See how wrong you are, Tommy? Randy is agreeing with you. Those are perfectly fine terms to use. The way I'm handling my list this year is when I feel like I'm comfortable enough with an album to make a decision about its overall quality, which I would say usually takes at least 3 listens for an album I don't completely dislike the first time through really, but it varies per album of course, then I give it a number grade and my list is just gonna be the albums I've graded highest when I run out of time left in this year to post it.

The great thing about these year end lists is getting to listen to stuff topping other boardie's lists! unknown listed some albums that I haven't even listened to this year, so I'm excited to dive in. And bmack's list reminds me that I haven't put aside any time to listen to metal, yet. Let me know if you have any questions about any of the albums I listed.

This is actually complete bullshit. Most non-music nerds I know absolutely have to digest an album, whether they are using that word to describe it or not. I know lots of people that go to one concert a year, and listen to maybe 10 new albums at the most in that time, and they always talk about how they buy and album and listen to nothing but that album for like a month straight, like hundreds of times. People think it's absolutely bizarre that I could even attempt to listen to 20 albums in a month, or spend a day listening to 4 different albums in a row.

i am going to try to put one together today. i am terrible at putting things in order and i've been neglecting listening to music for listening to podcasts over the last month, but I still have a lot of albums I loved.

Nice! It's is certainly a Top-3 album for me, and I'm glad to see it get some recognition by other boardies.

Also, the TM404 album unknown had on her list is really, really great - still a few others I want to check out too.

It's ridiculous to think we all absorb music the same way. I can't even count how many albums I thought were meiocre or boring on first listen but came back and to appreciate them later.

You're a bunch of pretentious fucks. Music is not The Iliad, goddammit. Either it sounds good or it doesn't.
There is nothing pretentious about giving an album another chance when you are in a different mood or environment. I maintain music can often be about a time and a place. Something that might not hit me on first listen at my desk at work might completely surprise me when I put it on again at an airport or on a walk. This is fairly common with me.

    We are all snowflakes Randy.

Ambivalence as compared to their rest of their catalog. It's overlong both in the number of the songs and the length that several tracks run for. A lot of it is clunky or unmemorable. I miss the widescreen rock thing. But the handful of songs that truly shine do so as brightly as anything they've made. My final verdict is that is merely a very good album; not a classic, but certainly not a flaming pile of dogshit. I think I've given an honest appraisal of how I feel about it, both as to what it is itself, and to how I feel it rates relative to other things that have been released in a (speaking for myself) somewhat unmemorable year.

I don't know Spooks, Miroir Noir's assessment feels spot on to me...Reflektor's an album of tremendous highs (Title Track, We Exist, Normal Person, Orpheus) and lots of meanderingly decent and palatable but hardly impressive material...but the highs justify the overall price of admission on their own, and because of those highs, it's still one of the more memorable releases in a relatively down year.

    Makes perfect sense.

i think this is accurate, but there are a lot of other albums I liked too, but putting anything in any kind of order past 50 is basically impossible for me beyond putting things I really didn't like more toward the bottom. My listening habits have been really weird this year too, like grabbing clusters of album and listneing to them a shit ton, then moving on to another group of albums. So there are albums here that i listened to 25 times but haven't touched in 7 months, and literally forgot about them, and going through iTunes I was, "holy shit that album was awesome I think!"

    Anyway

You are the only other person I've ever seen so much as even acknowledge this group. I have to imagine with the proper publicity they could be an insanely huge breakout act soon.

I really need to give this more time. I've liked it quite a bit but it's been near the top of so many good lists this year and I just didn't have that level of reaction with it.

    43. The Ocean – Palagial (Instrumental)
Did you ever get to the vocal version? If so, why the instrumental? I'm surprised by that.

Good to see this one make a list. I had to miss them in LA for a graduation back in May, and now I've come to find out they played in October. d'oh! But they're working on a new album, so yay!

Also, I resisted Joanna Gruesome until all these year-end lists came out. As soon as I found out they're on Slumberland, I got the album. It's quite a fun listen.
