Thread: Is Coachella Usually This Dangerously Packed?

Default Is Coachella Usually This Dangerously Packed?

Not going to lie, I am kind of disappointed in the large amounts of people at Coachella. Sure it's a music festival and it's expected but everywhere I went, the crowds were just ridiculous. I had to leave several sets because it was just dangerous to stay and the fear of getting crushed was serious, granted I am only 5' tall but still. Empire of the Sun at the Sahara being one of those instances where I booked it. I went to the tent 30-40 mins before it started with the hopes of finding a good safe place to stand where I wouldn't get crushed so I stood at the back left corner by the railing... within mins the tent got so packed that I left even before it started. People were packed like sardines. Not even shoulder to shoulder but just squished. Had there been a fire or emergency, there was no effing way paramedics would have been able to get to anyone in there without getting trampled on.

Flume was another one. I was in the middle and as soon as the music stared everyone in the middle went batshit crazy and started pushing and shoving everyone. I immediately left because the guy next to me took no consideration of the people surrounding him and just was going crazy and he was elbowing people in the face because we were so close. I was literally in the guy standing in front of me pits from how closely packed those tents are. Seriously, those tents are not big enough to house the amount of people that go. I ended up just saying "fuck this" and heading to the Yuma tent to dance.

Granted I've been to big festivals like Bonnaroo and I've never felt like my life was in danger. Example last year for Paul McCartney at the main stage there was a good 100,000 people for that set and I never felt scared of getting crushed.

you are over exaggerating, shit was crowded but not dangerously.
Whenever people were getting shoved or pushed everyone else in the crowd would either pick them up or hold them up so they never fall again.

If you felt like your life was in danger music festivals are not for you...even roo.

7th Coachella and Empire of the Sun was the first time I thought a crowd was dangerously packed. It was getting desperate in there and people were pushing, shoving, and having panic attacks all over the place. I saw an entire section of about 50 people fall over like a wave breaking in the ocean. Pretty sure they turned the rear facing Sahara speakers off to try to disperse the crowd a bit. Shit was crazy.

Try being 10 ft from the front rail when "Daft Punk" appears at an Arcade Fire set!

No, not exaggerating at all. You obviously didn't even read what I said, did you? Reading comprehension goes along way.

If you want to see overcrowded, get in a time machine and go back to 2010.

I heard about 2010 but this year it was pretty bad. I really think they need to reconsider expanding their tents. Seriously, if they ever have an emergency, shit is going to go down and a lot of people will end up being seriously injured.

The only time I felt it was too crowded was when I was close to the stage at Rage Against the Machine. I had security pull me out because I was getting too squished. Otherwise, if you know you are going to a festival with 80,000+ people, why would you go if you felt you were in danger?

Because I have been to numerous music festivals larger than coachella and it's never a huge clusterfuck like it is in coachella.

Seriously. 2010 was absolutely insane. THAT was insanely packed. This year wasn't too bad at all. Especially with the Do Lab being moved.

Unruly crowds annoy the fuck out of me, but there was only one instance that I can think of this year where I felt thusly annoyed (trying to take a piss between Mojave and Sahara during Pixies). I certainly have complained about Coachella crowds in past years, but it didn't seem so bad this year. OP, just stop going to shitty sets and you'll be good.

I guess it depends on which acts you go see. In general it was less crowded this year than in past years (2005-2013). The only really crowded act I saw was Fatboy Slim, but it did not feel dangerous--if I didn't have a backpack on it would have been OK I think. But, I did see the huge herds of people migrating from one "popular" act to another. For example, I did not go see Calvin Harris, Lana Del Rey, Empire of the Sun, etc. This year it seems like only the pop and EDM acts got huge crowds, which is fine with me--leaves me more room! For reference, in 2010 the opening act (Gobi or Mohave) was packed with people out the back!

I didn't think it was bad this year. But my friends and I tried to see Zedd (yeah yeah, I know) and the crowd was crazy packed. We couldn't even get to the middle nor get back out. I had tô pretend I was security in order to get out of there alive. After that night I vowed to never set foot in the Sahara tent the rest of the weekend.

The plural of pit does not have an apostrophe.

Cara what is your position on using apostrophes to show plurals of acronyms? of numerals?

I saw some really good acts (The Internet being one of them) where the crowds weren't a royal clusterfuck and those were quite enjoyable.

    You are an outstanding human.

And as for crowd clusters, it's always contingent on the acts. I find it really easy to predict what crowds will be packed shitshows, and luckily they tend to be acts I'm not interested in any way.

I'm not sure what year was the most crowded (it probably WAS 2010) but this year was far from crowded. But that doesn't mean that certain stages won't get full from time to time. I didn't make it into the Sahara at all this weekend, because it seemed to always be overflowing with people.

I've gone W1 2012-2014 and felt this year was easily the most crowded of those 3 years.

However, there is a difference between annoyingly crowded and dangerously crowded and I thought this year was the former.

I usually never go to the Sahara after dark, although I was there twice this year which was a first in years. I was there for The Big Gigantic and was at the front rail, which hasn't happened at the Sahara since 2008. I was so confused and then realized it was because everyone who is usually at the Sahara was at Calvin Harris. The 2nd time I was there was for Empire Of the Sun, and it wasn't that bad at all, but I still don't enjoy that tent while its as crowded as it was, so I left. 2010 was by far the worst. This year seemed fine to me.
