The final year of Lackey's contract is a club option for $500,000? Wow, he should never stop firing his agent.

Has any team in MLB gone worst to first to worst?

The Boston Red Sox are on pace to do this 1n 2014. They may not even get to 69 wins, which was their "magic number" under Bobby Valentine in 2012.

Today, by trading their 1-2 starters, they just went "all in" on getting this done.

I like the Lester/Gomes-Cespedes/prospect deal. Cespedes has more homers than than all of the Sox outfielders combined this year. Moreover, there is a chance that Lester may come back to Boston next year as a free agent.

I don't know much about Joe Kelly and Allen Craig except that they both have two first names in their names. Lackey will help the Cardinals win the NL Central. He's been a bulldog since coming back from Tommy John. What will the Cards do with his $500,000 contract next year?

The only upside for me is that it will be easy to go down to Fenway the rest of the year on gameday and grab a cheap seat off the street.

He should pay the Red Sox back the 22 million for the season he sat out after Tommy John.

Side note: I like that every analysis of every right handed hitter the Red Sox ever acquire includes the idea that they will "love to hit in Fenway" or "will pepper the Monster."

I don't get the "we will sign Lester after the season" thinking, simply because it seems that we arrived at this point because the Sox didn't want to sign him to the type of contract (even at a slight discount) that the market would give him . . . right?

Really wish the Yankees could/would sell. Who wants one of Carlos Beltran's knees?

Backroom deal between Lester and the Sox already done for next year: Five years for 130 million including a five million signing bonus.

    So say "my sources."

I don't know, is Cespedes really a Beane player with an OBP just over .300? And it's doubtful he would have been back with the A's after his contract ends.

The move greatly improves the starting rotation this season, and they bring back to guys (Gomes, Fuld) who've been in this A's clubhouse.

Cespedes would have certainly bailed on Oakland for a bigger market when his contract was up in ’15, whether or not he’s a “Bean Guy” is questionable, I know Bean & Co. scouted the shit out of him in Cuba a few years back and beat out the likes of the Dodgers and Yankees for him so obviously there was some romance there… Clearly the honeymoon is over though. Also, wasn’t the purpose of the Sox trading Lester to get something out of it before he walked this off-season? From what I remember the Sox were refusing to give him 5+ years and staying put on 4 years with the last being a team option.

And the cherry on this hot fudge sundae is that the Yankees are picking up the balance of his absurd 10 million dollar contract

Sox are sending $ considerations, too. We can share him, like divorced parents with joint custody of a terrible child.

As ridiculous as this all is, the Yankees needed to sign him in the offseason anyway, so whatever.

This David Price trade is a joke. How does this trade help TB in any way?

They got three players: a young, established starter who isn't arbitration eligible until after 2015 (Smyly); a young infielder with a lot of upside who was blocked on his current team (Franklin); and the best prospect in Detroit's system (Adames). That's a better haul than they would be likely to receive in the off season, and helps put a lingering question mark over their franchise to rest.

But that's pretty pathetic considering all the other offers they had been turning down. Oh well at least it's the American Leagues problem.

So Detroit now has the last three Cy Young winners in it's starting rotation.

I don't remember the last time the trade deadline was this busy. So many big moves today.
