    Default Coachella ate my car.

had an awesome time this year. but had to sell my car in the desert and get a rental back to Austin.
got stranded in El Paso in the way (broke down right at the intersection with a bank, a pep boys and a hotel thankfully. 20 minutes before or after and i would have been in the desert fucked.) $1200 for a new radiator, coolant pump, thermostat, timing belt. Got the ok to ride.

made it all the goddamn way to Indio, broke down coming down the mountain on I-10. Blown head gasket that went undetected the first time.
took 2 hours to get to camp, having to shut the engine down every 30 seconds or so as the heater wasnt bleeding heat off). set up camp as the sun rose

    had an amazing time.

limped to midas. sold the fucker for $800. it was my last month to pay on it too.

my girlfriend was awesome throughout the whole ordeal and kept cool when i couldnt even fathom doing so.

anyone donate anything serious to the desert?

    just my soul...

but fuck man what an adventure you had getting to the desert...this is why i never take my own car for this exact fear...glad you made it, hope you had a great time...

EDIT...actually i arrived early tuesday for wnkd1 and my rental car, a 2013 ford fusion only 3000 miles on it left me stranded in calexico on wednesday 4/10 ...we were making a run to mehico for some good times before the festival...car rental was from Dollar and apparently they didnt have a facility near by so we had to wait 5hrs for a new rental car to be towed to us from San Diego...

I googled the damn car to check for answers while waiting it out and the fucking thing had a recall for faulty transmissions...EXACTLY the issue i was having with it(wouldnt shift out of 1st gear)...

scared the hell out of us being stranded at the border with coachella at arms reach...

    Fuck Cars! new or old

I feel your pain. My Cherokee's timing chain broke near Banning wknd 1. Got towed, rented a car and managed to get to Coachella before noon. Getting it home to LA was another brutal mission.

I've feared this as well. My very first Coachella my car sprung a leak in a cooling hose. Thankfully it happened before we ever left las Vegas. And that trip I was able to make it to Coachella and back in my own car, also the next year (08, and 09). But ever since I rent a fun car up until this year I rented an Escape Campervan and I'm never going to go back to cars.

Escape Campervan ftw! I have to rent a pickup truck to take all my camping gear (enough for me and friends flying in from other states) which runs me about $500 and the Campervan is $600 for the same period... kind of a no-brainer. Camping in style from now on with minimal effort.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world.

I always have and always will rent a car making the trek down there. Well worth it since I will be putting over 1000 miles r/t on the trek to the desert. Don't trust my own car and ends up being pretty cheap if split multiple ways.

At Coachella (2003?) Sunday night my car got fucking broken into. All CDs got stolen, as well as backpack and friend's stuff. Luckily, $700 that another friend had in the car wasn't taken/found.

I was then driving back to LA with broken windows, when around Morongo Casino transmission goes out. Lost 1-4th gear, only 5th worked. In hindsight I should have drove as far as I could, instead flat-bed truck to LA and $120 later I got home. Shit night.

Wait wait wait....your car dies on you after you're nearly done paying for it and then you go and buy a KIA??????

Don't buy a Kia. That's a really bad investment, if its price allures you, you should have taken a gander at your options that were within $5000. Otherwise buy an old Japanese car, those actually last.

Buy a Honda and you won't have those issues.

I've had 3 Honda's ....1st one I sold with 250,000 miles on it and the motor ran like a champ even the day I sold it. Never broke down.

Owned one Ford Probe GT - Broke down over and over again. Was on the side of the road more times then I care to remember....swore I'd never buy a Ford again.

My current 2002 Civic has 245,--- miles on it and it starts like it did day 1. Only had to replace brakes and front suspension Not once broken down on the road.

Wife's CRV has 144,--- miles on it and has never broken down. AC replaced - which Honda paid for and brakes.

I'll never buy any car that's not a Honda. They work and work and work and work.
Just when I think you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this…and totally redeem yourself!

You should have crossed into Juarez and get all that fixed for $200. Who ever bought your car probably did that.

Once on I-10 in Maricopa County, about 40 miles out from the city the front axle on my suv got completely shredded. I was very tempted to sell the car on the spot but ended up just paying almost $2k to have it fixed.

    guilty.

made the mistake of cracking my windows ever so slightly last year. return trip home: sand had managed to seep into every crevice of the car rendering the windows unable to roll up or down. oh and i ran out of frion on the way into the desert, so no AC. if you can, get a rental, since you'll be putting that vehicle through some ritual abuse. i'm taking my own car for spatial purposes (7' x 12') so that i can fit a shower shelter in our campsite.

if i could bring a mini and shove all my belongings in Hermoine's purse though... that'd be cool

Back in 08, I totaled my poor car on the drive up. The sad part was, I made the whole long-ass drive safely and then some old people blew a light as I was making the turn into my hotel and t-boned me.

At least my insurance company was good about it and got me all set up again pretty quickly. The accident happened on Friday morning and I was still at the Coachella gates by 3. But since then I've taken a rental car every year. Indio around Coachella time is a hellish mix of blind old people and drunk/high/exhausted Coachella-goers.

if you take your own car it's not a bad idea to check your air filter when you get back as well, especially if we have another sand storm.

the trick is to make your own dust penises before others have a chance to. once people see a few penises on a car they'll usually just move on to the next one.
