Thread: Your top five acts of Coachella 2014 (Weekend Two Edition)

Default Your top five acts of Coachella 2014 (Weekend Two Edition)

I was waiting for someone else to create a weekend 2 top 5 set list ranking, but since no one else did, I decided to do it myself.

Friday was my favorite day of Coachella ever, though my favorite overall Coachella is still 2013. Saturday and Sunday just didn't grab me enough this year.

    1. ZZ Ward - I was front row, and also got a drumstick at the end of the set, it was one of my top 5 or top 10 Coachella sets of all time, she simply killed it. I was wandering around the Mojave tent during Title Fight thinking about how awesome that set was. That is what music is all about to me, and why I keep coming back to Coachella.

    2. The Replacements - I was 3rd row, and talked to some of the most dedicated music fans I've ever met around me. 5-10 people around me came to Coachella solely for the purpose of seeing The Replacements. They sounded awesome, and put on a fantastic show, cool to see Billie Joe Armstrong guest for them most of the set.

    3. AFI - I've seen AFI 4 times before, and they always put on a great show. This time I was 3rd row center, and was able to get a hand on Davey when he came into the crowd, and he also gave a death stare to either me or the guy in front of me when he came into the crowd lol.

    4. Pharrell Williams - an amazing crew of special guests is why this is on here - the most special guests for a Coachella set that I've ever seen. So many good songs, and I even noticed that the backup dancers were the best that I've seen for a set.

    5. Lorde - before her set started, I wasn't too concerned with getting up close during Capital Cities, because I figured that she would sound just like the CD and wouldn't add much to the performance live. I was really impressed, she is sincere and what you see is what you get. I thought the moment where she said to raise something up if you are scared of growing up was a great moment - maybe because I'm getting older in general and in terms of Coachella, and I wonder what is next. She played Royals 3 songs early though, so I bet 30% of the crowd left at that point - just like Gotye in 2012.

    6. Trombone Shorty - the guy is so talented, with trombone, trumpet, drums and singing. His cover of Green Day's "Brain Stew" was my favorite song I heard from anyone all weekend.
(and yes I realize there are 6 here, but I honestly couldn't just pick out 6)

HM: Ellie Goulding - 3rd row, I know most of her songs, and it was great to finally see her live, and good lord she is hot
Bo Ningen - an awesome way to start the day, some great guitar breakdowns, and fun seeing them come into the crowd
Pixies - an awesome show, the crowd was super into it, wish I had known their song catalog better
Calvin Harris - yes I know he is easy to rag on, the main stage area was packed - and I thought it was a fun time
Unlocking the Truth - the 13 year olds brought it from start to finish, starting circle pits, and general mayhem, including crowd surfing at the end
The Dismemberment Plan - front row center, a fun show and great way to close out Saturday
Saints of Valory - really like their Coldplay ish melodic sound, front row again, great way to start out Sunday
Anti-Flag - more punk fun, including a couple massive circle pits, great way to close out Friday
Neutral Milk Hotel - I was eagerly anticipating them, and they didn't disappoint. Kind of annoyed to not get closer, mainly due to Lana Del Rey fans
Disclosure - really catchy set, and nice to see the special guests make an appearance - Alunageorge, Mary J Blige, Sam Smith
Chvrches - they started late but still put on a great set, Lauren is hilarious lol

    Worst: Julian Casablancas by far

Outkast: As a fanboy going in with moderate expectations after hearing of the weekend one let down, I absolutely loved it. Nice first album run from "Hootie Hoo" to "Crumblin' Erb" to "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" to "Player's Ball." A couple people told me they were bored during Andre's solo part; "She Lives On My Lap" and "Prototype." Those people can fuck off. I'm still a little irked that they opened with B.O.B., but besides that the set was well-paced. Quite surprisingly, I found "Roses" to be my favorite part -- great sing-a-long. I think everyone around me either loved me or hated me for rapping along with every word to every song... A+

Future Islands: Got chills later thinking about how after they opened with "Back In The Tall Grass," and how Sam (frontman) told the crowd how grateful they were to all of the people that traveled there that day from a long way from home to see them. Shout out to JorgeC & Crombrenner for the dance party of the weekend. Don't cast away, don't cast away... So many highlight songs but "Tin Man," "Doves" and "Spirit" stand out to me right now. A+

Beck: The extended "Debra" jam was everything I could have asked for and more - So many shout outs to Glendale and Hyundais. Not to mention "Billie Jean" and the "Where It's At" jam out to end it. Sexy. Hell fuckin yeah. A

Nas: One of the greatest hip hop lyricists of all time was on point Saturday night on the Outdoor. A cappella verses with a silent crowd watching in awe was masterful. He sounded crisp. "Made You Look" was a lot of fun. Lauryn Hill was a fun surprise. A-

Arcade Fire: Impossible to match their 2011 set, but there's no arguing that they were good Sunday night. Maybe I was tired, but I didn't get too emotionally invested. The new songs were great live. B+

Agree with pretty much everything in this post. Outkast and Beck made my weekend 2. A few others as well but Outkast's improvement from Weekend 1 was perfect. We should have kicked it! I was rapping every word too.

    Top 5 weekend 2:

Little Dragon: They are the best. The new songs are mind blowing. Cannot wait to continue watching this band.

Outkast: What a set, what an improvement. Amazing setlist, Southernplayalistic tracks, everything in between. Everything was carefree and tight. Perfect.

Beck: On my birthday, perfect thing after a sweaty dance part of a Little Dragon. Kick back with friends and enjoy Beck's storytelling. Funniest frontman in history? Maybe.

Solange: Performer. Dancer, singer, perfect voice and a sick band. She deserves more recognition/fame. Girl has everything.

Warpaint: I want to give it to someone else because they were my favorite of first weekend but I can't help myself. They are so talented and they make some incredible music.

HM: Jagwar Ma (got real close and had a blast), The Knife (first time ever seeing the knife. I don't understand the hate. They were amazing. Karin sounded so good. Makes me miss Fever Ray), The Replacements (just a fun, great sounding set), Nicolas Jaar (maybe the best DJ set of the weekend, he was awesome with Darkside first weekend but this might have been even more impressive. He worked the yuma soundsystem like a champ), Banks (girl is can sing and if she had a little more stage presence she will get huge), Tiga (he's still got it, great club DJ), Nas (full of guest appearances, a real hip hop show, Lauryn Hill gave me goosebumps), Rudimental (had only listened to their album once and they didn't interest me at all but I had a feeling their set might be fun. There was a lull in scheduling so my gf and I stopped by and honestly saw one of the more fun, dancey sets of the weekend. the entire crowd was loving it),

Bo Ningen (so great and noisey and crunchy. my friend said he saw Yukimi from Little Dragon in the crowd... I'm pissed he didn't tell me earlier), Factory Floor (great 1 2 with Bo Ningen, been waiting to see these guys for so long and they delivered. they deserve to be on at midnight), James Vincent Mcmorrow (his voice is the real deal, would not be surprised if he comes back within 2 years and plays to a much bigger crowd.) Jhene Aiko (if the soundmix was right this might have been one of my favs of the weekend, the vocals were way too loud but the set was full of great tracks and she's a great performer.), and Motorhead (one of the best sounding bands of the festival. Shredding. Maybe the drummer with the best chops as well).

You nailed it on this one. Agree with every single word, other than the grade, which I'd go with an A+. I never in a million years would have expected my #1 to be Beck . . . I wasn't even planning on watching him. We wondered over as Devil's Haircut started . . . and left when his set ended. This was one of the best times I've had at Coachella, period. Really, just magic.

    2. Darkside. These guys are just amazing. My favorite thing in the world right now. I'd seen them before and loved them, but nothing can beat a tent, at night, at Coachella.

    3. Nico Jaar. I'm obsessed. I admit it. Anything this guy does is gold. He spun about the sexiest set I've ever seen at Coachella.

    4. Disclosure. Unsurprisingly, this was a great party at the Outdoor. Help Me Lose My Mind is amazing.

    5. Capital Cities. They brought their A game. What else can I say? I never expected them to be as fun as they were. A little reminiscent of Cut Copy from a few years ago but on the Outdoor instead of a tent. Just a blast all around.

HM: Everyone I saw in the Yuma. I spent a good amount of time in there and caught pieces of lots of sets. Always great.
HM: Mogwai. Not quite GY!BE or Sigur Ros amazing, but who is, really?
    Darkside (1/25)
    Oneohtrix Point Never (2/7)
Four Tet (3/7) / Voices from the Lake (live) (3/7)
    London Grammar (3/25)
    Trentemoller (4/5)
    Factory Floor (4/15)
    Coachella (4/18-4/20)
    Haxan Cloak (5/15)

    1. Empire of the Sun - Was not planning to see them but decided to stick around after Fatboy Slim and ended up ~5 people from the front (so I guess I missed the overcrowdedness in the back). Good decision as *everyone* around me was dancing and having a fucking blast. The Alive closer was supreme.

    2. Warpaint - Completely on point. I hope they aren't peaking. Just an amazing set.

    3. Beck - Better than AF by a mile.

    4. Darkside - Caught them because of their recent St. Vincent remix and was not disappointed.

    5. Little Dragon/Foxygen

Honorable mention to Kate Nash who I just wandered into and loved.

I watched the first 25 minutes of them with a group of friends from the very back right of the tent and it never really seemed too overcrowded.

    In alphabetical order:

    Beck
Broken Bells (I'm curious as to if I was recorded, as I dancing like a damn fool during this set.)
    Darkside
    Fishbone
Frank Turner (The hardest I'd smiled in a long time.)
Lorde (Exceeded my already high expectations.)
    Outkast
    Trombone Shorty
    ZZ Ward (Adorable and engaging.)

Bonobo - I actually saw them at another venue the week before because of conflicts--he was still a "see or die".

    1. Arcade Fire - I've been wanting to see them for a while and so this performance was pretty special to me. So much energy from start to finish, and I was right in front of Regine when she sang Its Never Over on that elevated stage, and then after their set was over I was face to face with Win when he walked around with a megaphone. Overall, just a very surreal set that I consider top 5 all time that I've seen at Coachella. I'm convinced they're easily one of the best live touring acts right now.

    2. Queens of the Stone Age - Again, another band I've never seen and have been obsessed with since I first heard Songs of the Deaf some number of years ago. I had a pretty good spot up front for this and I was just amazed by how tight they were as a band. The tricky starts and stops were executed perfectly and Josh's vocals sounded just as good if not better than on record. Oh yeah, and of course they were loud as fuck, at least from where I was standing, which made it even better.

    3. Beck - I wasn't sure what to expect from Beck having heard mixed reviews of his live performances, but I watched the live stream from Weekend 1 and I knew he was a must see. He really found the perfect balance of anthems that got the crowd involved and softer folk numbers.

    4. Outkast - They stepped up their game and even though I didn't have the best view of the stage I still enjoyed myself. There was nothing better than seeing Andre so into it and the crowd much more responsive than the week before.

    5. Warpaint/Haim - Its tough to choose which one was better because during both sets I got the irresistible urge to dance my ass off. I had seen Haim once before and I think they were better this time. Warpaint really impressed me with their stage presence and chemistry. They really have the presence of a veteran band, and any band that can get me dancing (usually I just stand and watch) is a winner in my book.

    HM:

Darkside - There is really no other performance I've seen live that I could possibly compare to Darkside. The slow intense buildups that led to these moments that carried the whole crowd. I was exhausted by this point on Saturday but seeing Darkside energized me.

ZZ Ward - I haven't seen many early afternoon sets as lively as the performance she put on. Everyone was clapping, dancing around, and she got an unbelievable amount of applause. I was sort of shocked at how there was hardly anyone just sitting around killing time or laying down. ZZ can flat out groove and its infectious.

Neko Case - The crowd may have been small but she was on point and her band was great too. She seemed slightly unnerved that everyone left the Outdoor following Haim's set, but she still brought it, and managed to poke a little fun at the idea of her not getting a later set time. Also, the cloudy weather was so fitting, especially during This Tornado Loves you.

The Replacements - It was great talking to a lot of old school fans who have been listening to them since the beginning and then getting to see why they love them so much. Fantastic show overall, the Billie Joe surprise was really different, but it was cool to see a band like them rocking out after all these years for all the right reasons.

Mogwai - I had to miss most of their set because of QOTSA, but the last couple songs that I catch were brutal. I'm glad I brought earplugs. I only wish I was able to watch all of their set.

Speaking of Warpaint, I'd like to say that "Disco//Very" is about 5 billion times better live than it is on the album.

Saw all but a few of my top choices weekend 1, tried to see all new acts week 2...For most, part, felt I made the right choices week 1 but these week 2 sets were awesome.

    1) The Replacements - Favorite set of either weekend...not polished, but as spontaneous as hell and Bastards of Young top moment of entire fest for me.
    2) Trombone Shorty - The previous day watching Aloe Blac caught myself thinking, wow, lot of soul/electro soul on this year's lineup, but where's the grittier, more rocking Sharon Jones/Vintage Trouble/Black Joe Lewis style funk. Found that here with an obvious Louisiana spin.
    3) Bonobo - First album I will buy post Coachella
    4) Flatbush Zombies - expected nothing from this set, left Sunday night feeling it had been best rap set of weekend.
    5) Tie - Nas/Outkast - two legendary hip-hop acts deliver week 2. So glad I held of on Outkast til week 2...had a feeling even before week 1 their might be a Stone Roses kind of week 1/week 2 flow to how they performed and I was right.

Caveat - I did see a few sets again (Graveyard/Churches/Future Islands) if I was including them a second time..Future Islands would be #2 this week...just seems to be their moment right now.
The Replacements - Bryan Ferry - Outkast - The Knife - Dum Dum Girls - Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Broken Bells - Haim - Neko Case - Jagwar Ma - Goat - Waxahatchee

Queens Of The Stone Age - Pet Shop Boys - Chvrches - Mogwai - Warpaint - Washed Out - Future Islands - Ty Seagall - Darkside - Foxygen

Beck - Neutral Milk Hotel - Superchunk - Arcade Fire - Bombino - Daughter - Surfer Blood

    1. Arcade Fire
I can't imagine a better way to end the weekend than going from Beck to Arcade Fire. I thought the Paft Dunk joke was hilarious, and it certainly got the crowd into it from the start. Not to mention, I was in about the fifth row, center stage. Just a magical fucking set.

    2. Capital Cities
These guys stole the show at Sasquatch last year as the opening band on the main stage. I knew I couldn't miss them during a better time at Coachella, and boy, was I right. Just a huge dance party that ended with everyone taking off their shirts and rocking the fuck out.

    3. Queens of the Stone Age
I'm not qualified to say who the two best subhead performances have been in Coachella history, but QOTSA and Beck on Saturday/Sunday have to be up there. Josh Homme can do no wrong. Simply a perfect rock performance. Although, I was holding out hope for a Dave Grohl cameo on drums because you know, Coachella.

    4. HAIM
Wow. I only just started listening to them in the couple months leading up to Coachella, and they blew my mind. Not only did they play the hits, but they jammed, showing some serious rocking power. There are a lot of directions these girls can take in the future. It'll be interesting to see where they go! (Not to mention, a killer rendition of "Red Eye" with Kid Cudi the next day)

    5. Beck
Like I said, two amazing subhead performances on Saturday and Sunday. The "Billie Jean" cover was perfect, and I loved the short-but-sweet Arcade Fire cover with a nice story. I was honestly pretty surprised by how awesome Beck was. But his stage presence combined with the ultimate setlist made it one of the most memorable sets for me.

A couple people told me they were bored during Andre's solo part; "She Lives On My Lap" and "Prototype." Those people can fuck off. I'm still a little irked that they opened with B.O.B., but besides that the set was well-paced. Quite surprisingly, I found "Roses" to be my favorite part -- great sing-a-long. I think everyone around me either loved me or hated me for rapping along with every word to every song... A+
    all of this.

except i think my favorite part was the dude crumbing herb during crumblin' 'erb in front of me.

    1. Arcade Fire - what a spectacle of performers, the Daft Punk prank was genius and let everyone know we were stuck with them and only them (oh bummer)
    2. Jagwar Ma - infectious energy that is off the charts
    3. Fatboy Slim - only act we caught in the Sahara and had a blast - "Right here, right now" (partied with Astronaut too!)
    4. Blood Orange - perfect sound at the perfect time of day with the perfect people to share it with
    5. Future Islands - the level of emotion throughout the performance was unlike anything I've ever seen, Sam is captivating

HM - Outkast, Woodkid, Bombay Bicycle Club, Holy Ghost, Washed Out, QOSA, Beck, NMH,

1- Jagwar Ma- SO much fun. totally reminded me of early 90's UK stuff like Primal Scream (I was actually wearing a Screamadelica shirt that day too)
2-Outkast- huge Outkast fan and it was a dream come true to see them. still kicking myself in the ass for not seeing them in 2000, but glad I saw them on Friday. legendary.
3-Temples- they sounded great live, and they were a band I knew little about going into the show but wanted to check out. had so much fun here too- there was a group of like 20 friends next to me just going crazy, jumping around lunatics, throwing each other in the air. that added to it for sure.
4-Warpaint- holy shit these girls are great musicians. I was really impressed by Haim and their musical abilities, but Warpaint took it to another level. the bass player dancing with her bass in a sexy way was a total turn on.
5-Girl Talk- 4th or 5th time I've seen him, and he just gets better and more fun everytime. had a blast.
