Thread: Duran Duran vs. Depeche Mode

Default Duran Duran vs. Depeche Mode

Both icons of the 80's, both super awesome. Which do you prefer?

I usually find that people like one or the other, but not both. I like Duran Duran more cause they're whimsical and poppy which makes em kinda fun to listen to. I just never really got into Depeche Mode.

Why? Not being judgemental at all, jus asking. Cause most people i know think Depeche is more sophisticated and what not...but personally i think they're a bore.

i saw duran duran last year at bang fest. they were kinda funny to watch they still are pretty good actually but too much cheasy sleazy stage antics/banter.

i'd opt for dm though, they STILL make good music, and their later style is less poppy than duran duran.. martin gore's a genius.

martin gore, cevin key from skinny puppy, and jack dangers from meat beat manifesto should all team up together and produce something.

If John Taylor and Dave Gahan got in a cage match who would win? Or swap out Gahan for Gore.

If Duran Duran continued with the "Planet Earth," "Friends of Mine," and "Tel Aviv" mode, then my vote might be for them; but, as is, DM maintained talent and integrity quite a bit longer.

DM is one of the most influential dark acts-if not the most influental dark act of all time.

i liked both at one time.
    along time ago.
ive seen them both live and i would have to pick DM hands down
but both are kinda cheezy live. i cant handel daves spinning or simons rantings about how this or that song changed his life then acted the song out on stage, complete with a dove flying out of his hands,
that was so funny i almost wet myself.
but DM had better songs. the john taylor is much nicer to look at though.

This is not a serious thread....Duran Duran are not really serious musicians as they, unlike DM, have been unable to extend or better their musical portfolio simply because it never had any substance in the first place...there I've said it!

    I'll say it another way.

back in the 80s no one who was into music took Duran Duran seriously. they were shallow pop swill, much the same way you all think of Fall Out Boy today.

Depeche Mode is pretty boring, IMO, but at least people who are into music can have a serious discussion about them.

    In summary, DM > DD

I voted for Duran Duran - based on nostalgia.

I have sooo many great memories of cruisin' the summer streets blarin' some DD tune on my walkman. DM was a bit too depressing for me in jr. high. I hadn't been tainted yet by society's mindless expectations.

But, I clearly recognize that DM will more likely stand the test of time.

And yes they both kinda suck live.

I Depeche Mode. Duran Duran were OK back in the 80's but pretty shallow, kinda like the Killers.

Unless you've seen DM in a non-festival setting, your opinion is flawed. If you have seen them live and you still think they suck....well, in that case you're just wrong.

I agree with that. I've seen many DM shows, and excepting the Coachella appearance (which was OK), they were awesome.

I only saw DM at Coachella and was very disappointed. Not only with music selection, but there just wasn't a whole lot of energy on stage. Saw DD in '94 and although their music selection was all about the old tunes, they also just weren't the most riveting live act. I absolutely love both bands, yet they are not high on my list of great live acts. Although, they definitely are a few slots above PIL and New Order.

I think PiL live would be horrendous, but still want to see them reunite and play sometime.
