Thread: Does early arrival mean a better car camping spot?

    Ello,

This will be my first year in at Coachella (2014). I have my car camping pass and was wondering, a little prematurely, if an earlier arrival on the Thursday before the event will usually mean ending up at a grassier lot closer to entrance gates. I'm talking about arriving to the event early Thursday, 7am ish. Have you guys ever arrived early as shit just to be directed to a lot in the middle of nowhere? I've ready a few threads and it seems almost random.

we were the first people in line for weekend 2 and we got there at about 530am. getting there early def secures a good spot and the rest of the day to get fucked up and make friends.

Everytime I have camped, I have shown up Thursday when the gates open. Usually sit in line a couple hours but then get within 5 or 6 rows of the main gate after moving to staging where you get your group organized. They usually fill as deep as possible first, which is closest to the entry point then outfill from there.

also, think of it this way. Beer is $7 to $9 dollars yeah? if you get there early enough and are camped right at the front, and you want a beer, you can always quickly walk to your campsite and chug a few and head back in. although there might be a line to get back in, if planned right could save a couple of bucks on beer on the inside.

Yeah, early arrival pays off. Save money on drinks and getting drunk all thursday for the pre party is a blast. Drinking in line is also fun during the wait.

Also I hope I am camped next to you! I'll def try and smuggle in a few growlers, which is genius didn't even think of that. It'll be nice to get some local craft beers to fill the gaps between the Pabst and Natty Ice.

We didn't get there till about 7pm this year and got through security at 8pm so when they were escorting us inside we got in the second to last row for the first lot. It was super close to the food stands and the market and the walk to the venue wasnt bad. We got super lucky. I heard they usually fill the first lot up half way then move on to the other lot. Dont quote me on that though.

our group was first in line weekend one. 17 cars!! Being on first street is a huge plus you can get in and to the stage of choice within 15 mins depending on security lines.

By "Early", you really have to be there early to get the benefit of being one of the first ones near the entrance to the festival in Lot 8. Sometime around 11am Thurs (W1) they started randomly directing cars to non-lot 8 lots, while also filling in Lot 8.

As a rule of thumb, earlier is always better for being closer to the venue, but you have to picture the clusterfuck that are the security lines at Coachella. At some point, their perfect plans always go to shit and things fall apart (see above: people getting directed to shitty, far away lots when lot 8 wasn't even full yet). So, the earlier the better, sure. But also be prepared for almost any scenario / lot if you aren't one of the first couple hundred cars let in.

    2011: 11th in line (Thursday 7am)
    2012: 4th in line (Thursday 4am)
    2013: 1st in line (Thursday 4am)

There are downsides to being there early. Security just started their shifts, they dig deep in your car, and there are no exceptions.

    AND-
    • Being too close will lead to more security closer to you and your camp.
    • That random drunk will wander through your camp space more frequently after the show
