Burnt Ones' Gift is a pretty solid little lo-fi psych album. Original sounding in what it seems to be trying to do, a good listen top to bottom. Not a band I'd go out of my way to see live, but I'd show up early if they were opening for someone I was already seeing for sure.

Honeyblood's self-titled record is more '90s-influenced girl pop a la Waxahatchee and Speed Ortiz from last year, but with much more of a sound all their own. Real good record.

The first volume of Madlib's new tape is tight as fuck, which comes as no surprise.

yesss. vol. 2 is also great, but the first is where it's at. some of his best purely instrumental work in a long time. he's on fire this year.

I didn't think any of the tracks were as good as The Reflection of You, but top to bottom its great.

However, in 2014 this album is starkly different than what has dominated country airwaves for the last decade-- bro country, hick hop (seriously). Outlaw country got tons of radio play in the late 60s/early 70s because it spoke to the burgeoning rock and roll fan interested in the seedy presentation of life via music, and this album sort of mimics that in terms of its reception in the current indie scene.

Also, "It Ain't All Flowers" is the worst track on the album.

That's incorrect. "It Ain't All Flowers" is one of the best songs of the year, and a really wild country amalgam.

Well, and that song does have a bit of a sore thumb quality on the album. Everything else is good country and then that comes along and gets all weird.

Boom Pow Awesome Wow by The Traps is a super lo-fi fun record. It's *so* retro sounding that it becomes a distraction, but is definitely different sounding and a nice change of pace for the year.

And if you are one of those who wasn't super offended at the MBV aping of the Cheatahs record earlier this year, you might like Pilot by a band called Playlounge, which is probably the No Age album that most would have preferred instead of last year's somewhat disappointing An Object. It does have its own sound at times, but especially with the way the vocals are so low in the mix it's nearly impossible not to think of No Age when listening to the album.

Definitely agree here. Stuff like "The Promise" is good, even great, country, but "It Ain't All Flowers" is why Simpson is getting so much buzz.

Was using the one cover as your example a deliberate choice? I love what he did with that song, but it's one of the two other somewhat anachronistic tracks on the album (along with the opening number.)

It was just lazy wording on my part. You were discussing arrangements, and that one has the most straight forward country sound to my ear.

I haven't finish the album but I already really like Field Mouse - Hold Still life. It's very 90s indie rock with little gazing on top.

There's been an odd amount of buzz surrounding White Fence's new record, and it's definitely good but after one listen I prefer last year's excellent Cyclops Reap by a good bit.

That new Jessie Ware song, "Tough Love", has been an obsession for a few weeks. I wasn't super into the first album, but I am looking forward to hearing this one.

Shabazz Palaces' new one is excellent. It's much more adventurous than their debut, which makes for more of a mixed bag as well. Lots of shorter snippet songs than the longer tracks from Black Up, but some really high points as well. It doesn't feel as strong on first listen, but there's a hell of a lot going on so I'm definitely going to let it sink in for a bit. "Forerunner Foray" is fantastic.

The new Shabazz gets better with each listen. I don't think it's as stellar as Black Up, but it's pushing hip-hops limits.

FKA twigs album LP1 is solid after first listen. Can't wait to give it more spins.

Ought - More Than Any Other Day is really fucking good and I havent even finished the album.I mistaken one of their songs intro on the radio yesterday for a Television song til the song progress a little more and I was interested in listening their album which is fanastic so far. The first album this year I'll put on my top ten without even finishing the album.

Love by Amen Dunes if a wonderful little album. There's not a really good way to describe it - Robin Pecknold playing Kurt Vile tunes is a bad description but at times is sorta accurate - but it's just a really good group of well-written and meaningful songs. Really liked it a lot.

The song structures are quite similar but the most immediate difference is the sound itself as it feels a lot less spacey, especially with the guitars - they're much less "crunchy" or "psyched out" (lots of distortion, reverb, flange, panning, etc.) in favor of cleaner, more "spindly" lines a la a lot of West-African guitar rock. I enjoyed my first listen a lot, but have a feeling it will be a grower.

I've grown more and more in love with this album with each listen, and it shows a real progression in the songwriting from his last LP Through Donkey Jaw. I'm glad to see it get a bit of attention around here!

Jenny Lewis' The Voyager has been fantastic two listens through. I've never been a fan of Rilo Kiley and I always thought her previous solo material was decent at best, but this is much more engaging. It's filled with lots of great melodies, a few guitar solos, and quality production on the part of Ryan Adams. I'll definitely be coming back to this one in the coming weeks.
