As I've said before, really nice job Paul.

As for me, I'm looking to cut up. Currently, I am 6'3", and weigh around 205 lbs. I know that I am not fat, but I do have a minor belly. My main goal for this next coachella is to look and feel good. I dont want a gut anymore. I want bigger muscles. I'm hoping that with the help of this thread, and the future motivation within, I can find the inspiration to consistently go to the gym.

Good luck to everyone! Post strength and physique gains/results, etc... so that we can all stay motivated! It's never too late to start!

I've gotten my Diet Coke consumption down to 1 a day. OK, I might have 2 on the weekends, but otherwise I'm doing good. I'm not sure if it's affecting my weight, I don't weigh myself often.

For some reason, I feel like soda should be cut out of the diet entirely. I realize that diet soda does not have much sugar, carbs, or calories, but I'd still cut it out. Something about soda makes it seem inherently unhealthy.

I effectively cut out all soda by drinking carbonated water, such as perrier. If you want to stop drinking soda, you should try it.

Good luck! I'll see you at the gym!

I read somewhere that diet pop can actually make you gain weight because the body doesn't know how to process/break down aspartame in the same way it processes natural sugar, and even though it's zero calorie cola it can still build up fat in your body. How much diet pop were you drinking before?

Years ago I was drinking around 4 a day. Past few years it's been 2 or 3.

I was drinking way too much...I cut it to about 1-2 a day and I have actually started losing. Not sure if it is the soda or just the stress lately!

I would like you to explain the biochemical and/or mechanical process by which the body (in its "ignorance") converts something with zero calories to something with a lot of calories (fat). Show your work.

I can't find the article but it turns out how the body breaks down aspartame can cause decreased serotonin levels in the body. This stimulates appetite and causes people to overeat, impacting weight gain. So although it's true the body doesn't break down Aspartame in the same way as sugar, it's not the actual aspartame causing the weight gain, just the side effects of the aspartame consumption. What I originally read didn't explain it in this way, however.

    Where did Tom go?

Any hydrocarbon has a calorie count. The notion that aspartamine doesn't have calories is idiotic. The artificial sweeteners are taste bud active at such low concentrations, the intake of calories due to these sweeteners is negligible.

I wanted to explain to him how the regimented intake of aspartamine leads to the buildup of the amino acid phenylalinine. Phenylalanine is changed to tryptophan using a relatively slow acting enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. This enzyme is homoanalgous to enzymes that convert tyrosine into dopamine and seratonin, meaning that if the phenyalanine concentration is high, the enzymes will be overtaxed trying to get rid of it, rather than being involved with the the final steps of seratonin and dopamine synthesis. Also, Phenylalanine uses the same active transport channel as tryptophan to cross the blood–brain barrier, and in high enough concentrations will interfere with the production of neurotransmitters because it basically causes a "traffic jam" in the active transport system. In summary, the biological process of the body are clogged with the relatively worthless amino acid phenylalanine, and are unable to efficiently produce the most important chemicals in our body, dopamine and seratonin. Dopamine and seratonin are the chemicals that regulate appetite, cravings and the feeling of satisfaction from a meal. Its really not hard to see why poor neurotransmitter levels can lead to problems like obesity where the victim insists that it is a psychological disease rather than a lack of willpower.

Drinking a diet soda once in a while has no negative effect on your biological system. Drinking diet soda as a regiment (3 times a day for a year or more) will cause a phenylalanine buildup that can lead to any number of health implications. There are very few official studies on this type of biology because it is impossible to have a controlled study that consists of a regimented intake of a drug over the course of many years. Anyhow, there you go.
"How long will this last, this delicious feeling of being alive, of having penetrated the veil which hides beauty and the wonders of celestial vistas? It doesn't matter, as there can be nothing but gratitude for even a glimpse of what exists for those who can become open to it."

It can trigger your brain to crave sweets. They did studies that showed that people who drink diet soda tend to eat more.

Please explain the mechanics of this 'trigger' mechanism. Please show or cite a study that demonstrates causality and not mere correlation between diet sodas and consumption.

You people really need to become more skeptical. Otherwise intelligent people can suddenly turn off half their rationality circuits when it comes to medicine.

There are a lot of articles about it.
    Here is what one said:
"Artificial sweeteners are hundreds to thousands of times sweeter than regular sugar, activating our genetically-programmed preference for sweet taste more than any other substance.
They trick your metabolism into thinking sugar is on its way. This causes your body to pump out insulin, the fat storage hormone, which lays down more belly fat.
It also confuses and slows your metabolism down, so you burn fewer calories every day.
It makes you hungrier and crave even more sugar and starchy carbs like bread and pasta.
In animal studies, the rats that consumed artificial sweeteners ate more, their metabolism slowed, and they put on 14 percent more body fat in just two weeks -- even eating fewer calories.
In population studies, there was a 200 percent increased risk of obesity in diet soda drinkers."

The problem is that people drink diet soda so they think it means they can eat other shitty food since they aren't getting their calories/fat/etc. from the drink.

Another problem is that the fake sugars in diet sodas trigger your body to actually crave real sugars, so it increases your appetite.

Anyway, I've gotten relationship fat over the past few months. Or, as Sunni nicely put it, "not fat...just not as....athletic as before." So I'm back on the train, cutting carbs and working on my body again. The best part about losing weight in the summer for me is that my mom's garden is in full swing, so I have tons of healthy options easily accessible.

That's a myth though. It has no basis in scientific fact.
