The Rainer Veil EP New Brutalism that nosurprises mentioned earlier is incredibly lovely post-rave, early morning headspace music.

I'm a little disappointed in the new Tycho album. It's sort of just flatlining for me. Maybe it will grow on me.

I haven't listened yet, but the two (?) singles he released earlier didn't do much for me.

I like that he named it Awake, especially as it is a state of consciousness that I've never before finished listening to his work in.

A slightly more nerdy version of the dumb "More like 'Asleep'" joke that I made in my head as I was listening last night.

It just feels like more of the same. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it's really not interesting enough to listen to more than once.

Yeah, that Angel Olsen record is really good. I had heard a song or two on shuffle from the album that made me think perhaps the whole thing was really stripped down, so it was a nice surprise to find how many different kinds of songs there are on the record. Thumbs up.

Angel Olsen is also very, VERY good live. I highly recommend everyone go check her out as she continues touring. Her voice is much stronger and has a lot more range than I was giving her credit for on the album; she an incredibly talented singer. Her band is also really great. At the Echoplex the other night played about half and half with a band and solo.

This is how I feel about the new Real Estate. Anyway, not at all surprised that the new Tycho is a let down.

Really like Cloud Nothing's new one. Listened to it, put Attack on memory on, and immediately put it on again. Good good stuff.

Giving a first listen to Elbow's new one. It's typically gorgeous, and I really like how they're continuing to play around with their experimental side. A lot of the songs cross the 5-minute mark and avoid typical verse-chorus-verse structure. "New York Morning" is as good as anything they've done, and the title track is a (polite, sentimental) monster. It's not at all surprising that I'll be playing this one a lot.

Completely agree with your assesment of tommorow's hits, but also really disagree with the pharrell review. That album I found awful boring pop that does very little to distinguish itself.

I actually like the new Tycho album a lot. It definitely has that same Tycho feel that I loved from Dive, but this one is also not a retread, as I feel the bass and drums are much more present and noticeable throughout.

A History of Hygiene by The Stevens is a really solid hodgepodge of a record. It's pretty all over the place, and is quite good despite wearing its influences in plain sight. In a matter of seconds it'll go from a slacker-y Pavement vibe to a more straightforward Guided by Voices style and up and down and all over. roberto will dig this one if he hasn't heard it already.

Nice. Tiny Mix Tapes says the albums is "the point where GBV, Wire, and the Tall Dwarfs finally converge." Sold!

I am John Fenster. The 2014 list is called 2014 Collaborative Playlist. That should link to it, though it may open a web player. If that doesn't work it should be one of the first playlists in my profile; most of my playlists are secret.

And yeah, the 2013 albums list was very useful for me, too, an easy way to remember what new albums there were to listen to. I just made my 2014 albums playlist public.

I have been digging on the Forever by Painted Palms and Tomorrow's Hits by The Men. I am really looking forward to the new ones by Cloud Nothings, Elbow and, now, The Stevens!

I've listened to the new Cloud Nothings album several times now, and I've decided I really like it. It was not an instant favorite though, this album is a lot different than Attack on Memory, the production seems much more DIY, there are strange tempo changes that kind of bothered me at first, and the vocal cadence on certain songs didn't click for me right away. Now that I'm a few listens deeper I've grown to appreciate all of these details. This album is much more punk than their previous work, much more in your face, and overall it is a good sound for them. I still think Attack on Memory is better, but Here and Nowhere Else is almost as good.

Yeah the Cloud Nothings album feels like they took what they started with Attack on Memory and floored it down the road. Much more consistently energetic than AOM, hard to say which is better at this point. The Cheatahs record and this are tops for me so far by a lot.

I mentioned it a page or two ago (and it's currently ensconced toward the top of my year's-best list in that other thread), but fans of Cloud Nothings would do well to check out the debut by Eagulls. It's a little more rough around the edges, but stylistically it's pretty similar and I'm surprised by how much it's growing on me with repeated listens.

I love it after two listens. The vocals turn me off a few times but overall I like them and feel they will grow on me with more listens. The music and emo throwback aspect is one of the best ones Ive heard in this late 90searly 2000s emo revival moment.
