New Drive By truckers album, English Oceans, is pretty good. if you're a fan of their other work, you'll like this one. I am much more of a fan of one of the vocalists than the other though.

Angel Olsen's Burn Your Fire For No Witness is really, really good. Kinda bluesy, lo fi-ish recording, really dark and dirty and sound, and lots of varying instrumentation from track to track. i think of lot of people here will dig her, and this album.

Mogwai's Rave Tapes will definitely require more listens. First impression is that it's very understated and like others, i'm not a huge fan of the synth work.

Against Me!'s Transgender Dysphoria Blues is really excellent, and probably the band's best work in years.

Alcest's Shelter is absolutely gorgeous. They've pretty much ditched most references to black metal in their sound, but for fans of shoegazer and/or post rock, this is a sprawling, epic record.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band's Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything is also very good!

I liked the Alcest record quite a bit, but like other reviewers have said, it's so indebted to the shoegaze sound that it tends to mimic rather than push forward. That's not to say it's not beautiful or really entertaining, but I do wish Neige'd continue pushing himself the way he used to.

Yeah. So far I've been playing that Angel Olsen a lot more than anything so far. I've been listening to Warpaint too and it's got good atmosphere and can be really beautiful but, the songs aren't sticking with me much. Could need more listens. Fuck Off Get Free is damn good.

Really excited to listen to the new Alcest, Thee Silver Mt. Zion...., and Angel Olsen. Though based on the singles I heard I prefer the older more-folky stuff she used to do. However, I know I'll love it anyways since I love her. She's playing March 2nd at the Echoplex. I really want to go!!

The debut album by Solar Halos is some rocking good sludge rock. The guitars grind, the vocalist wails, there is a good groove, and it's just catchy and good. Check it out.

I'm really gonna try man. March is particularly busy for me but I'd say there's a good chance. Cool! I've never heard of him but will definitely check him out.

Yeah the twangy and fuzzy rock oriented songs dominate most of the album. The majority of tracks have a full band and it fits her well. It's a smart next step for her. There's still a couple of solid stripped down folk songs, especially White Fire. That's a beautifully haunting track. Definetly gonna check out that show.

I liked what I heard on Pitchfork this week. Kinda excited for this release in April! Mark of Explosions in the Sky and Eluvium's Matthew Cooper have teamed up for a new band/project called Inventions

Delay Trees Readymade is a pretty palatable dream pop album overall. "Perfect Heart" stands out as a bit more jangly (and really seems to rip off a recognizable Real Estate melody) than the rest.

So Tara Jane O'Neil is releasing an album on Kranky soon and this is one of the songs on the record. It's this great combination of ambient and folk, and O'Neil's gentle, wistful lyrics compliment the subdued drones and light guitar strokes so well. It really blew me away: http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/news...finding-144155

Not a surprise at all, but the songwriting on the new Drive-By Truckers is incredibly solid; it breaks about half between Hood and Cooley songs, a balance that they've never managed before, and that really serves them well here. The band also sounds tight and lean, but they're still able to play things out a few of the tracks. I guess I could also throw out some cliche about it being an adult rock and roll album in a world that has far too few of them, but man, it's just so enjoyable to hear a line like "She can't stand to have him around, but she always misses him when he's gone" in that inimitable Patterson Hood drawl. Really enjoyed it, and probably my favorite of the early batch of 2014 releases.

I posted this in the Damaged thread, but thought I should share with everyone else.

Big Ups are a Brooklyn based hardcore punk band, and their full length debut, Eighteen Hours of Static, is fucking great and is worth your time.

Apparently it technically came out one of the last weeks in December, but OOIOO put out a new album recently. Just as I was wondering if they'd imploded into their drums.

    Heck yeah.

Also, of the 2014 albums I've heard so far the new one from The Notwist is definitely the best. I've only heard bits and pieces of Neon Golden, that's one of those albums that I've been meaning to give a full listen but never have. I put on the Alcest album yesterday and turned it off before the end of the second track.

The new Notwist record is a trip. Much more varied than anything they've done, and it gets some pretty heavy beats at times. I really enjoyed it.

And after two listens, the new OOIOO is just spectacular. It takes that Boredoms-like psychedelic approach to gamelan, and some of the bass lines are just astounding.

I listened to two new Sunn O))) albums today, both Terrestrials (their album-length collaboration with Folk Black Metal turned Classic group Ulver) and LA REH 012 (apparently live.)

Terrestrials is a killer collaboration between the two artists. Sunn's drones lay the base for the performance as Ulver create minimal string/drum pieces to go along. The first two songs are excellent, but I couldn't get through the third because my file was corrupted. Still, based on the first two tracks, they had a very successful collaboration and created a good drone record.

LA REH 012 starts with a slow, low guitar burn that is the prototypical Sunn sound. It grows eventually into a droning riff that dominates most of the time. It's classic Sunn, something they haven't really focused on recently, and it's great to hear them do their signature style so perfectly. Invisible/Sleeper starts with an unsettling collage of voices in agony before the guitar vomits forth. Again, classic Sunn sound done perfectly. I'm regretting not ordering this one now, as it's kind of a beast, even if it does nothing new.

Bryan - LA Reh stands for Los Angeles Rehearsal. They did a similar limited run LP in 2012 of some rehearsal stuff (which I bought at Hopscotch that year).

Newly renamed together PANGEA came out with their second full length release today, Badillac. If you are into Burger bands or just really like catchy garage rock this record is for you. It's not quite as good as Living Dummy, but it isn't far off, and there are some stand alone tracks that I think might be better than anything on their first album.
