For the first time in 10 years.
Let's talk about him in the Line Up/Artists section of the board.
I keep on forgetting he's playing, and then I'm reminded and I get incredibly stoked. NMH-->Beck-->Arcade Fire will be a thingies beauty.
Will his new album be out before April?
4/17 Pixies @ Pappy & Harriets
4/26 Desert Daze @ Sunset Ranch Oasis
5/26 Panda Bear @ Pappy & Harriets
7/11 Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds @ The Shrine Auditorium
is this the first time a headliner has been demoted?
i think it is.
Well Coachella was significantly smaller in 1999 than it is today.
The only acceptable performance by Beck is Midnight Vultures from start to finish in the Sahara.
Sigh...in reality he will likely play a lot of his new album which I hear sounds closer to Sea Change than than anything else. I hear he is halfway done with the next one after that as well so i'm guessing some interesting new material will be heard.
I enjoyed his Sasquatch set a couple years ago but he did seem to phone it in a little.
His Outside Lands set in 2012 was forgettable. I stand by my finding that his shows took a turn for the worse when he started adding stage production. I know a lot of people loved the Information tour in 2006 but that was the beginning of the end for me. The whole puppets and stomp routine was alright but I simply prefer his random stream of conscious antics. I've seen him 4 times since then and they all felt phoned in.
I'm old and I remember Beck as this goofy, spontaneous guy on stage who would just do random fun shit constantly. Midnight Vultures tour was the peak. Dancing, running around, grabbing a bunch of mic stands and doing his best jack tripper. He was funky and the shows were a party. Somewhere along the way he forgot how to do all that. I haven't loved a Beck album since Sea Change. All that said, maybe a sunset outdoor set would work out well?
I saw his set at Life Is Beautiful in vegas and I loved it. He seemed like he was having a great time. Hoping for more at Coachella!

I would love to see him perform "Truckdrivin Neighbors Downstairs (Yellow Sweat)," but I highly doubt that's on his to-do list.
Basically, any and all material up to Sea Change would be nice.
Saw him at Outside Lands 2012 and it wasn't anything spectacular. He was better at Life is Beautiful though.
from my understanding he had a pretty serious back/spinal injury that stopped him from performing with his old antics. Not sure if it happend around 2006 or more recent though
" Do not think I can move again as before, although I can give a lot onstage." The newspaper published the interview in Spanish, and website The Future Heart translated it into English.
It's at least promising to hear his Life is Beautiful set was worthwhile. I'll likely be there no matter what. I've seen him on every tour since Mellow Gold so seeing him on the polo fields feels necessary. I would much rather he play the Outdoor at sunset than subheadline the main stage. The Outdoor sunset shows tend to at least feel a bit special.
I did just read about the back injury, maybe that did have something to do with it. I assumed the injury was more recent but maybe it was going on for a bit and finally went through with a surgery. Anyway, I hope for a good set.
Saw him recently at Treasure Island and it he was terrific. He did a duet with the singer from sleigh bells that was forgettable but beyond that it was a blast. He was much more subdued and had a more bluesy vibe, definitely made use of the harmonica on a few segways. He closed out with a long encore of debra, midnight flight to bankok. If that set was any indication I'd say expect a tamer mature beck and you're in for a good time.

Coachella '13 , '14
Never seen a bad performance from him
2 oz blended whiskey
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1/2 tsp powdered sugar
1/2 slice lemon
Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.
The tent was less than 1/2 of the size of the current Mojave tent and it was beyond packed. I remember a steady flow of heat-exhausted bodies being crowd-surfed to safety. If I remember correctly the set was all acoustic, but I was pretty far out and it was difficult to hear let alone see. I'm looking forward to seeing Beck again at Coachella on a stage proportional in size to his fan base.

Sounds like we're on the same page. Sure it would have been great to see a 90's Beck losing his mind on stage, but hey take it for what it is. My only complaint was he was a good 30 min late, he made it up and went over but that won't fly at coachella.
Beck was undoubtedly the first headliner to be demoted, when he played the Gobi midday in 2004. He was goofy and light-hearted and played a fantastic set:
it's been a long time since i've seen him. really looking forward to it
