It pretty much bullshit that all these unfuckablefaces recorded all these live performances of bands on their cell phones and I cannot find a single video or audio of Deerhunter covering either the Cramps "Green Fuzz" or Black Flag's "Thirsty and Miserable" online.

Can you PLEASE tell us about the set? I know there were a few board people there and all I've heard was that it was shortened due to weather. I'm dying for more info.

No wonder they were delayed. That stage looks terrifying to play on with the water and the wires.

I pretty much agree with Ian Cohen's approving, but measured take.

For me, this sentence in the last paragraph is the most striking in a "broader picture" type of sense:

"But Monomania is certainly a strong effort on its own merits, and more importantly, they’ve avoided making their deflating 'diminishing returns' record-- their King of Limbs, Centipede Hz, Transference, Sky Blue Sky, etc.-- that casts doubts about whether they’ve gone too far down the same path."

It mostly just bums me out having to come to terms with the possibility/probability that some of my favorite bands are getting older. And therefore, so am I.

....what? It took this sentence for you to realize the Deerhunter, like you and the rest of us, have undergone the passage of time?

Ha...no, I fully realize that. Just another one of those constant reminders that makes you think about the passage of time a bit more. I dunno...I'm kinda stoned right now.

Their set was incredible. Stinkbutt and I were watching them soundcheck and I freaked out for a bit because I couldn't see Lockett. I thought he was sick or some such. I then saw him rise up from one of the amps and relief washed over me in an awesome wave. He's really incredible and it's hard for me to imagine Deerhunter without him.

Anyway, the new bass player didn't miss a beat and they sounded extremely tight. I was kind of sad that they didn't play "Never Stops," but the new material absolutely slayed so it didn't really matter overall. Bradford's banter was also extremely funny/entertaining albeit weird (of course). Deerhunter probably had the biggest crowd of the weekend. It's hard to tell though because it's a small populace on such a big ranch. The visuals/production complimented their set quite well, too.

Also, I had a nightmare about Deerhunter canceling before I left Arizona. When it started raining I was about to accept that my nightmare was going to become a reality. Thank Christ the rain stopped after 30 minutes or so.

EDIT* Deerhunter also had a specific Psych Fest print made up for their set. I'll post a pic when my buddy sends it in the mail.

So after many listens, i must say this is my least favorite Deerhunter album. I don't think the raw, garage-rock sounds suit them, especially Bradford's voice. His voice is so like angelic (idk how else to describe it) it makes the instruments sound flat on this. They should stick to the more lush sounds. I do really love Nitebike though.

So, I've decided I like the new bass player more than the old one. I feel like he stands out more. Sorry, purists.

The fact that Josh had a playing style far more unique and contributed much much more to the band's songs has nothing to do with being a purist.

How was his style more unique? And how do you know how much the new bass player contributes? Did Josh leave after they completed the record? I'm asking because I really don't know the specifics. All I know is is that Josh leaving was tantamount to 9/11 to some. I think the new album is fantastic and I don't think the new guy has missed a beat.

EDIT* Also, I don't think the new guy is necessarily "better." I'm just enjoying the basslines much more on Monomania than on any of their other albums. If the new guy contributed "fuck all" to the new record I'll retract my statement.

Josh (new bass player's name as well) recorded Monomania with the band. He definitely seems to fit in well, but, to me, the style of songs on the new album don't lend themselves to showcasing the talents and originality of the bass player as well as some of their past material did (think Octet, Nothing Ever Happened, the intro to Hazel St. for example). It all comes down to opinion, of course, and the new Josh seems to be fine but I'd say that at this stage it's hard to tell how it'll all turn out.

there are only three or four great songs on the album, so I can't say it's anywhere close to a classic in it's entirety. And I have B.O.

I know it's on another album, but they kind of nick the guitar line on 'Desire Lines' from Eno's 'Needles in the Camels Eye'. Still like that song alot though. Looking forward to seeing these guyz live come August.

Ok I'm finally seeing them tomorrow with avey tares slasher flicks opening . Small club so it's going to be a super intimate setting. Time for them to convert me to a fan lol.

Awesome night however unfortunately I didn't convert. Slasher flicks stole the show , trippiest show I've heard. Deerhunter sounded amazing , but just like on record idk what it is honestly but I just can't connect with this band. It gets boring to me . They execute flawlessly I just don't feel into it. Oh well....

I am watching a youtube video of Opal Foxx Quartet and since they are from Atlanta I was thinking that I could see "Connie Lungpin" being inspired from "Miss Opal Foxx". Here is the video I was watching.

I definitely could see that as a possibility. I'd wager shit tons of money on the probability that Bradford is very familiar with the work of Benjamin Smoke.
