Default Return The Gift: The Post Punk Thread

Apparently, I'm on a mission to start a thread for every subgenre of music in existence. But this subgenre is the best. Really the best. There's room for a little new wave in here if it kind of straddles the border, but mostly you should be keeping it angular, keeping it weird, keeping it atmospheric, keeping it too smart for its own good. Here's a bunch of less recognized tracks (than your Joy Divisions and your PiLs and your Gang o' Fours) that are fantastic.

    Fatal Microbes - "Violence Grows".

    Homosexuals - "Astral Glamour".

    The Prats - "Disco Pope".

    Flying Lizards - "Sex Machine".

The Astronauts - "Books" (the beginning of this one is clipped off for some reason, I think most copies of this album on the internet are ripped from vinyl and the tracks aren't quite cut at the right spots).

I'd argue that Television were more of a post-punk band than a punk band, regardless of the era they were playing in and the fact that they were punk forefathers. Intertwining guitar attack!

Meh. Medicore Killing Joke, especially compared to something like Madness.

Yeah, maybe, but I really like that song. All of the 1980 s/t belongs in here.

Hell yes. One of my favorite genres, and one that as time goes on I find I know so little about.
    7/23 - Fuzz - Troubadour (?)
    7/30 - Shabazz Palaces - Roxy (?)
    7/31 - Hamilton Leithauser - Echo (?)
    8/01 - Ceremony/Nothing - Roxy (?)
    8/06 - Herbie Hancock - Hollywood Bowl (?)

I probably know more about it than any other genre, although I still have much to learn. Ask away.

I absolutely adore what I've heard from Gang of Four, Wire, and Television. I guess I'm just looking for more suggestions from people who know the genre.

Young Marble Giants were such a cool, weird little band. They were super spare and ominous and just odd. If you don't know them, all their work fits on to one killer collection (as is the case with many post-punk acts)

Also, Magazine was so cool. Howard Devoto, one of the co-founders of the Buzzcocks, went off and formed a great post-punk band after he left his original group. The first album, Real Life, is a beast of epic proportions, and Shot By Both Sides is a song that he wrote with Pete Shelley, his partner from the Buzzcocks

Bryan's board title should be "The Librarian" or something like that. Where do you store all this?

Only two bands from the whole reunion wave have really impressed me with the work that they've done since they've reinvigorated. While Dinosaur Jr. are excellent, they're not really a post-punk act at all, but Mission of Burma certainly are. They do really art-damaged punk songs with great melodies and great playing and lots of conviction. They also had a guy named Martin Swope who would perform with them live in the 80s. He would sit behind the sound board, record live loops from the band and then distort, loop and otherwise manipulate the sounds to create these really weird noises that seemingly came out of nowhere. They broke up when Roger Miller developed some pretty bad tinnitus, but they reformed in 2002 (conveniently being one of the first 80s indie groups to come back and bask in their influence) and have released two fantastic albums as well as one really good one since they've been back.

    Songs:

Edit: And, apparently October 4th is Mission of Burma day in Boston, as of 2009. That's fuckin' cool.

One of the coolest post punk things I've done seen/heard: Mission Of Burma playing a free show in Cleveland and covering Pere Ubu.

Don't know how The Birthday Party hasn't been mentioned yet, but yeah, Nick Cave has always been awesome.

Then of course there's David Yow's crazy ass

My personal favorite band of the genre covering other great Post Punk

And I know they don't get much love on here, especially their first album, but I fucking adore The Horrors

I guess I prefer the more vile sounding side of the genre, I mean I still love Wire, Gang of Four and all the others, but the above bands are what I usually put on when given a choice.

I am loving this thread. I genuinely love Mission of Burma and Television, so it's nice to get some exposure to other similar bands.

I absolutely loved MofB's new record
Yeah they played the echo last year. I lost my license and it was 18+. I went on this giant rant about how punk was dead and the bouncer eventually let me in. Really appreciative that he did that.

This is a great thread. Thanks for starting it Patrick.

would this be a good place for me to restart my Mekons proselytizing? I'm not real good with genre boundries.

    How bout Wall of Voodoo?

    Flipper?

also it probably doesn't fit Patrick's intention of the genre, and they later became a big joke sellout, but the Psychedelic Furs first two albums are really really good.

Patrick, do you know the Wolverton Brothers? Apparently they're a Cincinnati post-punk band from the 80s who were on Sub Pop for a bit in the 90s. They're playing a bar in Cincinnati tonight and I happen to be here, so I'm gonna check it out.
