Thread: Should Coachella do away with pre-sale?

  1. #1

Default Should Coachella do away with pre-sale?

Okay so after the reviews of weekend 1 a lot of boardies and artists are clearly frustrated with the demographic shift in this years festival. I had a great time this year and didn't really mind what other people were doing, but I can see where people are coming from. No way in hell should arcade fire not of pulled one of the biggest crowd this year nor should there be paltry attendance for queens, muse, beck, neko case, afghan whigs etc.

So what is the solution here to diversify the crowds in such a way that these sort of artists can get their fans to the fest? It's not like they're all that irrelevant, as muse queens beck and all these artists do well at other fests around the world. I think it's more an issue of fans of these artists have no clue whose on the lineup and would like to see said lineup before they commit to anything. So perhaps much of the problem is in the presale? That way the people who are buying tickets to the event are buying them not only for the experience, but largely for the lineup itself. However, presale is a great business decision and it would almost be foolish to leave that guaranteed money on the table. So I will post some options of what we can do going forward to ensure the integrity of the fest isn't lost in the long run.

Maybe if they announce a few select acts at the same time as the pre-sale. Of course, make these obscure classic, non-EDM cheese acts, hopefully scaring away some of the 'Sahara bros.'

This year was my first w1, so I wasn't sure if it was just a nicer crowd in w2 generally, or if it was a function of this year specifically.

i think the rise in attendance has more to do with publicity than anything else. getting rid of the presale would make it MUCH harder to plan for lodging in an already tight marketplace. i know i would be hesitant to put a deposit down on a house for example without knowing if i had a ticket. plus air travel.

I'm so glad that I do presale... It's the only way I can guarantee that I'll be going every year.

I would suggest adding another presale, before the public one, specifically for those who purchased passes the prior year.

presale has nothing to do with any of this.

The 'good' fans I know buy tickets during pre-sale.

The 'bad' ones buy them when the lineup drops.

I say they should increase the number of tickets available during pre-sale and let real fans snag most of them.

I'm going to sound like a perv, I have thought about this but then I think about all the hot 18-20 yr old girls that make my day.

But then, it would be VERY nice to drink outside the beer gardens. My vote goes to a 21+ weekend!

The "good" fans? Pretentious much? I buy after the lineup drops because that's when the travel packages go on sale.

The problem with buying after the lineup is released is that you're at the mercy of the general on sale.... I've done presale/layaway the last several years because I know it's the only way I'll be guaranteed to get a ticket.

This isn't true. Valley Music Travel has packages that go on sale during presale the same time as regular passes, and you're even able to do a layaway payment plan. Same goes for Safari and Eldorado and any pass option. I believe the travel packages remain on sale long after the presale ends, as well.

I have been every year and I know the line up will always be good so I don't need to know it before I purchase tickets. If I don't know and act I research before I go so I don't miss anything new. There are always conflicts and not much down time so I think the lineups are always full. Some parts of it are not to my taste but there is always something for everyone. I am more worried that some year I will not even be able to get presale tickets because Coachella is a scene now and not just for the music! The topper is-Sephora can fix your makeup???? Geez!

You guys know this is still a business right?
Pre-sale lets them get money in advance and book acts etc.
    Pay for the art installations.

    That snail? That moon man?
    Financed probably through Pre Sale.

What other Festival invests that heavily in art. Cleaning the grounds. And maintaining that grass (through wk1).

European Fests that I've been to have been dustbowls / mud baths.
Same goes for New York's Governors Ball.

I like how you're thinking though.

Demographic shift. Age shift as well. You guys keep getting older - the crowd stays the same age, and you no longer have that interaction / connection with the pop acts of the day. I think the Festival is great - its just Sahara needs to be reworked a bit.

Flume should have been in (a reworked) Sahara. Kudos for sticking Empire of the Sun in there and for booking 90s throwback Fatboy Slim (who I skipped bc its not my thing personally but he was a huge draw for millenials who graduated highschool in the late 90s / early aughts).

Chella was definitely (IMO) less bro-ey than last year. Last year all the bros came out riding high off of 2012's EDM year, and were disappointed by the lack of EDM artists in the undercard. I think this year saw a correction for that, and a move towards more sophisticated electronic acts through YUMA, and around the festival grounds in Gobi, Mojave and Outdoor (Disclosure, Flume, Darkside, Bonobo, PSB).

    Chella=1
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

Yeah okay. So a lot of people may or may not like the fact that they paid for a ticket to show they don't wanna see after all. You could always sell the ticket you have and go somewhere else. Seriously though, I don't know if I would have been able to secure a weekend 1 ticket when the general onsale took place.

I don't think the presale is the problem. In my experience bros don't plan ahead.

I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that presale=shitty crowds. I'm pretty sure douchebags are inevitable every year. I love presale because I can (1) finance my ticket, (2) be guaranteed a ticket, (3) and make plans for that year. Goldenvoice hasn't let me down yet. I will buy without seeing the lineup first.

Though I'm not opposed to a 25+ festival, I'm sure there are 21-25 aged gems. Why so picky?
