Burnt Ones' Gift is a pretty solid little lo-fi psych album. Original sounding in what it seems to be trying to do, a good listen top to bottom. Not a band I'd go out of my way to see live, but I'd show up early if they were opening for someone I was already seeing for sure.

Honeyblood's self-titled record is more '90s-influenced girl pop a la Waxahatchee and Speed Ortiz from last year, but with much more of a sound all their own. Real good record.

    7/31 - Hamilton Leithauser - Echo (?)

The first volume of Madlib's new tape is tight as fuck, which comes as no surprise.

yesss. vol. 2 is also great, but the first is where it's at. some of his best purely instrumental work in a long time. he's on fire this year.

I know, it's been floating around for so long but I'm now finally getting to it! I think this might be my favorite of theirs yet.

I didn't think any of the tracks were as good as The Reflection of You, but top to bottom its great.

It's a modernized version of "outlaw country," which as a genre has become normalized into the general perception of traditional country. However, in 2014 this album is starkly different than what has dominated country airwaves for the last decade-- bro country, hick hop (seriously). Outlaw country got tons of radio play in the late 60s/early 70s because it spoke to the burgeoning rock and roll fan interested in the seedy presentation of life via music, and this album sort of mimics that in terms of its reception in the current indie scene.

Also, "It Ain't All Flowers" is the worst track on the album.

That's incorrect. "It Ain't All Flowers" is one of the best songs of the year, and a really wild country amalgam.

I like the song a lot, I just like everything else on the album more.

Well, and that song does have a bit of a sore thumb quality on the album. Everything else is good country and then that comes along and gets all weird.

Boom Pow Awesome Wow by The Traps is a super lo-fi fun record. It's *so* retro sounding that it becomes a distraction, but is definitely different sounding and a nice change of pace for the year.

And if you are one of those who wasn't super offended at the MBV aping of the Cheatahs record earlier this year, you might like Pilot by a band called Playlounge, which is probably the No Age album that most would have preferred instead of last year's somewhat disappointing An Object. It does have its own sound at times, but especially with the way the vocals are so low in the mix it's nearly impossible not to think of No Age when listening to the album.

Definitely agree here. Stuff like "The Promise" is good, even great, country, but "It Ain't All Flowers" is why Simpson is getting so much buzz.

Was using the one cover as your example a deliberate choice? I love what he did with that song, but it's one of the two other somewhat anachronistic tracks on the album (along with the opening number.)

It was just lazy wording on my part. You were discussing arrangements, and that one has the most straight forward country sound to my ear.
