I listened to it once and liked it, but haven't felt compelled or in the mood to listen again

Yeah. It's good, doesn't quite click with me the way it has with some though. Same goes for the live show. Energetic, loud, but there's a disconnect between the singer and the band or something that I can't quite figure out.

I just listened to the new Rise Against album. I realized I was just listening to a reincarnation of the last 2 or 3 records. Oh well.

What's funny about them is I really liked their first two albums, well Revolutions Per Minute in particular. But it's not like they ever really changed their sound. I've gone back to those two and realized that it's the exact same thing. Just cheaper sounding.

There are bands who constantly tweak their sound and evolve, and then there are other bands who are really good at the one sound they've created for themselves. Both are perfectly fine ways of going about things, to me. I long ago thought that both The xx and Real Estate would put out follow-up albums that didn't at all expand their sound but were both really good records, and that turned out to be the case. I'm thinking the same for Metz's next album, so when it does all kind of sound the same like the last record I won't hold it against them. And Jungle's new record is really good, solid front to back, but - it all works within the same sound, and I'm telling you right now for as popular as this album will be, their sophomore record in a few years will get absolutely trashed because it sounds the same as this one. I can feel it already.

I wish my main criticism of the newest Real Estate was that it "sounded too much like Days." I hate to keep harping on this, but Atlas just felt emotionless and lifeless (for me personally anyway). Probably my biggest disappointment of 2014.

I like the new Cold Beats album which to me sound like new wave meets surf indie rock.

I really curious to see if Atlas Sound's new album will be released by the end of the year as Bradford has done one show with his new songs opening for Black Lips in Atlanta, I think is the right location where he opened for a gig.

I've not listened to it nearly the way I have the first two, but I didn't hear big emotions on the third album. It sounded like a small ball sort of album: the complacent emotions, no big changes, but nuances developed.

I have a problem with a band keeping their sound if they do nothing with it. There are plenty of excellent bands who have a signature sound and developed nuance within that sound (Pavement is probably my key example, but man: AC/DC, Shellac, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sam Cooke, Parliament/Funkadelic, the best bands ever.) But there are too many acts who find a sound and sit on it for the next six albums with minimal development. If they write great songs (hey there, Beach House - Teen Dream) then the album succeeds, but if they don't (No Age - Losing Feeling) then it all becomes samey. That said, a band like METZ doesn't seem to fall into that same category, because they don't seem like a "song" band to me so much as a "feel" band, one about the total visceral punishment. Kind of like the Jesus Lizard, who were clever enough to write memorable riffs and perform memorable shows while only writing a few complete, memorable songs. They survive on attitude as much as craft.

And I've been wondering about a new Atlas Sound album. Bradford hasn't released anything in months, and I'm starting to panic.

Yup. It was a co-headlining gig back in March. I don't have the most extensive knowledge of Cox's stuff, but the stuff I think was new sounded really good.

Full band. If you're curious about the setup, there are a few photos in the Variety Playhouse's Flickr account:

It was actually billed as a Deerhunter set, so the full-band Atlas Sound drought continues.

In other 2014 news, shoegaze fans will probably want to check out Seven Seas by Lab Partners and Hierarchy by Lightfoils. Both of them carry the torch for that sound pretty admirably.

I've only heard two songs from the upcoming Cymbals Eat Guitars album Lose but they have both been stellar. Like, I listened to "Jackson" just out of completeness because I did not like their debut at all. I am not sure if I heard anything from 2011's Lenses Alien but I am going to have to revisit. The second song that has showed up on Spotify, "Chambers" is also fantastic. Really looking forward to this album now.

Holy fuck! Adult Jazz's Gist is was a horrible listening experience....fuck that album deleting without listening to the whole album and trying to forget. Yet before I do that it might be some people and they may find it really good. Piano stuff , singing, experimental.

Lab Partners have a new album? Woohoo!

I seem to recall liking some Lightfoils so I will go there to. Thanks!

Yeah, I haven't had any desire to return to Atlas.

I'm anticipating the new albums from The New Pornographers, Avi Buffalo, and Bear in Heaven.
