    Default Savages - Silence Yourself

This is the thread where we talk about Savages and how they are emerging to be one of the best new bands of 2013.

Like most people who saw them at Coachella, I was only familiar with their one single they had released from the forthcoming album. I didn't research the band very much and I didn't know what they were all about. I went because a friend basically dragged me to the set and I didn't have any major conflicts. What I witnessed was breathtaking. It was an incredibly powerful and emotionally draining set. They turned out to be one of my favourite acts of the entire festival and immediately after their set finished, their debut album Silence Yourself became one of my most anticipated albums of the year.

Luckily I didn't have to wait too long, because Savages put the album up to stream on their own website this morning.

The album really is phenomenal. Just like their live show, its powerful, tense, and fierce. Pure energy and emotion truly drips out of every pore. I was afraid all of this wouldn't translate to the record, but somehow they did it. It is an absolutely remarkable listen and one of the best albums of the year.

I could keep going on, but before I reach a "sexyback phase"/ "existential fever dream" type comment here, I am going to stop.

    Instead, lets discuss Savages.

Love the live EP. Unfortunately missed them at Coachella, but will definitely be catching them at Primavera next month! Good to hear their debut album doesn't disappoint.

Probably! It'll be Bjork's last NA show for a while so I should go. Just waiting for FYF to announce their line-up first though

This was also one of my favorite sets of the weekend and I agree that they're going to be a Big Deal by the year's end. I ordered the album on vinyl through Matador last week and it should be in today or tomorrow so I'm going to hold off on the stream for now, but I'm really excited to hear it and I hope they come back to the US again this year.

I actually missed the Savages for the Evens since they're not playing any east coast shows It was great just sitting down listening to Ian and his wife play some good old tunes

I saw the first 15 minutes of The Evens and it was definitely nice to see Ian MacKaye perform. Then I went over and checked Savages and they rocked me to my core.

I'm gonna wait until the record comes in but I am very excited for this. Their set was fantastic (with the exception of the absolutely retarded 2 Chainz fans waiting through their set). http://i.imgur.com/Ok19Mo9.jpg

Savages are cool. They have the look, the presence, and they've marketed themselves EXTREMELY well. They are the total package...except for the tunes.

That's not to say I don't like them, because I do. But the breathless praise is insane. They are great at taking a single idea and pounding it into submission, but the tunes get by almost entirely on energy and not quality. That's probably just their thing, but I wish the tunes matched up with the quality of everything else.

Twice. At Coachella and at a club. Both were really good...Coachella was probably slightly better.

I'm not saying the hype is completely undeserved -- they are very good in a lot of ways. I just wish the songs were better. That's all.

It'll be interesting to see where they go from here.

There have been extremely few times that my mind has been totally changed by seeing a band live. Even a really amazing performance doesn't make the songs better.

It's hard warming up to her voice for some reason. And does anyone think they sound a lot like Screaming Females?

I'm with Andrew - enjoy them live, but don't think they have a lot of solid tunes. Still prefer her other band (John and Jehn). That said, the bass player is bloody amazing.

To each their own. I love the songs though. But that may be because of how fantastic I thought they were at Coachella. The only song I had listened to before their set was "She Will." I thought they song was very cool, but nothing extraordinary. However, at Coachella that song was absolutely monstrous. Towards the end it got so tense that I could barely breathe. Its hard to explain, but something really struck me about that performance and when I listened to the album for the first time, I got that same sense of urgency and tension. That sort of feeling I got from the live show is difficult to translate to recordings but, for my anyways, they did it.

Also, before Pitchfork reviews this album on Monday or Tuesday, my guess is 8.8 +/- 0.2.
