I've never been but would really love to. Feels like an $800 pass is unnecessary and I'd rather just see smaller shows on a one-off basis - any thoughts on if that's doable and the best way to enjoy SXSW, in general?

2014 will be my first, but most of my friends in Austin say they do it every year for free.

Ask sonofhal what to do. He knows how to do this festival right.

Okay, spent a fair amount of time sifting through older SXSW threads. Sounds amazing. Small clarification: the badges are needed for big bands, but otherwise, you basically just need to get into the venue and in some cases there will be a cover, but you can stay in that venue for as many bands as you want?

Last year I created youtube channels of sxsw artists that I wanted to check out. If several of us do it and post the links here it would save all of us a lot of time. It was also useful to give to my friends so they would know what bands we were going to check out before I dragged them from venue to venue.

Parade of Lights is a pretty fun show. I saw them multiple times a few years back in a lot of small local places as I know the main guy in the band. I have no idea how they are like now but they put on a pretty good show. It's not the most memorable show you will see but there is a lot worse.

Also a couple buddies of mine from Australia have been raving about Vance Joy to me for the past 4 months or so now. I assume this is going to be his first tour in the USA but all the YouTube clips I have seen of him live have been good. I was actually going to start a thread for him to play Coachella but then I just never did.

Speaking of which, one of the dum dum girls has a band called SISU that is playing. And their dark, shoegazey synth sound is ace. Their album and live show are better, actually.

Probably no chance of getting a cheap place to stay at this point, is there?

I'm with you on the better album, but the live show is clearly Dum Dum Girls>>>> SISU.

They took over my band's old rehearsal studio in Anaheim. Saw them loading up for Warped Tour one day. Seems like a bastardized version of stuff I used to listen to...not sure if I've just gotten older/moved on or if these new bands are actually that much worse. Either way I can't get into it.

The Tumbleweed Wanderers are pretty rad. Met these kids outside of OSL in 2012 playing on the sidewalk, and they're really talented and incredibly humble. They've gotten pretty big over the last year, touring and playing festivals like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and whatnot. They're definitely worth checking out
