I liked the finale a lot. Definitely made for some fevered dreams. As others have already mentioned, I think Episode 5 was such a tour de force that a lot of fans and critics lost sight of what the series claimed to be from the very beginning: a classically structured, 3 act story with "a (one) monster at the end." The final scene in Carcosa owes just as much to Beowulf as it does to any police procedural; that was mythic storytelling at its finest. Any disappointment I might have felt about a conventional conclusion was tempered by how unbelievably tense that final scene was. Wasn't a huge fan of how the lawnmower man was portrayed in the opening scene but he was appropriately monstrous at the end. Initially I was thrilled with the 8 episode format but I think we can all agree this series could have used another couple episodes. I hope Pizzolato still has some tricks up his sleeve for next season.

Side note: the head-butt is the most devastating weapon in any streetfighter's arsenal.

The only thing disappointing is that it didn't end with a Cohle/Hart mid-jump high five freeze frame.

Interesting thoughts from a random article commenter.

so it seems there's a bunch of people who have approached this show as a whodunnit from the beginning. That's totally fine, and frankly expected. Most of modern fiction and definitely modern television has groomed audiences with the addicting satisfaction of the whodunnit. For those of us who have read the works of H.P Lovecraft and other similar off-beat writers across a range of media recognize a lot of what we love in True Detective. The Yellow King is a "character" that has been passed down and built on by many authors, essentially it is a monstrous cosmic god that exists in the same pantheon as other beings of the Cthulhu Mythos (those unfamiliar look it up). Someone put it really well when they described the Louisiana cult as remnants of a far more nefarious organization, so the killer is essentially an inbred distilment of what the cult once was, however he plays against type as shown by his eccentric display at his house, he's the broken sad end of a once horrific institution, but theres still a fire behind that flabby surface. You can see that fire in the ruins of "Carcossa" and experience his true form as the disembodied voice of the last embers of the cult. Something strange that most people have not talked much about, is the "hallucination" Rust has before getting attacked. The sculpture with the tattered yellow robes and skulls is an avatar of the Yellow King, an effigy. That cosmic spinning maw coming from the infinite reaches of a deep dark space is the Yellow King itself, something elemental, old, and infinitely evil. It is a being that comes from the darkness that Marty mentions at the end, the dark that was before us and seems to be all around us. Rust being close to the madness can see beyond the wall of sanity, and in that instance perceives the cosmic deity. It is this entity and others like it that he refers to in his nearly deranged monologue to the detectives of those who exist outside of time and see it as a flat circle. This isn't why the show is as wonderful as it is, but it's certainly a great layer. For those skeptical, there's a reason why no one googled what the "Yellow King" was in the show. Two detectives would follow up such an important lead and find all the mythology surrounding it, from that you can draw the conclusion that Rust, Marty, and their world exist in the same space as the Mythos, and specifically, that of the Yellow King, who is also known as Hastur the Unspeakable, connected to Carcossa, and the lake Hali. It is Rust coming face to face with the deep dark and his near death that allows him to perceive something beyond the oldest darkness, something underlying it and existing completely beyond and within it, the all encompassing, deeply moving, warmth of Love.

Ha, I bet. As someone who didn't follow the mythology but endured several "omg can't wait to find out who the yellow king is!" fb posts over the past few weeks it makes sense and is satisfying to me if he wasn't a literal figure.

But he was a literal character. When that prisoner is trying to strike a deal with Rust and says that he'll "tell [him] about the Yellow King," he's not offering analysis on 19th century literature in exchange for immunity. He's referring to Childress, a man that he met, who referred to himself as the Yellow King.

    ^ Totally.

Here's hoping the new season is set in Humboldt or somewhere else in the far North of California and not somewhere like the Salton Sea.

Don't worry, it'll be in the first episode...

It's supposedly going to be a manhunt with the detectives tracking down the culprit and will take place somewhere in SoCal.

I really hope Vince Vaughn isn't in it. I've never seen that guy disappear into a character. Good or bad he's always Vince Vaughn. Moss is definitely the most intriguing rumor, but I could easily see Farrell or Kitsch elevating their game if the material is as strong as the first season.

Top of the Lake is pretty great.

I thought Vince Vaughn did a good job as Norman Bates in Psycho and I think all he needs to do is toughen up the character he played in, Be Cool, and will be well and good, ya feel me?

Watched this in a couple day marathon. I was underwhelmed because of the non-criminal aspects of the story. I loved the leads, and I loved the finale, but there was just too much in the middle for me that I didn't respond to. Looking forward to the next season, though.

I feel kinda bad for Vaughn and Farrell. I think no matter how good they are this season they are going to be unjustly criticized for not living up to Season 1 standards. I believe in them as actors and can really see them hitting it out of the park as long as the writing is just as good as Season 1. I'm already seeing backlash which I guess it what makes the internet a cold, sad place.

    Casting confirmations:

Rachel McAdams as Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves.

Taylor Kitsch as Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol, running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened.

Kelly Reilly as Jordan, Frank Semyon’s wife, a former D-list actress who is a full partner in his enterprises and ambitions.
