honey Pie could easily go on the list. I chose Savoy Truffle just because it's such a fucking oddball George song.

Dear Prudence, imho, not really a deep cut in the same vein that Rocky Raccoon isn't quite a deep cut.

    But what do I know?

    The Night Before
These all made my first list but I had to make some cuts.

So I played the opening part of each song for my wife, a casual Beatles fan, and if she could tell me the song title and sing along for a bit, it didn't make the cut.

    Real scientific method here.

"I Need You" probably belongs on the list. But now I'm thinking we just need to make the list : Early George songs that never got any airplay but should have because they are brilliant

George really got the shaft, especially early in his career as he was writing great stuff from the beginning. Don't Bother Me is in my Beatles top-10. Great inter-mixing of minor chords at exactly the right moments. Not bad for a 21 year-old Scouser who couldn't read music.
