I would love the Black Stage and have been trying to see Gary Numan for years.

Probably will opt out of this though - with Voodoo the week before and ACL just a few weeks.... Ugh. Here's to hoping Voodoo picks up DFA 1979, Numan, etc. Three fests in one month is overkill!

I'm torn between this and FYF, both lineups are terrific to me and I'm itching for one more festival out of town. What to do, what to do...

Is the comedy lineup usually good? And I'm guessing that is one of the other stages they have on their site, the green or orange stage... so what's the other one?

Who knew that Black Lips, Girl Talk, and even Netural Hotel Milk could be in a original line up for a festival this year.

Comedy is the yellow stage. It's in a tent that's not very big so it can be frustrating to try and get into when the big acts play. They usually get some pretty big comedy names to play. Last year the biggest names in there were Tenacious D and Patton Oswalt.

Every year I have been jealous that I have not been able to do FFF. I was thinking I might actually go this year, but this lineup seriously underwhelms me. I love the bands on the Orange Stage, but have seen most of them many times. In years past, it has been the Black and blue stage lineups that make this fest so different than all of the others, and I am not really feeling it on those stages. Intellectually, I understand that they got some nice, respected, highly-anticipated bands, but the these particular bands do not appeal to my particular tastes, compared to past years. The Riot Fests are looking far more appealing to me, but fall on weekends that I can't pull off.

This lineup is full of acts I know nothing about, the black stage in particular. But were I to go, Nas, Gary Numan, The Presets, Z-Trip, Run the Jewels, NMH, Dinosaur Jr, First Aid Kit, The New Pornagraphers, Courtney Barnett, Sun Kil Moon, Yann Tiersen, Angel Olsen, Chelsea Wolfe, Spider Bags, Juliana Barwick, J. Masics, and mother fucking GINUWINE are all acts I'd want to catch, and that's before doing research. And it's nice, to know the stages everything is on, because in particular if you're excited about one stage you run no risk of conflicts.

Could definitely be tempted to trek out to Austin again this year. FYF looks great but August in LA does not seem appealing--this line up is certainly great. How many tickets are sold for this? I saw earlier a poster said it was easy to navigate, so that is a real plus too.

Very true regarding Numan specifically. I know he played multiple dates in the NE.

Pretty sure no one is touting Gary Numan as some sort of incredible, amazing, oh my god I can't believe it happened he never tours I'm going to travel cross country to see him get. He's just nice to see on the lineup. He'd be a welcome addition to any festival, really.

As polarizing as he is, King Diamond is the really rare holy fuck booking. That dude never plays the US. Also, Judas Priest. I thought they had retired a couple years back

Also, judging by the numerous threads about him, seems like Gary Numan is high on several Coachella wishlists. But now that he's playing FFF it's a "meh" booking. Strange.

I think part of the problem too with lineup announcements now is that the festival landscape seems very homogenized to a lot of people. It was bound to happen, new industry model, only so many acts to go around/available to tour in any given year etc. If there are thirty festivals to a season, chances are you’re going to see a whole lot of the same bands playing them. I’m sure that this isn’t anything that this board doesn’t already know, but because of that, I just wanted to say big props to FFF for at least trying to always make it interesting. This lineup played out over three days seems really compelling to me, a bit more so than most I see. Can’t wait for set times.

People will complain about homogenization and then in the same breath complain that their favorite band isn't there. I'm looking at you zack.

Yeah, and the "he played a town near you" line is laughable. I was out of town when Numan rolled through the town near me. I was at Coachella when he got Volcano'd out, though, and would love to see him on a poster instead of some spare indie band/dj/rapper I have zero interest in.

This fest definitely has the most consistently interesting booking of most other festivals of its size (and even compared to bigger ones).

King Diamond is an example of a band I intellectually appreciate being booked, but have no actual interest in hearing (not out of lack of knowledge - he plays a style of heavy music I simply don't care for). That being said, I don't know how big of a get it was for him, as he can drive down to Austin and back to his house in suburban Dallas pretty easily.

Well King Diamond hasn't done a show in the US since 2005 so it's a pretty big booking.

"first scheduled North American appearance since 2005"

    "full european festival production"

I mean I agree with you Jeff, he's not my cup of tea, but to claim it's not a big get is a stretch.

I feel like festivals fall into a few main categories these days. You have the big festivals like Coachella, Lolla, Bonnaroo, etc. that book the same headliners and the same big name cheese djs, plus every indie buzz band that you can think of. Then you have smaller fests that book all of those indie buzz bands but put them on a higher position on the poster and then they throw in a reunion of some band that broke up X number of years ago and they proceed to play every festival imaginable. And of course you have the really small niche festivals that cater to one or two specific genres. That's why I like FFF's lineup so much. They actually strive to not try and make their festival identical to the thousand other festivals of similar size.
