We usually were against something but she wanted to dance to that set. I told her the Sahara is usually a mess but she still wanted to go. I went down there with her just in case she was overwhelmed by everything and I'm glad I did.

Fair enough. Would it be over the line to ask if her condition makes her dancing worse or--strangely--better?

I still have faith that those "real" music fans are still out there because Neutral Milk Hotel's show in Austin was full of die-hards singing every word. Honestly though, I LIKE this about Coachella - while the bro and flower-headband chicks might annoy me occasionally, it's a huge win in my book to have tons of breathing room for shows like those and push the majority of the festival capacity to a dance tent I have no interest in. It's far more enjoyable than dealing with all 75,000 people at ACL Festival trying to get a good spot for the same artists.
My only concern, though, is that this is the future of Coachella. It seems like they would sell this place out if Calvin, Lana and Lorde were the headliners and no artist was allowed in with a guitar. Clearly, the way for this festival to make money NOW is to lean toward more of these acts. The danger, though, is that when the EDM stuff becomes passe like every other sub-genre, the festival will die with it. So, my hope is that they booking acts like NMH, the Knife, Arcade Fire, the Replacements, et al., which is their heart and soul and which, I think, will allow the festival to survive when the kids start listening to other stuff.
I have been to concerts. I will go to concerts in the future.

Both of you get the fuck out of here with that shit. You're not fans of OutKast, we get it. That doesn't mean the crowd was weak as shit during that set.

Very true. I tried keeping the documenting to a minimum this year and i feel i had a much better time enjoying each set.

I was late for Neutral Milk Hotel getting drunk at my camp knowing for sure that i fucked up thinking it was going to be crowded as shit and i was going to have to be all the way in the back. Got as close as the soundboard without having to push a single person. Weird. But then after having random conversations at Coachella a most people not knowing who neutral milk hotel was, i didn't feel so surprised anymore.

Saddest shit of the weekend. Coachella is starting to turn into a party, drug, bro, rave more than a music festival. I can't help but sense that thats why most people are going to Coachella now days. Nothing wrong with the drugs or other shit like that but people are just going regardless of the lineup now as long as you got those cheese acts in big letters on the poster. Solve the problem by getting rid of the cheese.

Haha it makes it better. Maybe because she doesn't care about making an ass of herself anymore.

It should also be pointed out that both Roxy Music and Neutral Milk Hotel (a) were never that popular and (b) suck shit.

I mean, the festival sells out as it is. Why would they have to change anything?

I don't think you're saying a more electro-centric lineup would be "better" so I'm not sure what your point is.

Was going to start a new thread but this seems fitting. This year was Clusterfuckchella all over again. 7th year going and definitely the most crowded it's ever been. Even more than 2010. The crowds were ridiculous. The terrace was exactly what I pictured it would be which is a clusterfuck dead end with Yuma tent blaring so loud you couldn't hear anything in the area. Craft beer garden was cool minus Yuma being there and being in the terrace away from everything else. Talked to a vendor who said they sold some 15k more tix this year. Also the Sahara keeps getting bigger and that whole area is packed all the way to the beer garden. Do lab wasn't the same. Overall enjoyed myself but the EDM has really brought the average age down to 16 year olds and ravers. Why can't we have coachella rock and roll weekend with some hip hop week 1 coachella EDM week 2 and stagecoach week 3.

That doesn't make it the least bit true. No way were there 15K more people this year.

Weren't they? I feel like this was a huge issue all weekend. Is weekend 1 just for spoiled rich Cali kids that just go to be seen there? Like why the fuck would you push your way up through a crowd through thousands of people to get to the front only to not give a fuck about any of the show? Is it just being able to say 'chyeaaaa dude we were so close for Arcade Fire'? FOR REAL what was the deal? I've never seen such empathy for such huge shows. Outkast, Neutral Milk, the Knife... Three bands that rarely ever play live shows, and are always highly requested in fantasy lineups, all playing historic Coachella sets on the same weekend and it just felt like nobody gave a fuck! Even after getting called out for being a dull audience at Outkast, and so many artists saying things like, "you guys tired?" And, "y'all still there?" And "I know it's been a long day but let me see ANYTHING from you out there."
I just felt so bad for so many artists. Lots of performers commented on it this year and I was pretty embarrassed to be in the company of the crowds I was in. And Win's comment like, "There's a lot of backstage extreme VIP bullshit going on at this festival and a lot of you probably wish you could be back here but you're really not missing anything". I loved that. It had a weird vibe to it this weekend and I'm glad he addressed it. I could go on and on about the shitty crowds but you all witnessed it. I just hope weekend 2 crowd picks up our slack and fucking kills it for all the bands!
Maybe you just saw shitty shows. I didn't see this issue at most of the shows I was at. People were subdued and quiet at the lower key shows and having a fucking blast at the high energy shows, for the most part.

Also, the word you were looking for is apathy, not empathy.

    Sahara didn't seem bigger

    Yuma seemed louder last year

Do lab should have been in that spot years ago
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

    This thread sucks.

I thought the crowd was much better this year than others. A dull crowd is usually due to the performer's lack of energizing them, regardless if it is a well-known song or not.

There were plenty of options besides the "cheese" acts. Thats like complaining about the dish you've never had/will never have at a restaurant.

This horseshit about "if the artist looks bored on stage, it's the crowd's fault" is like a whole new level of retardation. Like, Jenny McCarthy after suffering major head trauma levels of stupid.

First of all, I went to many sets this weekend where I only knew one or two songs by the band, and you know what? If the band goes out there and gives it 100%, it doesn't matter whether I know the song, I still end up having a kick ass time. Second, bands, especially huge headliners like Outkast, are getting paid a shit load of money to put on a show. It is not the crowd's responsibility to earn Outkast's paycheck for them. Half-assing your set because you aren't feeling the crowd is fucking amateur hour. Muse played on the worst weather day of the weekend, dust blowing all up in their faces, wind fucking up their sound for anyone who wasn't positioned just right, and on top of that, their lead singer is getting over laryngitis. They still went out there and put on a fucking dynamite show. That is how professional performers behave. Get the fuck out with this "if Outkast seemed bored it was because of the crowd" bullshit. It's their job to energize the crowd, not the other way around.

I have bitched, at some length, about the crowds last year and 2010. I guess I came in expecting the worst this year. I had a few isolated moments but nothing to really write about.

The VIP area hasn't really changed at all over the last many, many years. Still the same size, still the same lame people. I didn't see anything in there about the guests of bands and promoters who are a level above VIP in terms of access. They are such a small portion of the overall amount of tickets sold. With people already bitching about pass prices, let the VIPs pay that stupid amount which helps subsidize the cost of the ga passes.

I really really don't think Win Butler was referring to general VIP. I am almost certain he was referring to the douchey celebrities and celebrity artists at Coachella.

Did they have the front stage VIP section when AF headlined in 2011 or subbed in 2007?

VIP numbers are known to the public and go up every years. I think it's gone up from 9,000 to 11,000 in recent years.

i don't know if im right, but judging from everyone's obligatory status updates and what i saw on the stream, coachella really seemed weak. i was considering weekend 2 but i don't know if i should be giving a fuck.

i was only going to really go for outkast, bonobo, flume, and shlohmo...and ive already seen the last 2. now that outkast is playing pretty much every festival, i dont think i would be missing out on too much

I respect the heck out of this. Friday was a weird day. Outkast was so lackluster it didn't even feel like it was Coachella. Saturday and Sunday had amazing sets and great crowds. I felt total energy at every set I was at on those days.

I don't quite agree with the Week 1 people vs. Week 2 comments. Yes, there are more celebs and "who's who" the first weekend - but there is no way to gauge what normal people get tickets to what weekend. It's completely random and will change every year. There will be bad apples both weekends, I assure you. IMHO, this year was much more crowded than 2010. Huge crowds in VIP, backstage, everywhere. The only solution is to sell less tickets for a more enjoyable, authentic experience like it used to be.
