Bands like Daft Punk and M83 have set the standard for Coachella performers recording amazing soundtracks. Can you think of any other artists who have done soundtracks and are also performing at Coachella, for additional info and reference to this discussion check out my blog on the subject and reply in the comments.
So many people do not immediately associate music and music festivals with television, but that is a huge mistake. Movies like The Matrix, Tron Legacy, and Oblivion have proved that an amazing band recording a soundtrack for an epic movie can always be a huge cinematic success. Even if the "academy" does not recognize these films that makes them no less valuable, or major achievements in film-making or cinematography.
Let us begin with Tron: Legacy. It starts right off the bat with a solid soundtrack. Daft Punk is one of the all time greats. Right off the bat Kevin Flynn's son (see original Tron, if you have not do yourself a favor and go buy it right this second...) shows his antagony and disdain towards the new Encom after his father's unfortunate and untimely departure. He re-enters the "game" and all so real world of the grid and immediately has to partake in disk battles, followed by an intense new age version of light cycles. The light cycle battle, and disc battles for that matter, are brilliantly accompanied by the styling’s of Daft Punk. Then it comes down to the inclusion of the original Kevin Flynn (again see original Tron) in business with Quorra, the ISO, and Sam Flynn's now coming to terms with the fact that his father has been imprisoned in a computer. This is where the soundtrack really explodes. Sam visits a club run by Caster/Zeus, who helps troubled programs and also double-deals, BUT his club DJ's are a great cameo by the ACTUAL Daft Punk.
Now I don't want to be the a$$hole who claims something that will never happen, but this year Pharrell is performing at Coachella. Just a few months ago Pharrell and Daft Punk won the GRAMMY for best song for "Get Lucky." On top of that Daft Punk won best album for "Random Access Memories." I know I am not the first, nor will I be the last, to SPECULATE that Daft Punk will be making an appearance this year during Coachella Weekend #1. Considering Random Access Memories is one of the highest grossing and most popular albums of the past 5-10 years it would be a shame and a huge missed opportunity for Daft Punk not to show up... Pharell is headlining this year, and although his own album was a success will the crowds of Coachella show up to his show simply for his performance, NO, everyone that is there will be hoping for a huge cameo surprise. It may not be Daft Punk, but again fingers crossed, but I can honestly give my personal guarantee Pharell will not be performing alone.
The Matrix speaks for itself... The technlogical advances and fresh filming formats, aka "bullet time," define the action genre of the past 15 years and is no small part due to the incredible soundtrack. As the best band to ever grace the sound stage for a Hollywood motion picture, Rage Against the Machine set the standard for all soundtracks. The brought the futuristic, but also surprisingly archaic world of the Matrix into real life via out immaginations. A movie can be the most perfectly written, well-directed masterpiece, but would fall flat without the benefit and reward of an amazing soundtrack.
Last year M83 was a relatively unknown performer at Coachella, but anyone lucky and fortunate enough to witness their set had nothing but amazing reviews as well as complete and utter satisfaction. They were the newest and freshest name in the classic techno genre and The director, Kosinski, chose to replace Daft Punk as his recording artist for the Oblivion soundtrack. They far exceeded the standard set by Daft Punk just one year before and then more than defended that title at Coachella 2013.
Not only does Cochella have many surprise returns to the stage like AFI, and Motorhead, there is a huge possibility and likeliehood that Daft Punk will make an appearance. Not only is Pharrell a headliner, but two other artists Daft Punk have recorded with are also on the lineup. All I'm saying is don't be surprised if the OG techno robots visit this year!!! .
