We don't offer a program like that here, but we're really flexible when it comes to attendance. I don't want other employees to think that it's ok to bring their child(ren) to the office. This isn't a daycare. Besides, the kid was 13. He should be old enough to be home alone.

There is something really weird about parents and teenagers right now. I work with several freelancers that will not leave high school aged teenagers at home by themselves. I do not understand it. When I was 10 I was baby-sitting my younger siblings. Dragging your 14 and 15 year olds around or shifting appointments because they need a sitter is fucking bizarre.

I'm waiting for our legal guy to draft an email that explains the "spirit" of a couple of our contract clauses so the consultant agrees, will sign and start work at a client site in the morning. It's 20 minutes to EOD ET and I'm running out of time.

Did you finish your traffic school?

I'm the only person on my team sitting in a separate building (on a scrum team, so sitting with all my developers) but my boss wants our monthly team meetings to be in person. I walk my fat ass over 10 min early to be sure I'm on time (in the hot sun...ugh) only to find out the meeting has been cancelled 2 min before it's supposed to start. Well, at least I'm only working 1/2 day since I have a dentist appt today. Yay me.

Not yet. It's incredibly boring. I kept falling asleep while trying to read through it. I'm only halfway done.
I'm tempted to have one of the new interns finish it for me.

My boss wanted to play me a new CD, he thought I would like it. "you don't hate Christian music, do you?"... How am I suppose to respond? Yes, I am the devil!

Is there a such thing as being religiously harassed?

It is ridiculous. I thought it couldn't get any worse compared to a few years ago, but it is. Kids are no dumber than we all were 20 years ago. The parents seem to be afraid of EVERYTHING!

Just accepted the terms of my new job and decided on a start date of Aug 11th.

I currently have vacation with my current job July 3- July 20 and July 30 - Aug 3.

Any benefit to giving notice before my long July trip? Or should I wait until July 21st to give notice?

is this with a different company i assume? if so, the 21st makes more sense. you could also call from vacation to give only two weeks, that's what my boss did when she quit. it may be kinda awkward, but so is going on vacation after giving notice. good luck in whatever the new venture is!

If the company feels bitter towards your resignation, they can accept it effective immediately.
Personally, I would wait until July 21 to put in a notice.
Resigning during your vacation is just poor taste unless there were extenuating circumstances.

Thanks. Current company won't feel bitter, but will be disappointed. I think there may be some risk though due the sensitivity of the current project, so yea the 21st sounds good. That's still almost 3 weeks notice. And being unemployeed during vacation doesn't sound fun.

what is their history with people who put in notice while on sensitive projects? we had a VP that would walk you out that day if you were on a sensitive project and going to a competitor. it sounds like they like and need you, so they probably wouldn't do that, but it's probably something to prepare for.

The risk is real, so I'll wait and besides I'm enjoying this project and learning a lot.

On a separate note, the job description originally had "Director of Strategy & Development", but the offer came back with "Managing Director of Strategy & Development"

I share my office with 3 guys, it usually smells like sweaty guy in here. In order to cover up the smell of sweaty guy, one guy decided to wear a new cologne that smells a lot like bug spray. I would rather smell sweaty guy.

There are a lot of people out there that treat recruiters like shit, thinking that we're just gatekeepers for the real decision maker, and that we need them more than they need us. When someone treats me poorly during a screening or interview, I usually call them on it quickly - asking something like:

"Is there some kind of an issue here? You seem to be on the defensive.." or, "Are you comfortable with this conversation? You don't seem very willing to participate in this process." Usually they stumble, saying.. "What do you mean" or " No everything is fine"..
Generally this snaps them out of their bullshit very quickly and puts you back in control of the interview.

Yeah, I was just trying to arrange an interview so I called the guy and it seemed like the call dropped. I called back and said that the call must've dropped giving him the benefit of the doubt and before i could finish he hung up again. So I called his home phone and his wife answered, asked me a bunch of defensive questions and when I mentioned that I had a job opportunity for her husband but we need to bring him in for an interview first, i heard the click. So fuck them. They're deactivated from our system and I made a note so no one else has to deal with these awful people.

WTF? Why would anyone be rude to a recruiter? Is that normal behavior in your line of work? I'm guessing you're... not recruiting senior executives.

On the contrary ... I have found it's the senior individuals that can act like arrogant assholes. It's certainly not normal behaviour but on occasion it does happen. The people Nathan was dealing with are obviously dicks to the extreme but he'd have to clarify what level of person he's recruiting for.

ThatGirl - I'm not at all surprised that some of the senior execs you have to deal with are arrogant, but, yeah, the behavior Nathan was describing wasn't just arrogant, but bizarre.

I do all kinds of general recruiting. This guy in particular was a welder. Welders are a pretty hot commodity right now and I could've sent him to work next week assuming he passed his background check and drug screen.
