    Default It's raining Hollywood Park

Hollywood Park's last day of live racing is today (Sun 12/22) before it gets torn down and used for real estate development early next year. So if any of you lovely SoCal folks have nothing better to do today, go to to the track, enjoy the weather and pick some winners... it's not like you guys have an NFL team to root for ;p

I'd always go there while waiting for flights home from LAX, and I loved simulcasting their Friday night race cards.

Many of the wins in Zenyatta's 20 race winning streak (this one was probably the most thrilling) came at Holywood Park

And it wasnt always about the horses-

Friday Nights were the best. $2 admission, $2 beers, $2 hot dogs, free concerts, and a little bit of everyone from LA having one great time. It very much had that old-school Lakers vibe.

Also, where else could you sit in the grandstands and between races, bet on airplanes approaching LAX with your friends. First one to get the name of the airline right as it got closer won a buck from everyone.

Ended up taking the family. Friendly folks saw us in line and gave us 4 box tickets. Ended up being one down from Bob Baffert's box. He was only there for the first, but pretty cool to hear him talk.

Did you end up witnessing and/or committing any crimes today, Wes? Were you an accessory to any of the crimes committed by Rafael Bejarano today? If so, your criminal activity was paid nicely.

By the way, the horse that won the 8th race- Koukla (was the #8 horse)- they have big plans for him next year. Derby plans.

My dad used to take my sister an I there as kids. One time we knocked over a bagged bottle of booze next to us by accident and the drunk who owned it came back and started to swear at us. I think that may have been the only time my Father has threatened a mans life in front of us. But it was a great moment indeed.

Yeah Santa Anita and Del Mar are taking over Hollywood's race dates this summer. So there will be the same amount of racing in Southern California going forward, but just one less track on the circuit. Track closings across the country aren't all that uncommon with all the competition from casinos, etc, but it just sucks seeing a place with the tradition of Hollywood close.

A couple pics from the final day. We weren't able to stay long enough to catch the 8th, but Bejarano did come through big for us yesterday. (and by big, made our day break-even for us)

Horse racing: in which rich upper-class assholes treat living animals cruelly for fun and sport, with gambling involved.

Dog fighting: in which impoverished lower-class assholes treat living animals cruelly for fun and sport, with gambling involved.

Surprise! the rich-person version is a "tradition" while the poor-person version is a felony.

    I'm on Tom's side, too.

But I do lament the loss of Hollywood Park, if only for purely selfish reasons: I work in Del Mar (in town, not the track), and now that they're adding a new fall meet which overlaps the Thanksgiving holiday, it means we'll have to deal with assholish race people more and longer than we already do. Yes, I am fully aware that track season constitutes the bulk of all revenues for the town and its businesses, but the idea of dealing with more of this shit depresses me to no end.

Only went there once, with a girl I was dating years ago to see Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Wish I would have gone to that JAMC show.

And sure horse racing isn't appropriate, but Tom's example isn't a good one. The horses, while definitely being treated cruelly, aren't fighting each other, and surely not to the death. Similar colored apples and oranges, perhaps, but apples and oranges nonetheless.

The base of support for horse racing is wider than you suggest. Like anything and everything, there is a pinnacle of rich upper-class in the sport, but horse racing has historically been one of the most accessible sports to the working class. With cheap (or free) admission, inexpensive food and drink, and maybe winning some money after placing a $2 bet is just as exciting and far more accessible for many 'regular' people than other sports that have priced out the masses. From Churchill Downs to Inglewood and from weeknight Quarter horse racing to the Triple Crown & Breeders cup, this is true.

Don't care for horse racing either. But that JAMC was a kick. Also saw DEVO there. It was kind of a strange place for shows. But those two both sounded really good and were a lot of fun. Plenty of boardies in attendance.

There are definitely some bad apples in the sport. Ones that drug up unsound horses and race them. What's sad is it's happening at some places where the purses are pretty good, and the owners are just trying to get a piece of the pie without regard for the animal. Any horse racing fan, or anyone involved in the sport in general hates this as much as any member of PETA. I love animals, I don't hunt, and it pains me watching a horse pull-up with an injury, take a spill during a race, etc. And unlike Nascar where a lot of people have fun watching the crashes, everybody is sick in the stomach if theres a spill in a race (mostly for people that do care for the animals, but also others who have money on the horses affected in the spill).

As for the Nascar analogy, it's terrible. Nascar is boring, and if you can wager on it, you're making a wager on one race that lasts what? 3-4 hours? I'm wagering on races that goes every 20 minutes, and when simulcasting go off in rapid succession in different parts of the country. Although I will say as a fan of the sport I do watch the big races just to watch them, without any wagering interest. What I mean is, I probably couldn't watch horses race around in circles for very long without a vested interest and without wagering, horse racing probably wouldn't exist). That's why I don't watch Nascar. But... even as popular as the NFL is, a lot of people watch it to cheer for their team. But what also makes people watch is betting on the games, and fantasy football. Things that give them a vested interest to watch.

I'd actually make a counter-argument that in most cases, people owning horses are more analogous to a MLB team with it's star pitcher. First off, you may wanna be more offended that in a lot of cases owners spend more on buying a horse that will be more expensive than all the cars you ever buy combined, and some that are more expensive than a mansion in the hills. Because of the prices they pay to buy these horses (even low-level claiming horses cost 5k), and the continuous expenses after, the horses probably get better medical care than most humans (not joking about this... when will you ever get a visit from the doctor for every minor issue, with constant physicals and checks to make sure your horse is sound/healthy? And these vet visits are additional added expense of of course). And for the really expensive/talented horses, they're treated like a major-league pitcher in the sense that they run rarely. Maybe once every 6 weeks... because there's a fear of wearing the horse down physically (most horses have something similar to an inning-count. Even horses with less skill run at most every 2-3 weeks). The horse I mentioned above that won yesterday was bought for over 300k at auction, and they waited after months of workouts to finally get him to the races. These horses get for the most part really good treatment.

Also in general, horses entered to race normally get vet checks prior to it to try and make sure they're in good health before racing. It's two-fold: for the health and well-being of the horse, and also for the wagering interests. How can we bet on horses we perceive to be in good health/racing condition if they're not? Then the game has the perception of being crooked if a horse shouldn't be out there because he seems unsound. For that reason as well, when a horse pulls up with an injury during a race, or gets scratched at the gate due to the track veterinarian not liking something he sees about the horse about to race, he has to work out before a vet and be deemed sound before having a chance to ever race again.

I mean... because there are plenty of people with your stance (and you have every right to think that way), horse racing is fighting a constant PR battle for reasons such as animal cruelty, drugs, but also from the people that like it and bet on it that have reasons to believe they're not getting a fair shake as well.

I'm ranting, and these these arguments probably won't do much to sway any of you. The reason for the thread was this is a board with a lot of SoCal posters, so I thought it was relevant to post for that reason.

Tom, boardie photo meetup in April, can we hug it out? If I make a stop at Santa Anita before heading out to the fest, I promise I won't bring it up lol.

what also sucks a little bit about this, is the Del Mar was special every year because it was only 6 weeks. Big fields, big purses, horses shipping in from everywhere to make races extremely bettable. I hope the product doesn't get stale with a longer meet happening now.
