Default It's raining 2 decades of New York Street Art

"The extensive aerosol art on 5Pointz — an internationally renowned haven for urban artists — was quietly painted white early Tuesday morning.

The Long Island City building is set to be demolished by the end of this year to make way for a pair of luxury apartments. The redevelopment plan — spearheaded by the owners of the site Jerry Wolkoff and his son David — was approved overwhelming by City Council in October.

“I didn’t want any confrontation,” the elder Wolkoff said of the overnight overhaul that occurred between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. “It’s torturous.”

The artist collective sought to block the building’s demolition, filing a request for an injunction based on the Visual Artists Rights Act, which protects works of art that have “recognized stature.”

Federal Judge Federic Block officially rejected their injunction last Tuesday, allowing for the demolition plans to move ahead."

    After

I don't understand why they had to paint it over if they were just going to tear it down.

Everyone that likes to tag it and paint on it can buy it back from the owner to make sure their canvas doesn't get torn down. But all of their money is probably tied up in owning all of the other properties they freely tag. Oh wait...

Saw the place while on the 7-train going into Manhattan. Looked pretty cool. Glad I saw it.

Cowards probably painted over it for fear of protests.

I'm all for street art/murals/pieces/throw-ups/decent tagging. But if the owner wants to take it down, sorry bub. That's why you take pictures of your shit because you know it's going to get painted over/defaced/etc.

If there were private funds or some other means for the site to be saved while allowing the developer to be made whole, then why not, but the developer is not going to walk away from a project out of the goodness of his/her own heart.

This is starting to feel like the end of Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. Save the community center! Where's Ozone, Turbo and Special K?

I painted on your building, it's now my art so you can't tear it down.

I don't understand the relationship between the "Before" and "After" pictures. They're not the same building. Or was the graffiti really that elaborate that it looked 3-D? Or have they already torn it down and put up a new (shabby) building?

The buffed out picture is the other side of the building, this article has some better pics.

I find it weird that the DONDI piece on the top wasn't buffed out, someone must have known how legendary that was

This place kept me and all my friends from going out and painting on the streets every night. Places like this have a purpose and really you can hardly call these pieces "Tagging"

I like what is pictured. I dislike tagging. Tag your notebook or something.

Really glad I saw that a few years back. Some of the BEST graffiti I have ever seen in person was all over that building. Most of the art on that building was really well done, not just weak tags.

Shit I would hate to be the painting contractor/painters on site doing that (I'm a painting contractor and we often get contracts with cities to do graffiti removal, most of the time it goes off with out a hitch).
And yeah, sucks that all of that good looking artwork is going away, and it IS weird that they're painting over it even though they are demolishing it.....but that building has owners, and those owners have every right to do what they will with that property.

Getting your piece painted over is an inherent risk of all street art. It sucks, but that's how it works and it is also what makes some of it so special.

I wonder why the owners did feel compelled to spend money on something they are going to tear down....

Unless they are giving fresh canvas to some good graffers to play with before 5pointz is done for good

Oh, it'll get hit plenty, but they'll probably keep painting over it.

Just get Banksy to do a stencil. People in Queens will start removing the building section by section and selling it for profit

Or they can do that with the "luxury apartments"

All right now, for all you boppers out there in the big city, all you street people with an ear for the action, I've been asked to relay a request from Michael Bloomberg. It's a special for the Banksy, and I do mean the The Bansky. Here's a hit with you in mind.
