I feel like I was the only one who thought this was one of the most magical sets of the weekend. I was pretty close up on the left, which seemed to be a perfect spot. I personally adored their set and would probably go see them again on their own.

Granted this was my first time seeing them and I was only able to catch a little bit of Mangum back in 2012

they are #2 on the TomAz Top 10 Coachella 2014 List, just after the Replacements.

You are not alone, it was one of my favorite sets of the weekend by far.

I also thought it was fucking amazing.

Got stampeded by Lana fans afterwards though.

    Anybody have the setlist?

I did see Mangum in 2012 too and maybe that spoiled it a bit. I did think that they played excellently and in no way was it a bad set. Perhaps I was expecting something grander. I think my spot had a lot to do with it since I wasn't front and center with more excited friends fans. There was this air of disinterest with my surroundings. Hope I can catch a solo show on day or at least FYF.

Very similar to this setlist, with some of the Avery island songs cut if i remember correctly = http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/neutra...-3bc3a02c.html

Definitely was the same last 4.

I thought the show in Austin was better - none of the sound issues that were apparent at Coachella, Jeff seemed more emotionally involved, more people singing along, and it was honestly one of the best shows I've ever seen.

That being said, there's really nothing like laying in the grass and listening to the beautiful sounds of Neutral Milk Hotel live as the sun sets in the distance...

7/30 Tori Amos, 8/1 Ray LaMontagne, 8/5 Justin Timberlake, 8/14 Nine Inch Nails + Soundgarden, 8/22 Aerosmith + Slash, 8/28 Bear in Heaven, 8/31 Little Dragon, 9/11 Delta Spirit, 9/20 Conor Oberst, 9/25 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, 9/28 The War on Drugs, 10/3-10/5 ACL W1, 10/13 Paul McCartney, 10/18 twenty one pilots, 10/19 Erasure, 11/7 Rufus Wainwright, 11/7-11/9 FFF Fest, 11/23 Caribou, 12/14 Fleetwood Mac, 12/19 The Black Keys + St. Vincent

Definitely one of the best sets of the weekend. I was up pretty close and in the center along the yellow brick road surrounded by Neutral Milk Hotel fans so that might have had something to do with it.

The band was great, however I was bummed by the sound issues. The mix was incredibly muddy and whenever they broke out the fast/ loud songs, they lacked any punch. I saw them in Vancouver a week ago and the songs sounded big, loud, confident, and rocking. Still a very enjoyable set, but the sound issues were certainly a bummer.

I really wanted to break that "No Photography/Recording" rule because of how beautiful that set was, but I decided to respect it and now I'm kinda regretting I did. At least one picture.... DAMN.

I took a couple photos of Jeff Mangum in 2012 because I wandered in after he started and wasn't informed of the no photos request. My sheer guilt from that incident is going to keep my camera in my pockets during this set next weekend.

Its kind of a great idea not to have 50% of the crowd holding up camera's the entire show

I believe GV is not allowed to record the shows for their archive. Fan videos are the only proof it happened and his sets can't be used in any future film.

Reminds me a Lolla showing a short video history of all their headliners and for Tool there was only a blurry fan photo of Maynard.

Right there with you, Josh (I guess literally, we were standing next to each other). The band played fine, but the sound put a sour note on the set for me. The issues weren't very apparent during the slower songs, just during the fast/loud songs as you said. I thought the wind may have been a contributing factor, as it wasn't just muddy but the sound seemed to go loud to soft from second to second. But I'm not really sure.

One thing about watching a set with Tom, who was to my right during Neutral Milk Hotel, is that I can rarely tell just how much he's enjoying a set. Unless he's dancing around during Courtney Barnett.

Yep, agreed. I thought it had to do with the wind, as Tommy mentioned, and also because I was further to the side so I felt maybe it was my placement at the stage, too.

Still, it was a very good set. When they played "In the Areoplane Over the Sea" I got super emotional. Thinking about where we were, how the weekend was almost over, and reflecting on our fellow boardie's death got me really worked up.

I was happy that most of the people around us seemed to comply with the no camera policy, I loved that everyone around me was respectful and quiet during the set, and that the fellow fans felt like a family throughout it. When it was over, I couldn't help but feel like I went through some therapy session and came out great on the other side. I was beaming and still somewhat reflecting on my feelings. Then my boyfriend, who really knows nothing about NMH turned to me and said, "Well, that was better than I expected. I didn't know the lead singer was going to look like a bum, though" and reflection time was over!

no set has stuck with me this week as much as NMH's. It feels like I got to another level of understanding of their music after that. I mean, I have always admired them (well, at least once i was introduced to them, which was rather late to the game), but now I finally get why people get so worked up over them. Shit's genius.

Yeah it really is genius, on all levels. That’s why it is so rare.

I hope all the people I told to go to that show went to it. Doubtful though.

I had a good spot which was nice. Saw them in Oakland 2 days before and was harder to see.

Going from NMH to Calvin harris was one of the weirdest transitions I have been through. I went from this magically crafted NMH land to rave zombie hell it was intense to say the least. Dont blast me for going to calvin it was a comprimise I made.
    you are soooooooo good lookin
