Speculate? No. Methodical inquiry will lead to a "thought," that I'll share here. I've got a white board, some dry erase pens, and the internet at my fingertips. It should only take a few hours to review the concert history of every band that's ever played Coachella. Only then will I be able to think my thought.

They also go into the Coachella rules.

Yeah, they go into Coachella in the article, but THE COACHELLA PARAGRAPH WASN'T POSTED. THE LOLLA ONE WAS.

Do they not test for reading comprehension in whatever monkeyland you live in?

Chicago promoters were mad 150 acts were "frozen" out of the area for 75% of the year. The DA agreed it was worth a closer look and lots of contractual details were made public.

Right, so the DA hired a Distric Attourney (they specialize in radius clauses) to investigate.

Every contract is negotiable, and sometimes acts are booked late in the game and they already have a local gig 1-2 months before the festival. Promoters should go easy on the bottom line acts so are aren't barred from LA or Chicago for 9 months.

Leonard Cohen is the obvious one where he played LA the same weekend as Coachella 2009. Might have been a different promoter as well.

Where's the proof, though? It's like you want me to use common sense or something. I need definitive proof. Source link?

Jay-Z Coachella 2010 was a late booking and he had a March Staples arena gig.

Several acts have played Xmas radio arena shows in LA after the quoted Dec 1st deadline.

Metric and someone else had May gigs in Chicago before Lolla announced a couple years back. Metric also did some Big money corporate gig in Chicago about 2 weeks after the festival.

Coachella have paid big money to the the "first" to announce something. Postal Service was announced prior to the delayed lineup drop to beat Primavera being first to announce. Coachella also got the first US show by the WEEKND which involved some NYC shows to get mysteriously postponed. I bet Portishead, Blur, Stone Roses, Radiohead 2004, Grinderman and maybe Suede were contracted as US exclusive shows in those years. They've had 5-6+ headliner give their shows tour openers.

I really highly doubt Coachella had the clout in 2004 to contractually require Radiohead to do their only show of 2004 there. I imagine it more went, "Oi, boys, these Coachellar people want us to play their bloody fest. We need quid?" "Bloody right!" "Cheerio!"

And then they all stared at the floor and listened to Penderecki with a DnB drum beat beneath the composition.

Radiohead did their US tour in 2003 then had some Australian dates in early 2004. Coachella was tacked onto the end of that - final date of the tour and only chance chance to see them in North America that calendar year.
