    Default ICE ICE ICE

-I would have posted this in camping but that thread has been taken over by sellers/buyers. I figured past experiences might be fitting for this topic-

I went to Firefly last year as my first multi day fest - we ran out of ice pretty quickly (newbs) and Firefly themselves ran out of ice to sell pretty quickly (newbs). This year I want to be fully prepared for the ice situation at coachella. I have a few questions I'd appreciate answers to:

    1. Do they sell ice at coachella? Expensive? Are they known to run out? (I'm 110% sure coachella is much more prepared than firefly, but it doesn't hurt to ask because it would suck to rely on buying ice there and they run out by Saturday morning)

    2. Anybody ever used dry ice to keep an ice cooler cold? My coworkers are advising against this option because apparently it doesn't last long and they think it will get wet and cause serious problems.

    3. Anybody have any good suggestions on how to come stocked with ice and it last throughout the weekend?

Thanks in advance! See ya soon!

    1. Yes they sell ice. It's 10 bucks a bag. I've never seen them run out.
    2. Yes people have used dried ice. Use search to find the threads about using dry ice.
    3. Your ice won't last all weekend, unless the weather is like 2012 Weekend 1, which it probably won't be.

They bring ice trucks in every day, so they haven't run out in the last 5 years I've been going.

Just get dry ice. Two blocks in your cooler (wrap them in newspaper) should last the whole weekend.

If they do run out, they should have it re-stocked within a few hours. This happened to us 2012 W2 when it was ungodly hot.

I tried this last year and it didn't go very well. Do you only use dry ice in the cooler, no normal ice? I had a block of dry at the bottom, a layer of newspaper, and then normal ice. Everything completely froze together (all the pieces of normal ice fused into one big slab) and the newspaperstuck to the insides of my cooler and it was just a hassle. Any tips for not screwing this up?

We might be trying to do dry-ice this year, so....same question.

Ours lasted until at least late Sunday. By that point, we have already devoured our perishables. I will have to try the cardboard option this year. With newspaper, it was a little messy, but it's not like it was pulp or anything by the time we cleaned it out.

Also remember, anything at that is closest to the dry ice will get the shit frozen out of it, so be careful.

Thanks for the help Davers. How about trying to help next time instead of being a douche. Obviously I don't fully get it or I wouldn't need to make this thread. And fwiw, I know dry ice doesn't melt and become wet, I'm not a moron. I'm talking about the condensation from the regular ice.

Tyles, you seem to know what's up. A couple of follow up questions:

    1. How many pounds is a "block of dry ice?"

    2. Empty water battles or bottles of water above the towel/cardboard?

    3. Not sure if I was clear enough originally, but we want to have a cooler just for ice and put the dry ice in there to keep the ice frozen throughout the weekend. You think your dry ice plan will work for that?

^if you're doing that you might want to use dry ice along with block ice otherwise all your ice will freeze together. Bring an ice pick.

    1. I cannot recall the exact weight of each block. At Ralphs, they sell them in blocks, so two of those blocks worked for us for the weekend.

    2. Bottles of water. Nothing like a frozen bottle of water and then that can help with keeping other portions of your cooler cold, or you can just take them out as they freeze and drink them once the ice inside has melted to a sufficient level. Options!

    3. Not quite sure. Since it's just my girlfriend and myself, we only ever needed the dry ice to keep our foods and some beers cold. I really don't drink during the actual concert days, so if you want to keep your beer optimally cold the entire time you are there, dry ice with some additional ice might help, so long as you are not using the ice to put into any drinks.

This thread has been a huge help. Thanks for the info everyone. Gonna try dry ice for first time this year as well. There's a spot by me in Fullerton CA that sells dry ice super cheap, also they sell Ice Cream wholesale... so there is that.

heres their info if you are in the OC/LA area and need a place to stop: http://www.yelp.com/biz/deelite-distribution-fullerton

If you do buy ice at the campgrounds, bring a towel to the vendor so that you won't get freezer burn carrying it back to your site. It hurts to watch guys try and carry the bags across their bare forearms.

On the contrary I quite enjoy that part. Usually throw it over both shoulders and cool off a bit.

I've tried dry ice before and didn't have much luck with it but appears I may have going about it wrong. Another good tip is to freeze a crate of water bottles and use that to refrigerate the cooler that you keep your food in. You'll have ice-cold water for the whole fest and your food will be refrigerated without getting wet.

Here is a helpful tip: Your plan is crazy.

You want to bring an extra cooler, fill it with dry ice AND normal ice, and move said normal ice out of the dry ice cooler into the food and drink cooler as needed. Is that right?

Ice in the campground is not THAT expensive. $10 for a pretty huge bag. Last year I only had to buy 2 bags all weekend.

Bring a lot of ice to start, freeze water bottles, and if you have the cooler space, (which it sounds like you will) bring a block of ice. That block of ice will last a long time. You will probably only need one, maybe two bags of ice all weekend.

Other common sense tips: Keep your cooler in the shade during the day. Keep it tightly closed. Have food in a separate cooler from drinks.

That makes sense, since normal ice will probably not keep those things frozen.

Using dry ice to keep regular ice cold for later use makes very little sense. It might work, but that is a huge amount of effort to save maybe $10.

Friendly tip(s) on the dry ice as well. I used it last year and it worked out pretty well.

    1. I got a cooler like the one linked above and got about 2lbs of the stuff. That probably wasn't quite enough because it melted by Sunday. Get a little more than that.

    2. Be very stingy about opening that particular cooler. The more you open it, the quicker the ice will melt. I didn't do a good job of this.

    3. Be aware that any food you put in there will get nitrogen infused and have a distinctive flavor/feel to it that isn't quite natural. I did this with some tangerines and it made them "fizzy". Worked out well for those, but I figure a piece of meat won't be so good that way. Same goes for carbonated drinks from what I hear. It ruins them. I figure ice cream and popsicles will be ok though.

    4. Don't touch it with your bare hands if you didn't already know that. I also second the cardboard suggestion. I bought some at Ralphs on the way and threw it in the cooler with the cardboard. The ice was wrapped in a plastic bag already so I didn't need to worry about any newspaper. Your mileage may vary.
