Any of y'all who have even passing interests in metal should really check out some of the new releases from this year, like the Kvelertak and Deafheaven albums. The past few years have been great for new metal and I'm not really seeing that reflected in almost anyone's lists.

I think so far i've only really listened to the Hell, Boris, Oak, and Ash Borer albums as far as really heavy stuff goes. Only the Boris one have I really been able to digest though, especially since both the Hell and Ash Borer albums are 2 track records with 15 minute+ long songs (though i like them a lot).

You should listen to that Inter Arma album. I should listen to it again. Was pretty damned impressed on first listen.

Yeah, the Inter Arma album is fantastic. The new Deafheaven album is incredibly good. The Cough/Windhand split is really engaging, and the Kvelertak album is a blast. KEN Mode put out a great one.

And that's without the ones I'm waiting to listen to from Ash Borer, Vhol, Black Sabbath, The Body, Agrimonia, Altar of Plagues, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, etc., etc., etc.

You're the second person I trust who has expressed this kind of sentiment:

I'm going to try to get into this stuff more. I really enjoyed my first listen of the Deafheaven album today.

Yeah, that reminds me that the Anciients album is good, not great, and I've been meaning to listen to The Ocean's album too.

But the sentiment he expresses is true. For the most part, the best, most forward-thinking rock music in the past 2-3 years has been metal or metal-related. As indie gets more watered down and mainstream popular and noise bails to techno sounds, metal is taking over the forefront of interesting, well-crafted guitar-based music. If you want a real trip, check out Agalloch - The Marrow of the Spirit. It came out a few years ago, but it's fantastic.

    Mindless Self Indulgence? Really?

Sell me on it, please. They still sit as the worst single band I've ever seen, and I caught them back in 2002.

I've spent the last 10 years of my life defending this band. They are just fucking awesome (seen them live more times than I can count) and don't take anything too seriously. You need to have an extremely high tolerance for sarcasm and proud to be a smartass. Jimmy Urine is the greatest frontman (funny, witty, sexy, debauched). He is like Freddie Mercury on crack cocaine. And, you are going to lambaste me for saying this, but their lyrics are actually pretty intelligent and their music innovative. Go ahead, pile on ...

But before you do, listen to their quirky, catchy remake of "The Logical Song." It has made me happy to be alive once again.

I used to be a giant MSI fan, but they kind of lost me with if.

Bryan, I saw them a bunch of times around that time, and I thought they were amazing.

Ok, I guess it's fair to say my taste in music has changed in 11 years. Kvnty, the rest of your list suggests I would like that album. However, if you think there's a better entry point for MSI, please suggest it and I'll give it a thorough listen. When I saw them I had turned 16 two days before and was not exactly enthused by tuneless junkies provoking the audience at one of my first concerts. Suffice to say, that sounds much more enticing now that I've seen quite a bit of that, and maybe their music would land on kinder shores.

Jose, FIDLAR doesn't need explanation. It's as in your face and fun as punk rock gets, and if you don't like it, there's nothing that can be said to change your mind. They're an immediate band, for better or worse.

MSI's first 2 albums Tight and Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy were so aggressively weird, stylistically incoherent, and objectively offensive in every way, while still retaining a weird self-awareness and self-deprecating sense of humor, that they were incredibly appealing to me in my late teens and early 20s. They too soon struck a deal with Hot Topic through which they started to release exclusive EPs and merchandise and really toned down their sound and started marketing themselves much more directly to mall goths. You should try those first two albums out though, because they're pretty awesome in a totally manic way.

Also, I really need to listen to that Fidlar album. I wasn't terribly impressed when I saw them open at the El Rey in 2011 (i didn't realize they didn't even have an album out at that point), but I LOVE "Cheap Beer."

But dude, they make the most innovative use of the pentatonic scale since your high school bf's garage band. What's not to like?

That FIDLAR album is easily one of the years best. The album rocks so hard its stupid, the songs are ridiculously catchy, and it is fun as fuck. FIDLAR makes me want to make bad decisions in the best way possible.

And aren't the two brothers (drummer and lead guitarist) sons of someone from TSOL?

I moshed my lilly-white ass off during the recent show with Wavves at The Echo. "You take Sally, and I'll take Sue. There ain't no difference between the two ..."
