Slough Feg is probably never going to be a band that convinces too many people of their greatness, but if you like traditional metal like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and melodic, guitar-based rock bands like Thin Lizzy, then you'll probably dig the new one, Digital Resistance. It sounds like the whole album is sung with a fist raised to the sky in defiance against an unjust god as the guitars power the steeds pulling the singer's chariot towards battle. All melody, energy and spectacle, it's a winner.

That sounds like something I should skip.

This new Alcest is pretty and all, but feels pretty inconsequential. The album by Have A Nice Life, on the other hand, is a much more compelling shoegazey pop album, with lots of really great, deep textures that grabbed me from time to time. I'm going to have to dig deeper, but it was great late night music.

Illum Sphere's album is pretty good. Definitely James Blake/Flying Lotus influenced, but it's a solid listen.

Jerome LOL's EP is pretty tight too.

I can't recall how many people here were fans of Quilt's 2011 self-titled release, but their follow-up, Held In Splendor, is pretty great, and I could see it being very appealing to a lot of people here. It has a very retro sound, certainly venturing into psych at times. Really nice.

Rapper/producer Pyramid Vritra's Stones Throw debut, Indra, is easily the best thing I've heard this year. I guess it'd best be described as sort of experimental, abstract hip-hop with tastes of IDM, trip-hop and just a little bit of psychedelic soul. The production is absolutely flooring. If you like weird, electronic shit and/or rap that's different, check this out.

Here's the single, although this sounds a little different than most of the album.

Also, he's playing Low End Theory tonight.

Man, this Cheatahs album is such a love song to '90s guitar rock. So jangly, so good.

    WTF???

A five track EP composed by Squarepusher and performed by the three robots that comprise the Z-Machines will be released on 7th April (8th in North America). Watch a video of the robots performing 'Sad Robot Goes Funny'.

I finally got around to listening to this one after seeing it mentioned favorably in a few different places, and I wasn't disappointed; one of my favorites of the year so far. My only complaint is that they should have released this in March or April as it strikes me as the perfect Spring record.

In playing some 2014 catch-up I also listened to Mas Ysa's EP Worth, which is fine but didn't really stick with me at all. Those who are fans of Delorean will find a lot to like in it I think.

Perera Elsewhere's Everlast is a nice, moody R&B album; the production is pretty interesting, and her languid delivery is a good match for the album's dusky atmosphere.

Finally, my favorite electronic release of the year so far is Thug Entrancer's Death After Life - a nice interpretation of myriad electronic genres through a footwork lens.

lot's of good stuff in here I have to check out. Pyramid Vritra and Thug Entrancer look very cool.

I've been playing out Dean Blunt's new mixtape, "Skin Fade". Very trippy and good. Tree's new EP is great as well, excellent hip hop.

This Millie and Andrea song also kicks ass. Andy Stott lending himself to a deep trap beat. Excited to hear the album from these guys.

Hey, so remember that Thee Oh Sees "indefinite hiatus"? In Dwyer time that really just means a couple of months because here's a new track in advance of new album!

They're still on hiatus. Apparently the album was already recorded before the hiatus (and in a banana ripening warehouse or some shit). I'd be surprised if this wasn't the last we hear of them for a bit.

NPR has the new Phantogram album Voices streaming right now, I'm about half way through and I think it is pretty good. I didn't have high expectations because I got pretty burnt out on them after their last album, but it is a very pleasant listen.

    Listen here.

The Body/Haxan Cloak album is an absolutely pummeling listening experience. I only listened to both acts' 2013 records once through so it was a bit tough to tell what exactly Bobby's influence was but what I do know is although it's early in the year this is the one to beat so far.

Thanks! Love The Haxan Cloak but had no clue about this. I'm looking forward to checking it out. (you should really listen to Excavation more than once, btw)

Like usual, there's a lot to unpack with the new St. Vincent record. Her albums always take a while for me to get familiar with. I did enjoy this one on first listen a bit more than the last one though. Really liked it.

I was the same way Drinkey. I actively avoided her releases since the people I knew who loved her also went apeshit over other artists I didn't care for (Fiery Furnances, Joanna Newsom, Beck). I caught her set in 2012 before Flying Lotus and was made a fan.

I wouldn't be surprised if Annie was on a significant amount of acid while writing these new tunes.

Just coming in here to support the love for the new St. Vincent. It grabbed my attention faster than Strange Mercy, and that was a good record itself. The first half of the album is hit after hit. It took a while for the single to sink in, but in context of the whole album it makes sense.

So Thee Oh See's John Dwyer is about to release a solo album as Damaged Bug called Hubba Bubba; he was recently on Henry Rollins' KCRW show, and in Hour 2 they play the album in full which you can listen to here. Hour 1 is pretty cool too, as all the songs are picked by Dwyer and they give you a sense of where his musical predilections come from.
