I remember being in High School on the track team. We had a meet at Rosamond High School, which is in the Mojave Desert and super hot. I was part of the shot/discus squad for the track team, so I wasn't exactly a sprinter. However, at the last event of the day our team needed one more participant for the 4x100 relay. I had never run in a relay before, but I was one of the few participants who was 1) not injured and 2) had available events I could still participate in. I was given the final leg of the relay. Our team pulled a huge early lead, and by the time my relay partner passed me the baton we were about 50 yards in front of the next team. I ran my ass off and didn't lose the lead, although I felt like I'd run full on into a wall. My coach bought me a good meal that night.

    I'm going.

One of my favorite memories is when I saw the Kinks at the Springfield Civic Center in 1980 or '81 and they were doing their new song, "Destroyer" and during the part in the beginning of the song where Ray Davies sings:

"Met a girl called Lola and I took her back to my place
Feelin guilty, feelin scared, hidden cameras everywhere"

And then right before the next line when he sings:

    "Stop!"

The house lights went out, the arena went completely black and people were going crazy for about 20-30 seconds.

And then a single spotlight opens up on Ray's smiling face.

"Stop! Hold on! Stay in Control......"

    Pretty awesome moment.

Starting around 15 I began hanging around with my dad at local bars to be his shuffleboard partner so that he need never lose a game, which would interfere with him constantly reminding the other regulars that he could not be beat. A beer was bet between each of the two players of each team--since I was not yet 21, I instead accepted the cash value of a beer, 3 dollars, a sum which when obtained a dozen times in a row every night can pretty well support a 15 year old's needs. There were a number of "characters," as you will find in most local bars patronized by blue collar men. Being the son of the biggest asshole in the place--and a close third myself even at that young age--I was fair game for all manner of character assassination and general ball-busting by the grown men. When you factor into the matter the fact that my young ass was largely responsible for them NEVER managing to stay on the shuffleboard table for more than one game, I was downright hated from time to time. I gave them shit right back, but they being grown men there was a certain line I had to walk so as to not step over that separation between "cute rapscallion" and "little shit who deserves to get hit in the head." I couldn't just flat out call these men drunks or queers, but I could insinuate it if I was graceful enough.

Among them was a fellow we called Injun Mike, for he was very much a Native American by blood, but more importantly he was a drinking machine with no stopping mechanism, which made the moniker even more fitting. Mike had a wife who was something of a lush herself, but nothing compared to the balls-out drunk mess that Mike turned into on a nightly basis. One day, Mike was missing from the group and my father had the answer to where he'd been--dad had received a call from the local jail the previous night. Mike had been locked up for generally being a drunk menace to his house in general, and in particular there was some uncertainty as to whether or not he had been accurately charged with smacking his wife.

The next day, I got what must have been like my 14th suspension of that year. I have no clue what it was for, but I think it was pretty egregious. Mike was back at the bar that night, fucked up as ever when we arrived at 4:30 pm. Dad told Mike about what I'd done and Mike began slurring out a dramatic reaction that involved getting me in something of a headlock while I was still seated on a bar stool. He playfully--but still a drunk asshole putting me in a headlock, so playful my ass--unleashed a diatribe about how if HE had done the kind of things I did in school, his old man would have smacked him around. And how he can't do it, but if my father would just smack me around a little I'd probably cut the shit out.

Mike concluded this delightful sentiment by releasing me from my headlock and yukking it up as if to say that he didn't really mean it. I glanced at my dad to see if he wanted to respond, he raised an eyebrow and tilted his head to me--an invitation to take it if I wanted it.

"You know, Mike... they'll lock you up for that shit nowadays."

I think that was the first time I ever really made my dad laugh hard intentionally.

Really and truly. But the song was "Destroyer" and not "Lola."

Riiiiiiiight. I got it out today. Love it. Lola is still my very favorite song by the kinks for many sentimental reasons, but I love Destroyer- and still pretty impressed you were there. Sounds like it was a great show.
