Thread: It's raining the Gibson Ampitheatre

Default It's raining the Gibson Ampitheatre

...to make way for Harry Potter?

It’s been rumored for some time and even today Time Warner boss Jeff Bewkes said the news was coming soon. Now Comcast’s Universal Parks & Resorts has confirmed that it will build a Harry Potter attraction inside its Universal Studios Hollywood theme park, as well as expand its uber-profitable The Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction at its Orlando resort. It’s there that the year-plus-old Potter-themed attraction has helped boost revenue by 33% through the first nine months of 2011, and attendance is up 50% since Wizarding’s June 2010 launch, making the move to other parks a no-brainer. (Yesterday, Comcast CFO Mike Angelakis called the attraction at Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure “a reset mechanism” for the park.) “It was a game changer for us and frankly for Orlando,” Universal Studios president Ron Meyer told the Associated Press after today’s announcement. “The expansion in Orlando will make it that much more of a must-see, and we’ll have the same experience here.” The new installation is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs. Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky told the AP that he was told Universal’s concert venue Gibson Amphitheatre would be axed to make way for the Potter attraction. No plan details or time frames were discussed. Harry Potter is a Warner Bros property.

So no more unnecessarily high priced concerts? Oh no!
    4/27 - Ghost BC - Fonda (?)
    4/29 - Franz Ferdinand - Wiltern (?)
    4/30 - Mono - Troubadour (?)
    5/03 - Philip Glass - Royce Hall
    5/06 - Rodrigo y Gabriela - Orpheum (?)

LN won't be happy with this. gonna have to get a new mid-sized indoor venue or this hurts them A LOT.

Too bad, had some memorable shows at this place... kroq acoustic xmas '93, nin's downward spiral tour, Tool's Ænima tour, Beck's sea change tour w/ the Flips, Pearl Jam's 4 shows they played couple of years ago. Nokia theater will benefit from the this news tremendously.

The first time I saw Radiohead was at this dump, I'm a little sad to see it go.

Manson Holywood Tour front row, Godhead opened... This was when i was a junior in high school. I remember the interlude music being the Beatles, the goths were confused.

Such a great front row venue... I saw Gorillaz and Kenny G/Michael Boltom (Vday!) there also within the last year. Can't complain, all great shows. Just hated how expensive and lame parking was (fuck citywalk)

And Brokendreams: you lucky bastard. Downward Spiral tour ><

I saw Pinkerton one of my favorite albums and my morning jacket play here and my first acoustic christmas this Saturday. It wasn't the best venue but I liked it. I just wish it was easier to get tickets...

I've been going to Universal Amp since I was a kid...one of my favorite early memories there was seeing the Broadway production of Tommy there when I was probably 11.

What's even a suitable replacement for this, though? Nokia Theatre? That place blows.

I mean, so does the Gibson — but it was unique in the sense that it initially opened as an outdoor ampitheatre (like Verizon Ampitheatre) and was then made an indoor venue because of the noise complaints later on. It still had that feel of an outdoor venue.

Also, I went on a field trip there in college and got to see the entire place empty. That was pretty rad.

it's very unique in LA in that it's a small, full half-dome amphitheater. There's nothing comparable to it.

Did you go see Gaga at Nokia theatre and just hate that it was not so hipsterish as Gibson?

either LN puts money into building a new venue, or theyre pretty much screwed now with booking acts in a venue thats not an arena or amp size draw. I wonder if they try to buy out Nederlander so they have the Greek.

even if they do, they're pretty much screwed when it's not summertime...

they are at the point now where they've gotta build their own to compete with Nokia...

It wasn't the best, nor was it bad. I'll miss that place. Glad I got to catch one last show there with My Morning Jacket. They could at least put something cool in as its replacement... Harry Potter?? I'd rather just ride Jurassic Park a couple of extra times instead.

Seriously, so glad I don't have to go to Florida now.

I also had NO idea Universal Amp used to be outdoors. But that makes total sense now that you say it. I've had almost no good show memories there growing up. I almost exclusively associate it with Acoustic Xmas.
