Talking Travel from LAX to Palm Springs

    Hi,

I'm from England and will be going to Coachella next year with three friends We'll be travelling to LAX and need a bit of help from some locals as to how to get to Palm Springs.

Are there buses? Trains? How much do these cost? Obviously a taxi is going to cost too much. We're staying in the Marriot Desert Springs, so any tips on how to get there would be much appreciated!

    Thanks guys

    Hi Buddha99,

We'll be driving to Vegas after the festival so will be hiring a car then. Didn't want to drive down ourselves as that means hiring the car for another 4 days just for a 2 and a half hour journey as we wont be using it during the fesitval. Seemed a bit of a waste of money.

    Thanks for the reply though.

I'd recommend renting a car as you're not camping.

I've been to Coachella (from Korea) 3 times and always had a car.
Even though I ride shuttles between the festival and hotel,
I needed a car for breakfast, mart-shopping, etc in the early morning or late night.
Plus, last April I found it very helpful to drive and park at the venue for one day (first day for me)
so that I can free my hands from all the T-shirts and vinyls I bought.

And check out Joshua Tree National Park monday morning before heading for Vegas.

We come in from Canada every year. If you can fly from LA to Palm Springs, I would still recommend renting a car. You might think you won't need a car for those days, but shit happens... Like needing to pick your tix up at will call... Or making runs to In N Out... Or locating pharmaceuticals...

Ooh one more quick question...are you able to hire a car in LA and then drop it off in Vegas? You can do that here in England but not sure if the same goes for America. We're flying home from Vegas and not LA.

You definitely can... Just will cost you a little extra..

Is this your first time in USA?

Oh I'm going the second weekend most likely I'm going to drive down from Vancouver, kinda make a roadtrip out of it. We can keep in touch and if I end up going weekend one, I can get you guys from LAX and we can all pitch in for gas and drive down to Palm Springs?

You can catch an airport shuttle to Union Station and then ride the Pacific Surfliner (Amtrak) to Fullerton and then catch an Amtrak bus to Palm Springs. Its a pain in the ass, but its pretty cheap.

You can rent a car at LAX and drop it off in Vegas BUT it might be cost prohibitive. They charge a premium for that. Plus if you rent a car at LAX and return it there, you will get charged less for the weekend days. Flights from LAX to Vegas are relatively cheap, bought 14 days in advance. Most everyone flies Southwest and that time of year you can get a flight for $60 per person.

Ignore all this car jibber jabber (unless you decide you want one) - we have been the past two years and got the Greyhound from LA to Palm Springs each time. $40 return, pick your dates. It's over 2hrs but there's no changes. Kick back with your ipod and enjoy the views.

    TIPS:
Stay near the LA station the night before and get an early bus out. Its the beginning of the line so you can pick your seat.
Don't leave Palm Springs on the Monday! everyone's getting out and cos Palm Springs is not the beginning of the line sometimes the bus is already full and you can't get on. Not cool if you have a connecting flight to catch and you have to split a $320 taxi ride back! We stayed an extra day in Palm Springs this year and went Tuesday, had a seat with no problems and got to experience lovely PS for another day.

Only two of my lot going this year so we may go for a car, for funsies

You can Priceline bid a car for next to nothing out of LAX. In 2012, my day rate was $9. In 2013, I paid all of $11/day. At that rate, fuck the bus/train/cab bullshit.

Thanks Steph for asking this! I've been going through all options available, but good to hear other people's views and ideas. It's a big help for a first timer
